In it, we hope to record the progress of every individual, class, organization, and department of the college, and to show our parents, friends, and alumni what we have done in extra-curricular activities. A special feature in this yearbook is the Greek section in color. We are living in great hope that this will be a steppingstone to many more issues of the Falcon. To the patrons and friends who have helped make the publication of this an- nual possible, we express our most sincere appreciation. 2 DEDICATION -. X-v 'N-. THE REVEREND MR. SAMUEL D. RUDDER We, the 1955 graduating class of St. Augustine's College, are honored to have such a rnan of wisdom, consideration, patience, and benevolence as the Reverend Mr. Samuel D. Rudder for our College Chaplain and faculty member. It is therefore to you, sir, with deep reverence and humility that we dedi- cate the1955 Falcon . We feel that it is fitting and proper that We do so in recognition of your distin- guished work here, and in sincere gratitude for all the help and guidance you have given to us and to the other students of St. Augustine's College. 3 LIBRARY , iq -EQ? Let us review these years, and recall every incident lest we lose the enchantment of each precious moment. Timidly and with a flush of green, 120 new faces appeared on the campus of St. Augustine's College on September 17, 1951. These were the prospective members of the Class of 1955 and with this objective in mind the freshman un- packed their bags and set forth boldly to make their presence known and felt. Their efforts were thwarted and spirits cooled by the proficient and learned up- perclassmen, who were unimpressed except by the green on their faces. Within a short time, we became accustomed to our new way of life and be- gan to get into the swing of things. We elected an able body of class officers, headed by Horace Wade. Freshmen joined the choir, the choral club, dramatic guild, Greek-letter organizations, the brotherhood of St. Andrew, etc. We iden- tified ourselves academically, too, for the Freshmen class had the best repre- sentation on the Dean's list. Our attendant to Miss St. Augustine's that year was V. Collins. None of us will ever forget our talent night when we discovered that among us were such gifted artists as Doris Marie Scott and Vanilla Anderson. During this year, Herbert Oldman distinguished himself by being elected Athlete of the Year. Hillart Parker, Phillip Hand, William Alston, Wilson McDowell and others maintained rigid training schedules as they struggled to keep their berths on the football team. After a year and a summer, we had become adjusted to college routine and return in the fall of 1952 more determined than ever to reach our goal. We were fewer in number, however, missing such persons as Nancy Boyd, Daisy McMan- us, Patricia Fryar, Lerlene Higgs, Horace Wade, Katherine Gordon, Hilda Pur- vis, Jean McDaniels, Katie McCoy, Dorothea Wilder, Inez Knox and Janet Bows- er. Of course, their loss was compensated for by Janet Sames, Elouise Perry, Genora Lassiter, Susie Moore, Doris Gibson, Nellie Johnson, Jesse Robinson, MaryRidley, Joseph Perry, Doris Roane, Emma McNeil, LaVern McCommings and Annie Ruth Monk. Our Class officers, headed by Willie Battle, set forth to again lead us through a successful year. Again, we were well represented on the Dean's list and in the various activities of the college. Arthur Taplett was elected President of the Regional Canterbury Commission aposition which he held for two years. ln the court of beauty, our freshman year Valonia Collins, sophomore year, Gladys Townes was our attendant, junior year, Evangeline Basnight succeeded Gladys Townes as our Attendant to Miss St. Augustine's . Evidently the rigorous training schedule that Herbert Oldham, Hillard Park- er, Wilson McDowell and Phillip Hand stuck to was to their own advantage, for they were still members of the football squad and basketball team. This was St. Augustine's great year in basketball. We were runners-up in the CIAA Tour- nament, our Coach, Mr. R. D. Moore was elected Coach of the Year, and our Freshman player, Clarence Burks, was elected Most Valuable Player. At the President's Assembly, some members of our class again distinguished themselves by receiving certificates of merit for their participation in and con- tribution to the affairs of the college. At the close of this year, we left for home with the hope of returning the next year as sophisticated Juniors. As before, we were fewer in number, but we still remained strong in the spirit of determination, and determined we were. Ten of our classmates were tapped by Alpha Kappa Mu, Four by Phi Kappa Alpha, Five by Sigma Rho Sigma, Five by Alpha Kappa Delta. These students were Sarah Virgo, Azella Foster, 61 ' -.iw-.' Willie Battle, Rosa Walker, Marsellette Baker, Beatrice Bright-Davies, Leo Ox- ley, Thelma Washington, Marie Sherrod, Matilda Moore, James Lockhart and William Brodie. Our President that year was Wilson McDowell. St. Augustine's College did not go to the tournament this year, but as before Herbert Oldham was all-conference and through the efforts of Hillard, Wilson McDowell, Phillip Hand and others, we had a successful year in football. The dramatic club gave numerous successful presentations of The Robe . Jesse Robinson and Arthur Taplett from our class played leading roles. Pattie Johnson was the leading lady. Behind the scenes, Doris Gibson and Rosa An- drews applied the necessary makeup. This year, we elected Evangeline Basnight to attend Miss St. Augustine's. Aesthetically Leo Oxley played his rendition of Dream of Olwen on the Stars of Tomorrow show, while politically, Willie Battle introduced a bill to the State Legislature. Mr. Oxley also represented St. Augustine's College at the UNCF Conference in Washington, D.C.. Doris Lynch visited Virginia as our repre- sentative to the Women's Federate Convention. With the end of our Junior year drawing near, we began to feel anxious and elated at the prospect of being The Upperclassmen, and Dignified Seniors. When the fall of 1954 arrived, we returned, eager to complete our course of studies and take our places as alumni of St. Augustine's College. We again elected Wilson McDowell President. Other officers were Jesse Robinson, V. Pres.: Marsellette Baker, Recording Sec.g Marie Sherrod, Corr. Sec.g Arthur Taplett, Treas.g and James Lockhart, Business Manager. Willie Battle was elected editor of the year. We appointed Doris Lynch and Yvonne Mitchell to compose the class song, Arthur Taplett to write the Prophecyg Azella Foster and Marie Sherrod to write the class history and Beatrice Bright-Davies to write the class poem. Yvonne Mitchell and Arthur Taplett were newcomers to the honor societies. Willie Battle, Marsellette Baker, Beatrice Bright-Davies, Thelma Washington, Sarah Virgo, Matilda Moore, Rosa Walker. Arthur Taplett, Leo Oxley and Marie Sherrod were elected to membership in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Our region of Alpha Kappa Mu was presided by our own Leo Oxley. During our senior year, the office of Student Council President gained much dignity under the leadership of James Lockhart and our senior representatives, Yvonne Mitchell and Leo Oxley very ably interpreted our wishes to our student government. - In the world of sports, Herbert Oldman was elected again all-conference, and he and Hillard Parker worked together as co-captains of the football team. Under their influence, the team saw another successful year. At the CIAA Tournament, our boys though defeated were still unconquered in spirit. On Mother's Day, Yvonne Mitchell and Doris Lynch made their debut at their Senior Recital. Their days of rigid practice were well-spent, for both young ladies rendered music which we will never forget. Doris Lynch also sang on the Stars of Tomorrow Talent Show. To expedite the announcing of bulletins, our class decided to leave to this college, a public address system in the dining hall. Slowly, but surely, the pages of our yearbook began to fall into place. As we looked about us for someone to whom we could dedicate this culmination of our fondest memories, we could think of no one more dear to us than our Chaplain, the Reverend, Father Samuel D. Rudder. As we look back through the years, tears cloud our eyes as we realize the finality of this year. As each tiny memory pushes itself to the foreground, we can truly say--What peaceful hours we once enjoyed--.
