But as each year passes and today's students become tomorrow's alumni, Saints continues to fulfill the task which led to its institution thirty-seven years ago - the Catholic education of youth. Promoting this great heritage are the Augustinian Fathers, who brought to Saint Augustine High School at its conception in 1924, a rich tradition which has its roots in the inspiration and genius of that great Bishop and Doctor of the Church, Saint Augustine. It was from this great man's example of interest in youth and zeal for intellectual pursuit that the Order of Saint Augustine received its impetus. Following this spirit of their founder, the Sons of Saint Augustine founded and nurtured Saint Augustine High School. lt is to these men who draw from that inexhaustable spirit of Saint Augustine, the Doctor, and whose members emulate their great founder's desire to promote the Kingdom of Christ on earth in Churches and Nlissions, in Colleges and Uni- versities, in Academies and High Schools - such as Saints, that our 1961 SAINTSMAN is dedicated. 4, N .eats-R 'S J.. ..:..,'4 1 - , fav rw n, i I ,,g ,Aft -Fx' 'J .5 f 3' T rs, I-Q 'r ' g Z V g 'f-' fs .,,. Encompassing twelve classrooms and the Vice-Principal's office, this building is dedicated to the memory of Father John Sheehan, Provincial of the Augustinian Order, 1938- 1944. Q: I O I MR. JOHN FINAN, our able and respected vice-principal has, in his second year of office, successfully performed the most important and difficult job of disciplinarian. During his extremely busy day, he does such things as: admit late-comers, issue points, assign ground duty, fill out gym excuses, absentee admission slips and an infinite number of other duties. On top of all this he very ably teaches Mechanical Drawing and Algebra. Mr. Finan's fine personality and sense of justice make him one of our most respected and praise-worthy faculty members. FR. CHARLES J. DANAHER, O.S.A., smiling and jovial Prior and Procura- tor, of Saint Augustine has, besides his job of Prior and Procurator, the post of Junior Class counselor, which keeps him busy with the Junior breakfast, rings and jackets. Father is liked and respected by all for his wonderful sense of humor and his tact in handling the classes he teaches. Fr. Danaher will always occupy a warm place in the hearts of all those leaving Saints. Um , FR. DONALD WILLIAMS, O.S.A., left us and his post as Administrative Assistant to take over a position in St. Thomas Parish in Ojai, California, shortly before the end of the first semester. As a member of the fac- ulty, he taught French and Religion, moderated the C.S.F, and served as director of the Austin Guild. His cheerful greetings and ready humor have been missed at Saints. Fr. With a 4-4 record this team can well be considered as one of the more successful in the entire history of St. Augustine High School. Light always dispels fear and strengthens hope! The football record of the Class of '61 has afforded an un- deniable ray of light which shall surely usher in the dawn of a new era of foot- ball here at Saints: a dawn which will expell fear and introduce a new and vital- ized hope in all future Saintsmen who will wear the purple and gold on the gridiron. An electrifying start was had in 1957 when the City Prep League was daz- zled by our 4-3-1 record, high-lighted by a 25-18 heartstopper over Lincoln. In '58, Bobo Vitalich, one of this years co-captains, helped the team emerge with a 7-2-O record - the best in our school's history to that time! Another great triumph of that year was Saints' first victory over Hoover in a thrilling 39-7 conquest. Coach Carter produced our truly greatest football team in '59. We were the only undefeated team in San Diego with a 7-O-2 record. Two games of that year will be immemorialg the last second 13-6 victory over Mission Bay and the 12-12 tie with the S.C.l.F. Champs, San Diego High. This year saw Saints gain the prerogative of being the best defensive team in the city. Another first recognition for Saints. Dynamic is the word for this year's football season! Our powerful squad handed San Diego its first loss to an area team since '56, with a score of 14-6. Chula Vista and Mission Bay also felt the power of the purple and gold this year being defeated 20-6 and 26-6 respectively. Lincoln likewise was knocked out of the league race with an 18-14 lossf With this victory we kept our sixth straight and undefeated winning streak alive over Lincoln, which gave us a tie for sec- ond place. For the second consecutive year we had the best defensive team in the city. Thanks can be given to All-Leaguersg Oliver Walker Vic Player, Mickey Frank, Mike Crotty, and Bobo Vitalich for this tremendous season. Not to be forgotten and meritorious of our own all-league congratulations are Wick Hauser, Ray Castro, and Mike Moses together with the entire squad which hlas made this year's team, Saints' best. , These achievements though great, would not have been so without the un- tiring and dedicated efforts of two great coaches, and so we say, hats off and a.I.