With such a favorable landmark in our own neighborhood, the SAINTSMAN 1960 has chosen A Tour of the Zoo as its theme. On each division page, a pic- ture has been placed that is most ap- propriate for the situation. We hope that you, the reader, will look upon the theme with such humorous observations as we did, because, after all, it is said that animals only show a reflection of human nature. We, the students of St. Augustine High School, dedicate this, our SAINTSMAN to Father John Glynn, O.S.A. Father Glynn, besides being counsellor, teacher and disciplinarian for 19 years here at Saints, was also a cherished friend to us all. Father Glynn came to Saintsil9 years ago. Since that time he has acted as a teacher in such subiects as geometry and Latin. He has acted as a counsellor by helping the many students who otherwise would have been lost in the crowd. As disciplinarian Father worked constantly for the betterment of student behavior on and off campus. S t F A g Father was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts and educated at St. Johnlg'gs.VPrep School in Danvers, Massachusetts, Later he attended Villanova Collegefygand' the Catholic University at Washington D.C. lt was here in 1939 thathe was ordained as a priest in the Order of St. Augustine. 'S S A , The students of Oiai are indeed fortunatesto receive such a man as a member of their faculty. Those of us who know Father Glynn are sure that he will go straight to the hearts of his new studentslas he has gone straight to ours and there remain forever. - W P w r I V. Aherne, O.S.A., principal of Saint Augustine High School since l953, was-appointed Com- missary Provincial of the Augustinian vice-province on the West Coast earlier this school year. Father Aherne's appointment followed closely the sad news of the death of Father Thomas Austin, O.S.A., the previous Com- misary Provincial, in October of l959. In his new position, Father Aherne now has authority over the order's establishments here at Saints and St. Patrick's Parish in San Diego, Our Mother of Good Counsel Parish in Hollywood, and Villanova Prep School at Oiai, California. -ii IL . I Ill? R ey.,- .mmvvnz E. Our brilliant, wise, and personable faculty, although seemingly set apart from the student body by a barrier of dignity, have again managed to turn out a class of finished high school graduates from an abounding supply of fun-loving Saintsmen. This year, our educators have again succeeded in proiecting their wisdom to the students and, as always, have tried to cultivate their minds to a balanced, spiritual- educational level. Theirs is the immediate fate which awaits all high school teachers, but theirs also is the long-range reward of fulfillment which comes from im- parting their knowledge to the young. Without them all would have to learn by experience-by trial and error, a method prevented through the unsel- fishness and self-sacrifice of a group of Augustinian priests and dedicated Catholic laymen who comprise our faculty. . - ll Very Reverend John R. Aherne, O.S.A., School Principal Father John R. Aherne, honored principal of our school, directs or oversees almost every phase of Saints' scholastic and physical life. As head of the English Department, Father Aherne conducts a senior class in Honors English. It is to his credit also that an extensive honors course has been established covering the field of Math for all four grade levels. This is an extension of last year's singular Honors Math and Physics course limited to seniors. With such diligent yet forceful direction, the administration of the school will continue to operate as the precisioned machine it is. Mr. John Finan, hard working vice-prin- cipal after serving a year as athletic di- rector. Carrying the title of sheriff , he successfully maintains a strict order of dis- cipline which is vital to the atmosphere. Between his official duties, Mr. Finan finds time to teach freshmen algebra and me- chanical drawing. His time spent in the discipline office is continuously interrupted by streams of students seeking admission slips, gym excuses., etc., but his super- abundant spirit and devotion to students merit him as one of the most respected men on campus. Fr. Charles Danaher, O.S.A., Prior and Procurator of Saint Augustine. Father has for his responsibility all the school ex- penditures. Besides keeping