FORTY YEARS . . . FOUR just forty years ago in September of 1922, there arrived in the struggling young com- munity of San Diego, Father Martel, a priest of the Augustinian Order. His purpose: the estab- lishment of a high school for Catholic boys of this area. Sixteen days after his arrival, this zealous priest began instruction for eighteen students in a frame building belonging then to the parish of St. Vincent. This humble beginning was the founding of Saint Augustine High School, an institution destined for 35 years to be the sole secondary educational insti- tution in San Diego for Catholic boys. On the Feast of St. Augustine the following year the clergy of San Diego assembled for the dedication of a newly constructed monastery and classroom building at the present site of 33rd and Nutmeg Streets. center of the school.
