'ii -.za 'X- , ' ff- Class History nf January 1953 FRESHMEN: It was a grim, cold day in February of 1949 when one hundred beaming youths were herded into rooms 12 and 14, and exposed to the intrica- cies of higher education . . . We were fascinated by the life of protozoa and the frogs and fish we were to dissect . . . In June, we embarked on our first trip to Rye Beach, and then we were on our own . . . In 1B, we joined the track team to pass Religion, as the saying wentg we won the freshman intramural cross- country meet, much to the delight of Brother Michael . . . To the shouts of Optime, optime, Mr. Neville convinced us to translate ideas . . . With the aid of Brother Francis, we followed Jim Hawkins as he set about finding Treasure Island, while also discovering that Brutus is an honorable man. SOPHOMORES: Upon regrouping, we were saddened to find that several of our colleagues had fallen by the wayside . . . While Mel', Ott was busy pro- nouncing Nebuchednezzar, Egyptian hieroglyphics was found more difficult to translate than Latin. During this time Mr. Brustman drove home the fact that the Argonauts were not a baseball team To the tune of Veni v1d1 v1c1, we conquered the Latin course Geometry while stumping a few UQ was met with equal challenge We were likewise exposed to th culturing influence of French while learning that pas du tout was not the father of twins Brother Leo similarly assured us that the Latin Quarter is a section of Paris rather than a night club Mr McMurray fWhat school had the honor dear childj proved that money is the root of all evil as he related the tale of Silas Marner Brother William converted us to master draftsmen while repeating Five minutes before the end of the period gentlemen JUNIORS We were now upper classmen and began to assume our responsi bilities by voting in the ADC elections Brother Eugene fThe Prmcej thoroughly demonstrated that x y squared is not xy squared In the Physics lab we thrilled to the mysteries of Archimedes Principle accompanied by the cries Thats all wrong Rather painfully we detected the voltage of a storage battery Finally in 3B the two classes were combined thereby producing a double header for the faculty The Regents came and went and we were SENIORS At last gentlemen of the school The tall form of Brother Peter furthered our French culture as Make signs to the dullards became the class by word Mr Ward QYou can lead a horse to water but a pencil must be leadj again became our tutor for mathematics We also learned to Take a zero and smile The notion that The Times was our textbook persisted until gradua tion The famous chlorine experiment will long be remembered by the class and by Brother Thomas Finally we became Student Councilors running around the cafeteria with a summons book in hand Gambales Hero Sandwiches became the rage of the cafeteria The prom on the night of january 16 at the Hotel Astor and the Senior Week program are now merely vivid memories The long awaited gradua tion commenced on January 26 at Loughlin and we were prepared to enter the cold cruel world 'gi P1141-x A l .' Each edition carries a resume of the school ac- tivity for the preceding month and a half. Accordingly, space in THE LANCE is al- ways at a premium. The composition, edit- ing, and production of the paper affords excellent experience to those fortunate enough to be on its staff. Needless to say that THE LANCE is most enthusiastically received on appear- ance. But it is important to say that the staff is always on the alert to keep on pro- ducing a paper of such an excellent tradi- tion. Besides student body circulation, THE LANCE has a wide circulation through ex- change with other school papers around the country. 1 -fi be cf-5. b h m Kgs. ELEE Among the varied activities of the school we find some which give an opportunity for partici- pation to those students appreciative of the more cultural aspects of school life. Each Friday after- noon, the Glee Club, under the direction of Mr. john Renner, may be heard practicing for the functions at which they are called upon to per- form. The Debating Team represents the school in the many forensic contests conducted by the III. Catholic and the Azarias forensic leagues. These boys also form the nucleus of those who enter the speaking contests sponsored by the Ameri- can Legion, Hearst Newspapers, etc. Those interested in art have the facilities of the art room where they may spent their leis- ure time making posters for the diocesan con- tests, or pursuing their skill in the field of ceramics.