his hand in the treasury, Father is Junior class coun- selor which keeps him busy with the iun- ior breakfast, rings, and iackets. Father is known around the campus for his subtle humor and his pets, Baby and Ella. His. home room is 4-D. Fr. Williams, O.S.A., our able Administra- tion assistant, responsible for all academic schedules, student placement, examination scheduling, and recording of all student marks.. The seriousness of his work is seen also in the laborious efforts he puts in the Mothers' Club Fashion Show and the C.S.F. dance, Blue Balloon Bounce. They stand on legs uncertain of the future and the things to come. At any time they may fall from the fence and find themselves in woe. The importance of religion at Saints can be seen when everything on campus comes to a halt as the Angelus bell rings at noon. The campus liturgical life is climaxed each week by a dialogue Mass every Friday in the gym. To renew the spiritual activity of the students, sev- eral retreats were held throughout the year. Each retreat day was spotted with conferences, prayer, and meditation. Father Keane, the school chap- lain, was available at all times for spiritual con- sultation. Such groups as the Y.C.S., the Sanctuary Society, the Altar Boys, and the Schola Cantorum also stimulated and promoted the spiritual life which is essential to the atmosphere of Saints. Meeting every Wednesday at noon, the Associated Student Body Council repres- ents the student body in the government of the school. Moderated by the Rev. Charles .l. Danaher, O.S.A., the group was composed of the four class officers from each grade along with the athletic and election commissioners, and the four A.S.B. officers, President Robert Padberg, Vice- President Joseph Mullen, Secretary Allen Gontang, and Treasurer Nicholas Vitalich. Under Bob Padberg's acute supervision many impressive patterns were set. A new tradition on campus was begun, that of singing the Alma Mater after basketball games in addition to singing it after all football games. Highlighting the year of A.S.B. activities was the A.S.B. Ball held this year in the spacious Palm Room of the Grant Hotel. Surprising everyone was the crowning of a sophomore and his date as King and Queen of the Ball. Nick Hooker and his date Evelyn Gentry won the titles by audience applause after the dance con- test. 3042 aa K 3iZ.9 'v+,R22:1P LW- tang, Treasurer N. Clause, O'Malley, and Bledsoe were excellent in the backfield. Although a tie with Hoover kept us from the City Prep title and from the playoffs, the team received a great deal of rec- ognition. Clause and Shields hooked up on a 25-yd. pass play and Clause counted on a 20-yd. end romp. The second half saw a complete reversal of form. Serra's recharged line blocked and tackled with a vengeance and rolled to a score. Only a last ditch effort by the line and two interceptions by O'Malley and Gilham kept the Cru- saders in check. Twomey, Moceri, and Vitalich were stand- outs for the Saints on defense. Point Loma shocked Saints by going 65 yards to score on the third play of the game. Their moment of glory was short-lived as Saints stormed back 60 yards in 14 plays with a Shields to Gilham pass racking up the tying score. The power plunges of Clause, O'MalIey, and Bledsoe, behind the blocking of Mickey Frank and Joe Mullen, gained steadily to keep the drive in motion. Saints beat the half-time clock to send Bledsoe over from the one yard line. O'Malley ran the P.A.T. So completely did Saints big line dominate the game, that Point Loma didn't earn a first down until the 4th quarter. San Diego took the opening kickoff and rolled 45 yards to score. Oliver Walker brought Saints right back with a 55 yard pass to Tony Gilham. Pat O'Malley ran 15 yards with a screen pass and Bledsoe scored from the five. The Cavers came right back by passing over Saints' line to tally making the score I2-6. Steve Simon was elected from the game for unnecessary roughness and this cost San Diego their passing attack. In the second quarter, an iniured Clause, in the game for the first time, was stationed wide. With all eyes on Clause, Bledsoe ran 45 yards through the center of the Caver team on a draw play to tie the score. O'MaIIey's run for the PAT failed. San Diego spent the second half repelling Saints' drives. Our deepest penetration was the Caver's I8 after a 