us as our homecoming attendant. A large number of our classmates was initiated into the different honor societies. Rosie Hood and Betty Byers were pledged into Alpha Kappa Delta and Sigma Rho Sigma. Delois Williams, Rosie Hood, Joan King, Virgia Basnight, Donald Morgan, and Marion Inman became mem- bers of Alpha Kappa Mu. Mary Arline, Beatrice Bryant, Violet Armstrong, Austin Cooper and Rosie Hood were inducted into Phi Kappa Alpha. Beta Kappa Chi added to its ranks, Delois Wiliams, Marion Inman, Norma James and Virgia Basnight. Many of us did not make the honor societies but excelled in other areas. We had such outstanding athletes in football as Earl Richards, Marion Inman, Adam Shaw, James Dawson, Napoleon Cloud, Leroy Davis, and others. In music, such musicians as Connie Elliott, R'Dell Jenkins, Herbert Horton, Ernestine Arnette, and Eugene Schumpert. Charles Adderly with his easel always at hand made an outstanding contribution in art. This year we were represented on the student legislature by Lester Purnell, Gladys Billups. Adam Shaw, Alice Peterson, and Austin Cooper. Two members of our class, Bettie Byers and Violet Armstrong, represented St. Augustine's at the United Negro College Fund Conference held in Philadelphia. During our junior year the male members of our class became proud occupants of the modernistic newly constructed Atkinson Hall. As the book was about to close on our junior year, we were eagerly looking forward to becoming the dignified seniors we had yearned to become for so long. We spent a pleasant summer in our respective places and returned in September of '56 with that air of senior superiority bursting out all over. We elected Adam Shaw as our class President. Other officers were Vice-President, Rosie Hood, Mary Arline, Secretary, John Thomas, Business Manager, and Delois Williams, Treasurer. Many of us began student teaching and found it a grand experience and a challenge. Delois Williams and Mary Arline were fortunate enough to do their student teaching at their Alma Mater. Well, our four years here at St. Augustine's were coming to an end. Nonethe- less, we still had some bright seniors who still wanted to take their places in higher ranks of the campus. Tyree Powell could not leave without making Alpha Kappa Mu. Mary Arline, Beatrice Bryant, Tyree Powell, Mable Wynn, Norma James, Violet Armstrong, Marion Inman, Eugene Schumpert, and Donald Morgan were named to Wl10's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Our queens for this year were Beatrice Bryant and Catherine Hughes. Beatrice Bryant reigned over the homecoming festivities as Miss St. Augustine's and queen of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Catherine Hughes was chosen as the first veteran's queen and also queen of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. The Student Council had a very successful year under the leadership of Austin Cooper and our senior representatives, Tyree Powell, Marie Staggers, and Adam Shaw very ably interpreted our wishes to our student government. Thus closes the book on the four chapters of our life at St. Augustine's. As we take our rightful places in this dynamic world, St. Augustine's will have played a major role in our lives and will always be vividly remembered. Class Historians MARY ARLINE TYREE Powisu. 16