-..l.- A.- T-.. The additional Saints scores came by way of a safe- ty and a TD by Henry Daniels. awww Z The purple and gold's defensive strength showed its true power against the Mission Bay Buccaneers by lengthening our winning streak to its fourteenth undefeated game. The first quarter was dominated by the Bucs who made the first TD of the evening. A brilliant sixty-five yard pass to Bobo Vitalich from Oliver Walker soon tied the game at 6-6. In the second period, a six yard pass again by Walker enabled Ray Castro to put the half-time score at 13-6. Any chance for the Bucs was eliminated when Oliver Walker opened up the third quarter with a five yard scoring run to make the score 20-6. Footbcill The hope of the future achievements of our high school athletic program is measured by the ability of our Junior Varsity team. And the future hope of our varsity looks great as this year's J. V. posted an outstanding 4-3 record and captured second place in the league. After a loss the team really began to roll, with four straight victories. The two outstanding games of this season were the smashing of Hoover High 48-12 and the downing of San Diego High 13-12. The latter game ended with us on the Cavers 14 yard line. This marked the first time in our school's history our football team has been able to defeat a San Diego High team on the gridiron. The coaches agreed that it took sheer guts and determination against San Diego High speed to win this game. The most improved and inspiring player on this years J. V. squad was Mike Petry who filled the positions of fullback and defensive end. Having lost our important quarterback, Bobby Ahern, we were greatly handicapped in our championship game with Lincoln High, with the Hornets winning 6-O. With men like Mike Domenico, Richard M-cColl, Randy Ceiplis, Joe Burns, Jim McMahan, John LaMadrid, Don Stafford, Pete Carter and Paul Tuomainen, who played four positions with exceptional skill, the varsity team next year will be nothing but outstanding. A lot of inexperience gives a profile of the 1961 varsity basketball team. Their mediocre 4-18 record belies the real talent present in the hoopsters. Teamwork and an all-out effort was stressed by Coach Tom Flood. As a result, his men won some great victories during the year. They gave powerful Hoover, CIF Champs, quite a scare before running out of gas in the closing minutes losing only by a score of 51-45. The team was unpredictable but exciting to watch. Win or lose, they played the traditional horserace style characteristic of all St. Augustine teams. No one will ever forget the elation that swept the campus when we upset second- place Lincoln 56-51. But the game of the year was when the purple and gold crushed San Diego 72-55, to give us a fourth place tie with the Cavemen. Teams such as Hoover, Point Loma, Lincoln, and other strong fives filled the year's schedule. Co-Captains Pat Barry and Chuck Hoffman finished their four years with a good season, Hugh McConnell, a junior, kept us in many games with his hot- shooting, which gave him the distinction of being the league's 6th leading scorer. The whole program of the school is designed to convey the message that all men are dependent on God and that they must conduct their lives according to His laws. Thus, the Chris- tian philosophy of life is presented to the student. Holy Mass offers, every Friday morning, the opportunity for frequent Confession and Commu- nion, and a campus chapel encourages fullfilment of spiritual needs. To help the student in his spiritual life, Father Churbuck, the school chaplain, was available for individual counselling. Father also conducted per- sonal interviews with the members of the senior class concerning religious vocations. The Days of Recollection, one in February and another in Nlay, were very effective in reminding the students of their religious obligations. y I ,fit fwfr f i X All! x'x.m X , ff-is I ' :fi ,ll N we P T is I f . fr Fr. Continually super- vising and directing the officers in the fulfillment of their duties was Father Anthony Wasko, O.S.A. who infused varied and fresh ideas into this year's A.S.B. program. Among the projects introduced this year have been the use of girl cheerleaders for the games, a