We the members of the Senior Class of 1960, with deep gratitude, dedicate this annual to Mrs. Maude Smith and the memory of Mr. Walter Kenan our classmate. This is more than a dedication of a college annual. This is more than a trivial honor. This is more than a college courtesy. This is the dedication of our cherished memories to a very dear friend. This is a dedication of our hopes and dreams to an honest emulation of her who has been an inspiration to all of us. Your friendly smile and kindly heart is an encouragement to all. Your genuine interest and enthusiasm is an inspiration and your willing co-operation an incentive to greater accomplishments. In times of discouragement and fear, you gave us hope, in times of need and want. you gave us succorg in times of bereavement, you gave us comfort and soothed us with the warmth and gentleness of a parent. May the Lord keep you under his everlasting power always. II. MR. WALTER KENAN In grateful admission, you helped to build a bigger and better America by giving your invaluable assistance and guidance to the many young men and women with whom you came in contact. Those who were acquainted with you were fortunate, but those who knew you were truly blessed. Though you are deceased the memory of you is eternal within our hearts. THE SENIOR CLASS MRS. Greetings to all who may read herein the story of a class unique in the history of Saint Augustine's College. It is a class that has planned wisely, worked diligently, and wrought well. To them congratulations are in order. The arduous task of producing a yearbook comes to one but once in a lifetime. We, realizing this privilege, have maybe unconsciously let duty subdue our initial precepts. Yet, while stumbling through our debut, our zeal has been unquenchable. To reveal between the covers of this tabloid the happiness we've known, the treasured friendships We've shared, the information we've attained, is an impossibility. However, if you receive enjoyment from our Annual, We shall be elated, for you too will share with us the memories of our treasured college days. Our aim in editing the 1960 FALCON has been to sustain memories of various happenings during the years. We hope that this Annual will become one of your treasured possessions and remain with you always. To be or not to be: that is the question. -Shakespeare. It is my wish that you will now be better able to evaluate change in terms of continuing human progress rather than as a threat to human stabilityg you will be better prepared to become a dynamic and integral part of society. With minds filled with knowledge new, Our goal of life is now in view. Through St. Augustine's rooms and grounds Exeriences, joy and sorrow we have found. Which made us strong, sound and true, Giving us courage, our work to do. Now envision the sea of life, Before us rolling with many a strife. But we'll sail it forever, Each with a determined mind, And at some port, success we'll find. Some of them were quite at home while others were a little in doubt, because of the distance that they were from home. We had quite a time at first, but at last we were adjusted to our Alma Mater. We boarded the ship, and decided as long as we actually were going to be aboard the ship we may as well be organized as a crew, so we chose Walter Kenan as our president, who has since deceased. We had a very successful year and the class was immediately motivated to be the most outstanding class in the history of St. Augustine's. We decided we couldn't be outstanding unless We did something for this title, so we placed many attributes into various organizations, clubs and into the sports world. Representing us on the football team were: Samuel Sanders, James Piggee, Herbert gal Burrows, James Bud Bridges, Linwood Sharpe, Donald Pie Thompson, Joshua Edwards, Curtis House, Rocker Means, Namon Flournoy, James Taylor, Kenneth K.T. Davie, Reginald Reg Alexander and the trainers as always Monty G. Frizzell, and Otis McNair. After football season was over, of course we had to play basketball in order for the team to be successful, here we were also represented well with those rough men from the class of 60. We had to have spirit for the team, so Miss Helen Jordan, Shirley Combs and Nancy Rhice were chosen as cheerleaders for the team. For track we had none other than 92 1 l -1 -1 pl I ! s l Y 1 l ll lf I I I I 1 K I Richard Tut Johnson, and coming in second, James Piggeeg others included Herbert Burrows, Donald t'Pie Thompson, and joining us our Junior Freddie Jones. We gave to the choir, Wilbra Billups, Martha Umstead, Wynona Rhem, Geneva Wilkins, Rachel Rayford, Loretta Johnson, James Schumpert, and joining later Erma Knight. Representing us at Homecoming were Beatrice Wynn as Miss Freshman and Helen Tate as the attendant from the freshman class to Miss Homecoming. September, 1957, we had lost many classmates, but gained others whom we learned to love as much as those we had lost. Herman Scott was again elected as Class President and as the previous year we were well repre- sented in all phases of our college's activities. As Miss Sophomore, we chose Ruth Haynes, who represented us in a lovely homecoming parade with Geneva Wilkins being our attendant to Miss Homecoming. The dean's list was again hit by many of us such as Curtis Means, who had a 3.00 average the last semester of this year, also chosen as vice- president of the Student Council was Nancy Rhice, who was a write-in- candidate. Many more adventures took place our Sophomore year as a number of us were initiated into various great Greek Letter Organizations. We just knew we were Big Wheels. Many other things were accomplished this year but we awaited our Junior Year and the Prom. 1 93 September 1958, saw summer overworked students scrambling to get back to the 'taug and we elected Scott again as our President. Event after event took place the Junior year. The choir toured Fla., and New York, Ethel Wooten was Miss Jr., Hilda Dawson was the attendant to Miss S. T. A., Wynon Rhem was chosen as the Kappa Sweetheart, Ruth Haynes became Omegas Sweetheart her Senior year, Patricia Davis was Sigma's Sweetheart, Alpha Kappa Mu accepted Geneva Wilkins, James Schumpert, Curtis Means, Reginald Landeau, Curtis Means and James Schumpert made Beta Kappa Chi, Rachel Rayford and Lillian Daniels made Phi Kappa Alpha, Wynona Rhem was elected Miss St. Aug., Geneva Wilkins as May Queen, and Nancy Rhice elected as the Hrst girl president of the Student Council in the history of Saint Augustine's College. We now look forward to the senior year. We're Seniors at last and we can almost see the shore. There is sorrow on board, Walter Kenan our freshman class president and a faithful worker of the class has deceased and left an empty chair on deck. We deeply mourned his departure. We can still hear the music for the Junior-Senior Prom which we gave to the Seniors and we can also still see the Turner Cup with the words, JUNIOR CLASS-FIRST PRIZE-Namon Flournoy as editor of the Pen has done a splendid job-The ship is slowly coming to the shore and we are all ready to step off the ship and see what awaits us .... Yes we have weathered the storm and now we must face the breeze. NANCY YVONNE RHICE, Class Historian 94 lin flllrmnriam MARGARET A. GLASCOE Supervisor of Laundry Through the Years!
