Tlleme: A YEAR'S SUBSCRIPTION The reader of the '59 Saintsman will probably notice the use of magazine covers throughout the annual as feature headings. We have done this because finding so many topics of interest in these periodicals reminded us of the relation to things happening at SAINTS. In the yearbook are recorded the LIFE of the seniors, TIME for the underclass, the LOOK of activities at SAINTS, the action of our SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, and, of course, the FORTUNE we have in learning from our faculty. All of these magazines fit into A YEAR'S SUBSCRIP- TION. 139 .5513 ,I lx.'l51 1 ' -1 Subscription lil! -id 'Y'-'F '1?' 1 -A -Ll.-:D J 'X FJ 5 FACULTY: Fortune is a magazine for businessmen, and the members of the faculty are businessmen. We know Father Ryan's love tor Saints has grown continually since his student days here in the middle 2O's, and we thank him in for it. Father's enthusiasm was contageous, and over the years iranged thru yearbook moderation, photography, choral activity, radio, art, and aviation. His versatility as a teacher will be wit- nessed by a generation ot students who had him for every subiect on the curriculum except one. Father started the band in 1940, taught every instrument for a decade and for years has been moderator ofthe band. We again thank Father Ryan for being to us, in a real sense, a father and invite all our readers to drop over to St. Patricks on 30th St. and say hello. 4 ,,r' ij L+ ww' xv. His behind-the-scenes method of administration leaves many unaware of his accom- plishments, suffice to say he is, literally, the man behind the team, lt is his task to coordinate workable schedules for students and teachers alike as well as to direct Saints' welfare in every phase of education. Since l954, he has brought the school to a position of prominence and respect in this city, climaxed by our admis- sion to the CPI.. lt is the dedication and diligence of men such as this that cannot help but spell continued success for Saints. San Diego 15, California 55 TIME TIME is an important factor in the life of every underclass- man. One of the most TIME consuming activities, besides classes, is homework. TIME is spent on the many school activities the underclassman takes part in. Dance commit- tees, campus clubs, out of class proiects and athletics have to be dealt with. TIME must be given to the underclass- man's budding social lite. Dates to keep, dances, parties, and games all require the young man's attention. Most of all, they look forward to the TIME when they will no longer be underclassmen, but full-fledged seniors. TWENTY-FIVE CENTS 8 MAY 12, 1959 .. Carmel team, we swept on to win seven out of our next eight games and became Saints best football team in 29 years. Losing only to San Diego High, our team showed the skill, strength, and determination that enabled us to take second place in the City Prep League after only our second year in it. Under the watchful eyes of coaches Tom Carter and Len Smorin, we were shaped into a group which thought and played as one huge, powerful, and smooth-running machine. This great team trompled over seven tough CPL members. Not standing still for one minute Saints defeated them one by one. The team handed Hoover High their first defeat from us in 28 years with a score of 38-7 and smashed Lincoln High for the second time in two years with a score of 26-7. The team produced a great many excellent players this year. Among these were Chuck Adams, the high point scorer in the CPL, whose tricky running and speed placed him on the CPL All Star Team, and Louis Yandall whose great strength and stamina put him also on the All Star Team. There were a great many others who contributed to the good of the team. Some of these are, Mike Cunningham, Wally Cubley, George Clause, Carlton Bledsoe, Bob Kimball, Mike Stroginis, Bobo Vitalich, and Vic Machanis. The Saintsman salutes the entire team, coach Smorin and coach Tom Carter for a iob extremely well done. Carmel team of Los Angeles 40-6. ln the first quarter things were even as both teams scored 6 points. ln the second period the Crusaders scored 20 points which technically didn't count because the clock ran 5 minutes over time. Our only touchdown was scored by Chuck Adams who picked up a Mt. Carmel punt and ran 85 yds. for the TD. The team was kept moving on the line by the playing of Louis Yandall and Carlton Bledsoe. SAINTS JOLT COLTS Saints made their first CPL start of the season a big success by trampling the Crawford Colts 20-6. The team struck quickly in the first period, With only 2 minutes gone by, QB Vic Machanis hit scatback Chuck Adams for a 40 yd. scoring pass. The Colts then got lucky and recovered a Saints fumble and made their only score of the game. ln the second quarter scoring rolled to a halt. Then in the last half, Pat O'Malley, the outstanding runner of the night, and George Clause broke loose for a TD apiece. Saints defensive line did a good job backed by line- backer Al Roman, fackle Bob Kimball, and guard Louis Yandall. This victory, the first over Hoover in Saints school history, was one which provided a lot of activity in our back- field. ln the first half FB Wally Cubley, QB Mike Cun- ningham, and HB George Clause hammered over for one touchdown apiece and HB Chuck Adams fol- lowed up Clause's run for the PAT. At the half we had a I9-O lead. Then in the second half HB Chuck Ad- ams exploded for scoring runs of 87 and 32 yds. and HB Al Roman ran the end for another 6 to put us out of reach. The line cracked only once in the last quarter to give the Cards their only touchdown. George Clause also added a 60 yd. kick off runback and an 80 yd. punt return to help us in our sweet revenge. SAINTS LYNCHES LA JOLLA Apparently looking forward to their game with San Diego, Saints ran over La Jolla 28-6. Chuck Ad- ams was the individual star of the game putting all four of our touchdowns under his belt. Chuck scored on runs of 2, 37, 37, and 5l yds, HB George Clause ran for two PAT's, Vic Machanis picked up one on a placement, and we picked