We strive to discover ourselvesg to be exposed to different philosophies and to react to them. We feel a need to be both a functional part and a fashioning force in society ----- a craving for knowledge of what and how to harness available means towards constnlctive and progressive ends. The World is our campus, and we need certain essentials to function satisfactorily in it. We need Power g the powers of: Suggestion and Demonstration, Bal- ance and Coordination, Concentrated Study and Knowledge, Organized, United Effort, Mechanical Propulsive Power, and Creative Power. Seniors And this our most memorable year - our last, the culmination of four years of intellectual pursuit is at an end. We have survived the turmoil of the yearsg behind us lie the joys, the lingering sorrows and bitter sweetness of our lives within the walls of this our beloved St. Aug . It has been difficult but we have learned. Socializing influences and the demands of critical and analytical thinking have had very stimulative and positive effects on our minds, triggering a surge of energy and power of mind that we itch to unleash in the awaiting worldg for we know that we will set an example for posterity. I 1 Eli.. i 5:50 WWFM Saint Augustine's students assemble to make their march on the North Carolina capitol in protest The year 1969 saw many happenings. not the least of which was a nationwide moratorium to protest the war in Vietnam. On a brisk October 15, several hundred students marched from the campus to downtown Raleigh to demonstrate their support for the moratorium. Short speeches were made and a joint St. Aug.-Shaw position statement was read. This action is indicative of the increased involvement on the part of the students at St. Aug. Students from Saint Augustine's. Shaw. and Raleigh high schools join together downtown for the protest march. Gamma Xi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.. was founded on March 26. 1949 here at Saint Augustine's College. As in previous years, the members of the chapter have carried on traditional projects. We presented a cheer basket to a needy family in observance of the Thankgiving holidays and toys to the children of the Governor Moorehead School during the Christmas holidays. In October of this year, the chapter sponsored its Second Annual Greek Orientated Freshmen Reception. The project of which Gamma Xi is extremely proud is the erection of a plot on the angle at Saint Augus- -tine's in commemoration of Gamma Xi's birth. Gamma Xi chapter has planned many other projects for the remainder of the year which include the donation of a series of children's educational books to the Governor Moorehead School, the sponsoring of a Park Day for the children of Tuttle Community Center, and hopefully the sponsoring of a Pink and Green Ball featuring internationally famous Soror Carla Thomas. At one time the Saint Augustine's College Newspaper was known as the Falcon . When the Yearbook acquired the name of the Falcon , the newspaper took on the name of the Pen . ln 1967, under the editorship of Danny L. Scaraborugh, the name was changed to the Pen of Saint Augustine's College . Until this date, it has retained this name. In December of 1967, we became involved and we participated vigorously in a conference at the Sir Walter Hotel, At this conference, Saint Augustine's College and numerous other colleges got together and published a paper. As editor. l have involved the staff in the activities of the Raleigh Cooperative Lo..-g. which is composed of newspaper editors from Shaw University, Meredith College, Saint Mary's College, Peace College and North Carolina State University. Through this organization, the newspaper editors can exchange ideas and look hopefully toward producing a magazine. The Pen of Saint Augustine's College is also a member of tl St d N newspapers. For the first time the Pen of Saint Augustine's College has made a community commitment. We now deliver newspapers to the immediate surrounding area of the school. Burt. Editors-in-Chief visit With The 1970 FALCON Staff t as .....,-1 h 'gf ,B . N1 QM .f x is PnA in convert .J X X I it 4 The spring of 1969 announced the birth of the 1970 Falcon as the Co-Editors started planning and organizing the 200 page book. The Falcon was the kind of massive project its creators looked back on and wondered how it was ever published. Thousands of labor hours, headaches, heartaches, trauma-inducing situations, and fun combined with the growing experience of working with a wide variety of personalities and the real dedication that only staff members can appreciate, served to bring about the success of this effort. The yearbook office became home for us and here we experienced that which no one except those who have worked on the Falcon could understand. Only those who have immersed themselves in an all-night effort to complete a deadline could understand the pleasure of contributing something. An editor's appreciation to those who stayed with their jobs through thick and thin is a hard thing to put into so many words, but it is felt just the same. No yearbook is ever completely new. This yearbook too, has similarities to the previous Falcon, but there have been changes. Probably the major changes have been the extensive use of color, and freshness and creativity of the format and copy, We have sought to give a new look to the book and have strived to encourage greater involvement of the student body. This year for the first time we participate in the Southern Regional School Press Institute and College Communications Workshop. In this Institute our 1969 Falcon will be judged by competent judges whose expertise compares favorably with the best in the nation. We hope to vie well for the award of most outstanding publication in the College Division. Finally we would like to thank the Administration for their willingness to listen to our problems and complaints. Peter M. Adams. James E. Burt Co-Editors 182 Nw ,Eg-+3 i i if?
