'-vw I THE REVEREND FATHER JOSEPH WIEST Pastor of St. Augustines Parish It is with a great deal of pleasure and sincerity that we. the seniors of the classes of 1956, respectively dedicate this, our yearbook, to the Rev- erend Father Joseph Wiest, the Pastor oi' St. Augustine's Parish. We recog- nize him to be our benefactor who has graciously and with an intense devotion accepted the extra burdens of caring for the property which constitutes our high school, and of maintaining it as a noble institute of learning. We realize that you, Father Wiest, have been an indispensable factor in the promotion of the Christian education of youth, as advocated by His Holiness, Pope Pius Xl. For this, Father, we shall be eternally grateful. ,bf 153 , 2 fa 5,35 ' 5, K .. F' fl' f, Z J A , f r xx Sw , if BROTHER ANDREW, F.S.C. Kneel- ing: Co-captains Bill Condy and Tom Wallace. Rag XT... Moderator 4 Brother Augustine. Coach - Mr. Gene Arcery. 78 amify gt-wLef6af Under the tutelage of Coach Gene Arcery, the Varsity Basketball team compounded a 9-14 record for the 1955-1956 season. The many stellar performers in- cluded co-captains Bill Condy and Tracy Douglas, who are now matricu- lating at St. Bonaventures and Notre Dame, respectively. Tom Wallace, co-captain, scored 266 points for a game average of 25 points. Hank O'Lee hooped 233 points for a 21 point-per-game average. How- ever, the most profolic scorer was Jimmy Mullen who notched 360 for a 20 point average. Mike Meyer added much vigor to the team as did Tom Scarparti with his jump shots. Bernie Sharkey was consistent as our set-shot artist to- gether with the big men, Mike Costello and Johnny Ennis, who patrolled the backboards. Our best rebounded was Jimmy Ahern who snared 15 balls per game and who also averaged 12 points per game. Bob Bogusky, the top scorer of the J .V., and Bob Cassola, the leading Frosh scorer, were added to the Vars- ity squad towards the end of the sea- son.. The team averaged 65 points per game and the most memorable wins included a 71-69 victory over Trinity in a double-overtime sudden death period when Tom Wallace scored on a driving lay-up and a 56-52 victory over St. John's Prep at the St. Francis Armory. The Varsity played in three public armories and was invited to the Manhattan Prep Tournament as well as the K. of C. Tournament. The freshmen won the Brooklyn division of the C. H. S. A. A. with Paul J amin, John McMullen, John Mc- Keon, John Tomer and Bob Cassola as the starting five. The hill and dalers started their season with high hopes since a number of veterans were returning. In spite of various injuries and the fine competition we met, the Lancers made a fine showing. From a Held of 60 or more teams, we scored 5 in the St. John's Meet, 5 in the N.Y.U., and 6 in the Ford- ham competition. Our outstanding cross country men were Tom Caminitti, Joe Carpenter, Johnny Corry, Tierney O'Rourke, Gerry Wells, Cliil Wilkins. In the Catholic Relay Carnival, the open- ing meet of the season, Augustine won the sprint medley. Our one-two punch on the boards was Tierney O'Rourke, versatile mid- dle distance man, and our two mile relay team consisting of Tom Caminitti, John Corry, Mat Schieber and Jim Sweeney. The high point of this team was reached in the Mayors Meet when they scored first in the two mile relay with a fine time of 8:18. The one disappointing factor in the indoor season was the injury sustained by our star sprinter, Charlie Arciello. Brother A. Michael Varsity Coach 't fi. I Brother A. Dugan, B. Quann, N. McAdams Brother Timothy coach According to Kiphuth, the famous coach of Yale, the most important quality of a good swim,- mer is the will to succees. As he says, I've seen a lot of big boys with all the muscles but they didn't get far because they didnit have the will powerf' This is what is expected of the Lancer's swimming team - fellows who love to swim and have the guts to stick to it. We don't ask anyone to leave the team because we don't have to. Any boy who tries out for the team and hasn't the guts to work hard just drops out of his own accord he doesn t need any pushing Vigorous practice IS required in order to mam tain the highestcompetitlve form However the final reward is ample compensation The results of the practice has already paid off in victories over Power and Trinity These results would be enhanced by additional support from the student body Alcantra Weclxerle Scholes and Gannon Bottom Burke Kolsar Guido Alcantara Lauer Wal ters Middle Hudson Christiano Shields Moody Red mond Quaid Scholcs Top Conway Whalen Gannon Fleming Leonard Coburn Weckerle , . , . . . . . . , , , . . . . . v . One of the most successful this year was the Alumni Smoker. An annual occasion of greetings, hand shaking and reminiscent conversation is sparked by the Alumni Smoker. Every year those who have passed through the portals of St. Augustine, young or old, gather to- gether and renew those friendships they valued so highly in high school. Turning Father Timell in reverse, they place in those initial carved, ink-stained desks which they once occupied and recall the valuable days which they spent, not under, but with the Brothers and laymen. After an evening of congenial harmony, the former Augustinites depart, some to their families, some to a rectory and some to a Brotherls house. However, which ever one it may be, the next affair is anticipated with renewed interest.