up another 2 by means of a safety in the third quarter. Both Machanis and ,cw-Q 2 it NI Q 4 W .,. S MW I ' :YQ hi . , bf if A lvvvy I Bob Kimball U Clause picked up good yardage during the game running 25 and 35 yds. respectively. Chuck Adams brilliant campaign on this night earned for him the CPL star of the week award. SAINTS PLASTERS POINTERS Taking Pt. Loma in our stride by a score of 2l-6, we showed the fight we had in us. The real standout of the game was senior FB Wally Cubley who scored two touchdowns and was good for first downs when we needed them. HB George Clause set up and scored our first TD with 47 and 9 yds. HB Chuck Adams went over for the PAT, and later on Clause picked up one. Doing excellent jobs on the line were Sal Moceri, who recovered a fumble that set up a TD, Bob Butler, Rich- ard Carpenter, Mike Stroginis and Bill Oliver. CAVEMEN CONK SAINTS San Diego, as last year, on its way to the CPL title could not be stopped as it defeated Saints 5l-O. In the first few minutes of the game it looked as though it would be a fairly even match when George Clause ran an end run for 25 yds, But San Diego came back strong and inflicted on us our first league defeat and dropped us into third place. Some good line stand- outs in this game were Jim Riley, John De Scisciolo, Tom Stephens, Jim Collins, Dennis Shea, and Frank Constantino. A big help to the Saints' line this year, Junior tackle Sal Mo- ceri is aided after being iniured. k ,f- v w if n 1 X K X if N VARSITY FOOTBALL RECORD Saints 6 Mt. The other two on runs of 4 and 14 yds. Our other two TD's were made by half- backs George Clause and AI Roman running 49 and 5 yds. respec- tively. Kearny had a 13-12 lead at the half but fell before the team's point splurge in the second half. The triumph pulled the team into a tie for second place. The team can be thankful for the fine blocking of Bob Kimball, Larry Soria, Jerry Sherry, Jack ldiart, and Tom Goddard. SAINTS BLASTS MISSION BAY On Friday, Nov. 14, Saints broke away and beat Mission Bay 13-6, in what proved to be our hardest and best fought game of the season. Even with the strain of penalties against them, the team refused to crack. In the third quarter after two 15 yd. penal- ies, and a nullified 29 yd. pass play, Mike Cunningham pitched 17 yds. to the Bucs 16 and then Chuck Adams turned QB to hit George Clause for the first of his two TD's. Then late in the last quarter after Saints lost the ball, HB John Andrew intercepted a short pass and then Cunningham hit Clause for his second touch- down and the game. SAINTS LASHES LINCOLN In ending their very successful season the team trouncerl a be- wildered Hornet team and took sole possession of second place in the City Prep League football campaign with a 26-7 victory. Chuck Adams and George Clause shared the honors with two TD's apiece. One of Chuck's was a 30 yd. pass from QB Vic Mach- anis. OOTBALL Under the experienced coaching of Bill Whittaker, with assistance from Bernard Flaherty and Fred Boiorquez, this year's Junior Varsity ended the year with a 4-4 record in City Prep League play. The team showed their ability by beating such tough teams as Kearny and Hoover. Their excellent fighting spirit was displayed against San Diego, who managed to squeeze by the Saints in the fourth quarter. The backfield was sparked by Bob Reemelin, who called the plays at quarter- back, Mike Moses, Victor Player, Winston McColl, Raymond Castro, and Frank Sucetti. With such immovable men as Mike Crotty, Mickey Howe, Pete West, Mark Lapinski, Jim Lehman, Bob Ramos, Charles Vallejo, and ends Joe Bodenstadt and Richard Sherry, the line proved to be an important factor in this year's wins. The team was managed by Chuck Tricoli and Donald Swanson, Purple Hearts go to Jim Hicks, who sustained a broken collar bone, Frank Su- cetti, who was injured in practice, Oliver Walker, who starred in the game against Crawford, and John Townsend. Because of the experience gained on the Junior Varsity, the boys on the squad will be better prepared for varsity play. The J.V. hard at work practicing field goals. I . ' , X - m. L J. Heading the busy sports department was capable Frank Rosso, who doled out assignments to his faithful reporters Bill White and Jack ldiart. News Editor Bob Morrissey, Feature Editor Bill Andersen, and Culture Editor Vic Todaro rounded out a staff that accomplished work they can be iustly proud of. In keeping with their goal of raising spirit, they piled up an impressive list of events. They started out this year with a weekly billboard over Sheehan Hall. About 4000 booster ribbons were made during football season. The profits from one week's sales enrolled the entire stu- dent body in the Red Cross. During Home- coming week, huge signs were posted and a large balloon was sent up. A large social calendar was erected. School penants were also made. Two skating parties were held. With the fruits of their labors, the Pep Club Activity Room was kept well equipped. So that the room would be kept in constant usage, the ASB Council was allowed to meet in it. They also kept the ASB with its hands full. As one may plainly see, their energies were not to be wasted. The senior officers were: Anthony Rippo, pres. The annual Junior-Senior Prom was one of the biggest nights of the year followed closely by the Shamrock Shag, A.S.B. Ball and the annual dance sponsored by the Father's Club. The big hit of the year was with Big Jody Reynolds, and his Big Geetar which captivated everyone with such popular songs as Endless Sleep, Thunder, and others. Big Jody modestly signed autographs for the girls. The Easter Monday Ball, sponsored by the Father's Club was a huge success due largely to the presence of Harry Happy Hare Martin, the well known disc-iockey for radio station KCBQ. About S200 worth of records and cash prizes were given away. The Happy Hare Hop, intro- duced for the first time, was enioyed by all. Outstanding in his tum- bling ability was Vic Rodriguez. Junior Mike Gontesky and sophomore Don Birt gave our cheerleaders the appearance of a well drilled team.