greater number of dances, added senior privileges and a greater parti- cipation ofthe freshmen in the school government. The outstanding social function of the Council was the annual ASB Ball, pre- sented in the magnificent Grand Ballroom of the Hotel Del Coronado. The Homecom- ing Day activities were also directed by the Council. The primary aim of the Council has been to encourage and emphasize student responsibility in school activities, whether they be academic, athletic, school or extra- curricular. The woes of Senior Court. fQ Completing its fourth year as a campus or- ganization, the German Club, moderated by Mr. Gerald Weber, has continued its primary aim of fostering a knowledge of the German language and customs. Juniors and Seniors comprise the organization's membership. Sewing as presi- dent of the club is John Asher with Robert Bort- feld as vice-president and Gerald Riker as sec- retary-treasurer. The club's schedule included joint outings with Our Lady of Peace Academy and subscription to German magazines. The Chess Society, moderated by Mr. Bonomo, and under the direction of President Claude Jones, com- pleted its seventh year of intramural competition. Chess games were scheduled twice a week with two noon recesses allotted for each game. Early in the school year the Chess Society's membership swelled to its maximum capacity of twenty-six members. The Society, in the comfortable surroundings provided by the physics laboratory, pursued its aim of increasing interest and skill in the ancient game of chess. The ladder system of rating enabled the members to learn the fundamentals of the game in accord with the grand traditions ofthe master. 91 2 .i I In their debut as a formal society, our letter-bearers have shouldered numerous responsibilities, officiating at the track meets and intra- murals. In addition, all faithfully serve on the Senior Vigilance Com- mittee. Led by Mr. Whittaker, they fulfilled their avowed purpose of enhanc- ing the value of the Varsity Letter through raising standards for the be- stowal of the purple and gold letter. Future plans include joint meetings with other schools as well as exclusive social affairs. Behind these decisions were President Vic Player, Vice-President Pat Barry, Secretary Rick Sherry, and Treasurer Bill Usher. It has been Bill's outstanding guidance that has provided a firm foundation for the perpetuation of this fine organization. Working with expensive donated equipment, the ambi- tious members of the Radio Club have made significant progress in furthering electronics among interested stu- dents. Activities include Morse Code practice, operating a radio amateur ham station and studying electric theory. Although the members had a late start, Mr. Ramon Bonomo, , the club's enthusiastic faculty moderator, helped to make it a prominent organization around campus. The Schola Cantorum, now in its fourth year, has con- tinued its tradition of per- forming Gregorian Chant faithfully. The chief charm of the group, taught and led by Father Harry Neely, O.S.A., is its informalityg it has no dues, and no regular meetings, but nonetheless it remains a close organization through the devotion of its members. The avowed goal of the Schola is to encourage the singing of the student body at Mass for the greater glorification of God. Music Club QL to RJ: Mr. McLaughlin, Mr. Wolff, Dennis Ebel, Bob Estrada, Nick Bridger, Jim Fay, Dan Dugan, Claude Jones, David Chevillon, Tom Reeves, and Dennis Gorsich. Continuing in its second year, the Music Club, under the direction of Mr. Wolff, is the rendezvous for all students interested in classical music. This year, the club members investigated the science of musicology-that is, they traced the development of musical forms from plainsong onward to contemporary composition, with emphasis on the Baroque period. ln order to do this more easily and to devote more time to the study and appreciation of music, the club is organized on a purely informal basis. I I I I Since Saints received its charter from the California Scholarship Fed- eration in 1956, our school's branch of this honor society has proved to be a real incentive to all of the student body. This year's organization can claim five life members, Daniel Dugan, John Benton, Dennis Ebel, Tony Laliberte, and Mike Crotty. These seniors ful- filled life membership requirements by being in the C. S. F. four times, membership being by semesters. A tour of Naval Electronics Laboratory and participation in two regional conferences in the Los Angeles area were some of the organization's varied activities. TRA- DITION is intended to provide a for- um forthe