St. Augustine High School students are always glad to donate their time to the community. When Don Alfonso de Borbon-Dampierre, Duke of Cadiz and Anjou visited St. Augustine on October l, the R. O. T. C. was on hand to lend military presence and dignity to the occasion. The band was called upon to perform at the dedication of the Tournament Players Championship golf facility at Ponte Vedra. The Special Olympics got a boost this year from en- thusiastic SAHS cheerleaders who taught the kids cheers and assisted with other facets of the event. Through stu- dent blood drives over forty pints of blood were made available to the St. Johns County Blood Bank. These are but a few examples of the many ways in which SAHS sup- ports the community. Money has always been and will forever be a major. concern of the clubs at St. Augustine High School. Clubs need money to pay dues, to sponsor activities and. of course, for parties. Many clubs also raise money for charities such as the Community Chest-United Fund. The classic fund raiser is the car wash. On any given Saturday one can usually find a car wash at the Burger King on U.S. I South: it's the number one location for car washes. A successful car wash requires hard work but the profits are great and most students agree that it's a lot of fun. A bake sale is another popular fund raiser. Some clubs set up the baked goods in front of stores or supermarkets while others sell their wares at school. There are many ways that clubs can raise funds: selling candy or other merchandise, doing odd jobs. contests, raffles and a long list of others. The only things necessary to earn money are imagination and hard work and SAHS students have plenty of these. VW S CLUBS WORK HARD ,MW - H ff 'W My f ,f rf. f 4 . . ffff , . f is ,Q ,f f in . llx Qs. During spirit week there were many activities which kept the students busy. Each day was designated as a different dress- up day, such as Jeans and Jer- sey , Hats, buttons and ribbons . and Fifties days. There were also many contests which gave ev- erybody a chance to show their spirit. S. O. T. I. held a spirit hat contest, and class competition came on strong during skits which the Juniors won. First place in Hall decorations and Beta Club's spirit chain contest both went to the Seniors. Try not to sing the words from 'Get Up and Go' this timel These were just a few of the comments that could be heard in the auditorium while skit rehearsals were being held. ln the end all the hard work and planning was worth it as the curtains were pulled on the night of October 30, l980 and A Night in the Past unfolded. The competition was tough and as the night came to an end the Junior Class edged out the Seniors by seven points for first place and the sophomores finished third. 5. ' 7, The students in the music depart- ment classes have really displayed their talents this year. The march- ing band, stage band, chorus and choir are made up of hard work- ing musicians and vocalists who performed at various functions throughout the year. The marching band added excitement to all of the football games by playing and performing field shows. The marching band joined forces with the stage band and the chorus and choir to present an excellent Christmas program. Following the program the chorus and choir tuned in on the Christmas spirit by caroling through the halls. The definition is a three mile race across a tough course. To prepare for this event the male runners work out on an eight to twelve mile run which includes hills and dirt roads. Talent played an important role in the success of this team. They practiced hard and kept their chins up through trying times. Their responsibilities include putting on skit night, the homecoming field show. and the dance after the game as well as organiz- ing the junior class skit and hall decorations. Fortunately there is a two-month breather before plans begin for the big event-the .lu- nior'Senior Prom. Planning for Prom starts with the money-raising magazine sale in late January. They show their Jacket spirit by giv- ing up their free time just for you. You are very fortunate to have these dedicated men to head our school system. You become familiar with our administration at one time or another. Whether you're getting a note signed by Mr. Bishop or trying to waste time in the halls, you may hear a loud voice shouting, What are you doing out of class? Yes. if you realize it or not. Their jobs include duplicating mate- rials for teachers, bookkeeping, maintaining at- tendance records and keeping Mr. Grider in linel The continuous growth of our student body re- sults in more and more work for our guidance staff. They arrange schedules to fit your individ- ual needs and listen when you need someone to talk to. Although each counselor is assigned a grade level, they often work together. You are very lucky to have such fine art and music departments. The art department offers classes in drawing, painting and ceramics. In these classes students learn the techniques of self-expression and individuality by creating their own masterpieces. A variety of new classes in music have been added to enrich our stu- dents' musical talents. The special education department is very helpful to many students. These students may require individual atten- tion to comprehend their studies. Thanks to these patient teachers they receive this special attention. The business department offers courses in shorthand, typing, accounting, and business law. These courses are open to guys as well as girls and help prepare our students for all aspects of family life. Where did life originate? This question has puzzled scientists for years and it's still puzzling the students in Biology 2. This question and many more are the topics of Biology l!PhysicaI Science I, Physical Sci- ence 2, Chemistry and Physics. Maybe someday one of our students will answer these questions. Our library is one of S.A.H.S.'s greatest resources. Not only is it bright and cheerful. making it an ideal place to study. but it also contains all sorts of infor- mation in its many reference, fiction and non-fiction books. Students and teachers alike take advantage of the precious materials that are sitting in our library. HOME EC AND SCIENCE 2. 210 AND LIBRARIAN STAFF I. Left to Right. Debbie Palmer. Susan Graham. 2. FOREIGN LANGUAGES ENGLISH Do you want to learn another language and have fun in the process? You've come to the right place. We offer two foreign languages, French and Spanish. ln addition to speaking and writing the languages, you can learn the customs that accompany them. Whatever your choice. the English depart- ment has the course. There are different levels of English for each grade. For exam- ple: You can learn basic English in 2a, or you may study the English language in 2. English 2B allows you to expand your thinking with poetry, literature, and gram- mar. Students who take R.O.T.C. are not neces- sarily joining tbe Army, nor are they head- ed towards a career with the Navy. These students are just learning self discipline not to mention self-respect. If the answer to these questions is yes, then you better enjoy In School Suspension. because that is where you'll be going for a few days if you're caught. This is a brand new program at S.A.H.S. and Mr. Alexander is in charge. Here the students do all their assigned work in an isolated room. No talking is allowed and all regular work must be completed. Motor safety, parallel parking, reverse weave, and dodging cones are just some of the important skills learned in driver's education. The course deals with how to handle the automobile . Hope- fully these skills don't go driving out the window after classl The goal of the social studies department is to in- crease the students' understanding of the govern- ing principles of society. The department offers several courses such as Civics, World History, World Geography, U.S. History and Psychology. The students will hopefully leave witb a better un- derstanding of the world around them. 2. 4 LICATION SQCIAL STUDIES IVDRNEITS ED I W f WWQWZL FT IHQMX QQ 'F x ii: ' X 0 x R e PHYSICAL EDUCATION CAFETERIA Complete physical fitness is the goal of your p.e. staff. But do you realize how much work is put into the lunches? The cafeteria staff knows. since that is its job.