30 yard Walker to Crawford pass. The whole line played excellently and was awarded the Player of the Week award. Gilham and O'Malley were outstanding in the de- fensive backfield. Carlton Bledsoe was the outstanding player on the field, beside serving as an inspiring force to the team, he scored both TD's and was credited with half of the tackles. Saints' SMEAR H. D. Saints' met Crawford on the Hoover field November l3th and recorded their first league victory. Larry Turner, playing offensive fullback for the first time, gained steady ground through the middle. Clause and O'Malley rounded the ends for long gains. Crawford couldn't match Saints' power and the line sprung Clause loose on scoring runs of 7, 54, and 80 yards. O'Malley picked up the other score on a 5 yard scamper. Crawford scored 2 TD's in the second half against reservesl Final score was Saints' 26 - Crawford 12 and increased Saints' string of un- defeated games to l l over two years. The mighty St. Augustine squad extended a school record undefeated string to l2 games over two seasons, continued a tradition of never having lost to Lincoln, and became the first Saints' team to go through a full schedule without a defeat by whipping lincoln's Hornets 21-6. The first Saints' score came 38 seconds before halftime, when Raul Martinez carried a I3-yard pass from Ollie Walker over the line. Eighteen seconds later a 55-yard pass from Don McDonald to Louie Tucker sparked a 70-yard touchdown play by Lincoln. George Clause ran his season scoring total to 66 pts. late in the third quarter by returning a punt 52 yards. less than one minute later Tom Twomey, a 6'-3 , 206-pound tackle, scooped up a fumble by McDonald and pounded 28 yards to a touchdown. Raul Martinez placed all three conversions. Running plays by Pat O'Malley and Geo. Clause, and hard blocking by the huge line contributed to the victory. He greeted one of the smallest squads Saints' has had in recent years, with only 8 players suited on several occasions. He had the added misfortune of fielding a fine team during a year when all the other league teams were loaded, Despite this handicap, the team whose starting lineup often included sophomores and iuniors compiled a credit- able record of 9 and 11, which included several losses by 1 or 2 points. Lead by co-captains Jake Crawford and Raul Martinez, we scored fine victories over Crawford and San Diego to finish fourth in the City Prep League. .lake continued a growing Saints' tradition of leading all other players in the C.P.L. scoring race with 375 points. Raul Martinez netted 275 points for 7th place among scorers and he also was named to the Brietbard All-City team. Both .lake and Raul had previously been named on All-League squads. A first for Saints' was marked in 1960 when our varsity met the varsity team from Uni- versity High. During the two contests, Saints' showed a clear superiority winning by the scores 83-28hand 85-34. Saints' produced a fine representative team in 1960 which at times displayed exceptional ability. We saw an excellent season pass, one which can be looked back on with pride. Despite the look on the pic- ture above, l really enioyed working on Saturdays and Sundays enabling us to present to you the 1960 Saintsman. We started the tedious task in early September, and continued our laborious efforts until the last dead-line in mid-April. Ot course, credit goes where credit is due. I want first to thank my loyal and obedient executive staff, 152 J composed of Rudy Ordona, Tony Laliberte, and C. Kottman who all acted as my number one assistants. Production credit goes to Joe Busco and Bert Nestor of Busco-Nestor Studios for the excellent work' done on the senior portraits, to Ross Reyman for the fine underclass pictures, to S. K. Smith Company for our cover and to Bob Hopkins of Mirro-Graphic Year- books for his ever-ready aid all during the year. A special wagon of thanks goes to Mr. Wade and Mrs. Hughbine of the Publicity Department for the San Diego Zoo who supplied us with help on our theme. Other students whose help I certainly appreciated were M. Buiazan, D. Ebel, N. Bridger, Dan Preston, G. Martinson, N. DeTuri, and R. Carriedo. . -1:2 I -1,3 ind' f' 1' ' Q AY :::, Z.-,- -' k gf .gulf-' - - ,5,g5'f ' r - ,J .. Tiff -'N-S ' Unis' kglawg 1 ' ' W Q ,.j-,Q ulr ' J. ix pf - Q - Hi Rug? 1' s 'M ' , . I. ' 1 .