creative writing talents of the students of St. Augustine, Ros- ary, and the Academy of Our Lady of Peace high schools. Virtually every field of literary en- deavor is represented in its thrice- yearly editions. Poetry, essays, short stories and book reviews constituted, in the main, the first issue which ap- peared in February. ln a preface to the pilot issue, Fr. Aherne stated the aims of TRADI- TION. He said that the publication would devote itself to the develop- ment of its writers' understanding of the Christian Heritage, not by con- fining them to the letters of tradition, but by encouraging them always to observe its spirit. He further ex- pressed the hope that whatever form its literature may assume, or in what- ever style its ideas may be expressed, TRADITION will develop possessed of the stamp of the Judeo-Christian ideals, upon which our civilization is based. Augustinian Editors at work. This year's AUGUSTINIAN staff and editors can take pride in their accomplishments. The AUGUSTINIAN achieved its status as a monthly publication, and the lay-out of its pages has taken on an air of balance with news stories having a decidedly pro- fessional journalistic touch. The element of success in the newspaper seems to be the experienced help given by Mr. Harry Monahan, a reporter for the San Diego Union, who gave to the staff a productive series of lectures on journalistic style. The editorial triumvirate which held the responsibility of di- rection was headed by Dennis Ebel, Editor-in-Chief, John Som- ers, Sports Editor, and Daniel Dugan, Features Editor. For the first time, the club set up an associate membership system whereby students in- eligible for Mu Alpha Theta would be able to participate in some of the organization's activi- ties. Several of the club's members competed in several mathematics contests such as the Occidental College Math Field Day, in which member Robert Loya placed, The Mathematics Association of America Examination, and the Convair Astronautics Mathematics Contest. New reason for enthusiasm came this year with the addition of tour girls to the ranks of cheerleaders. The club, guided by its President, Mrs. Phyllis Crotty, met every last Monday of the month at St. Patrick's Hall. At these meetings, different mem- bers of the faculty would inform the club's members of the various aspects of Student Life here at Saints. Some of these discussions were headed by such speakers as Mr. Wolff, Fr. Williams, Fr. Churbuch, and our school principal Fr. Aherne. The whole existence of the Guild is permeated by a spirit of self-sacrifice and dedication to Saints, which can be seen by the various activities they sponsor. The Austin Guild this year has done a splendid job in sponsoring its various activities, the first of which was a successful home card party given during November. The next, which proved to be a huge success, was the annual Fashion Show on February 10, at the El Cortez Hotel. Our task, therefore, was great, and with the '61 SAINTSMAN we trust that that for- mer quality has matured with another year of experience. - With an early December 15th deadline, the formal production of the annual began when the staff submitted to the publisher the culmin- ation of three months of arduous preparation. Through the efforts of such men as, Mike Bujazan, Chuck Whitney, Wink McColl, and Don Birt, we reached our predesignated and final deadline of March 30th. Because of this ac- complishment we are pleased by the fact that THE SAINTSMAN for the first time in the his- tory of the school, met every one of its dead- lines. As co-editors, we have enjoyed working to- gether, and we both sincerely appreciated the 144 mlegzam I Ill 'U' NXMT' complete co-operation of the many students on the staff. Obviously the production of an annual would not be possible without the much needed as- pects of guidance, inspiration and assistance. We proudly and gratefully boast that these needed aspects met complete fruition with Joe Busco and Bert Nestor who supplied us with our quality senior portraits, Ross Reyman from whom we received our underclass pictures, the representative of the Mirro-Graphic Company, Bob Hopkins, and the two men who oversaw the entire operation, Fr. McLaughlin, a former SAINTSMAN editor, and Fr. Wasko. We wish to extend our thanks as well to all those who helped us in any way, particularly to the art staff, which included LaMont Mitch- ell, Barry Martinson, Larry O'Connor, Gary Sawaya, and Frank Gammicchia. Finally we thank the entire student body for whom the annual was produced and without whom it could not have been created. 03-f570,.a.. XJAQE' ffiywmffigaggf W 'V' ' Cf?
