CLASS HISTORY The blissful memories of September 12, 1953 will always be cherished by the members of the present Senior class, for it was on this day that we, one hundred and eighty-seven frightened and timid freshmen, appeared on the campus of St. Augustine's. Within a few days, we became accustomed to a green freshman's way of life, and in spite of the rigid treatment from upperclassmen, we were determined to master all the dignity a freshman possibly could. We readily adapted ourselves to the big happy family in every way at St. August.ine's. We elected a dynamic group of class ofiicers, headed by Willette Payne. Many freshmen joined the Choir, Dramatics Club. Canterbury Club, and many other organizations. We were well represented on the football team by such players as Earl Richards, Adam Shaw, Leroy Davis, Leon Patton, James Jiles, Napoleon Cloud, Syvellie Cloud and others. Homecoming was a big event for all of us and Catherine Hughes couldn't have looked lovelier as our attendant. Our freshman year was quite an enjoyable and successful one. Many of our names were placed on the Dean's List, and still others excelled in other areas. It was during this year that two of our class members, Tyree Powell and Vera Robertson, represented St. Augustine's in the Intercollegiate Forum held at Bennett College. Vera Robertson was voted vice-president of the Forum. As the close of the year drew near, we began to reminisce over the many events and activities we enjoyed so much. And finally, it was time to close the book in the first chapter of our four years at St. Augustine's. After three months of vacationing, we returned as sophomores with hopes for an even better school year. We were sad at the loss of some' of our classmates, Esther Williams, Florence Blands, Iky Staton, Barbara Hope, and others, but we welcomed with opened arms such persons as Bettie Byers, R'Dell Jenkins, Ernestine Amette and others. Our class organized and Marion Inman was selected to serve as our president. Climbing the social ladder many of us joined the different sororities and fra- ternities. And before we could realize it, it was homecoming time again. Well! who could have looked more radiantly beautiful than Mable Wynn as our class queen. We worked even more diligently this year. Virgia Basnight and Esther Wade attended the student legislature held in the State Capitol Building. It was during our sophomore year that we were frightened half out of our wits by the devastating Hurricane Hazel. It was the first hurricane witnessed by some-and truly an experience all of us will long remember. Our sophomore year was highlighted by the Cenetral Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament. Many of us travelled to North Carolina College to see our team in the final game of the tournament in which Earl Richards and John Thomas were outstanding. Though we lost the final game, we kept our spirits high and looked forward to better years to come. Much wiser from our new experiences and our new ventures, we returned in September of 1955 as juniors. Many of our classmates did not return, but we welcomed Marie Staggers, Samuel Staggers, Gentry Bowens and other new class- mates. We again elected Marion Inman as president of the class. He led us through ta very successful year. Mable Wynn, even lovelier this year, again represented 15
