Q. I 1. ' boa I CLASS : MI-IISTORY .I al Once upon a time, in the year 1949, a dramatic event occurred. To 64 young ladies however, it was more than an event and more than dramatic. It was history mak- day, St. Anthony's School of Nursing ing. For on that became their new home. All those strange staring faces . . .that incessant hum of conversation. In which room am I going td live? .... more inportant, with whom am I going to live?,' Then the overwhelming thought, What have I done now? But there was no time for such reflection. As part of orientation each of the new girls had a big sisterl' to aid them in getting acquainted with the nurses, home and its occupants, as well as to encourage and cheer them. But, my goodness, that en- courage and cheer business! Somehow, a 'lyou don't know what you're in for, but you'll find out attitude could be detected. Well, on with in schools of this t in the daily schedule at St. Anthony's. For four months, classes reigned supreme! And at the end of that time the Uprobiesl' were confidant that they had left little unlearned. Along with all the learning, extracurricular activities had been delved into .... a hen party in the auditorium once in awhile, a few dates with real honest to goodness men. learned early the histor ! Classes, the usual attraction y . . ype, certainly didn,t take a back seat . . .and our tender young things delicate are of griping. In uniform at last, the bright-eyed lassies were eagerly anticipating their first venture .... actual general floor duty. The likes of that day will surely go down in the annals of history! Me? .... give an enema. . . . oh, gee what if it doesn't work! Oh, I couldn't stick them with that needle! Don't look at me, Doctor, I'm new here! And it didn't help matters any to see full- fledged junior and senior nurses rushing around looking important .... how did they do it? The thought that some day they would be doing that seemed fantastic. And then there was the strange sensation of acute pity and fascination as they looked at the dying and even began to care for them. God moves in strange ways .... they learned that very soon. The first goal was reached by these young ladies when they received at last their dignity, personified in a little white cap. By theri they had become accustomed to living with strange girls in close quarters .... sharing the bath .... being in at ten olclock every night, and a few other strange things. And capping had one very gratifying reward .... no more study hall from eight to nine o'clock each evening. Doesn't sound like much, but that one hour had knocked a hole in many an even- ing. Now, in cap and uniform, the new freshmen pranced onto the floor looking very intelligent .... inwardly, they felt the terrible truth, oh, how cruel is ignorance! You know, this all sounds kind of funny, now, but really, it wasnlt. The times they wondered if 'lbath-giving would ever be ended and bedpans emptied. . . .the times they curbed the urge to squelch the sweet smiling creature who sailed by with an Aren't you through, yet? Mistakes were their teachers, and what teachers! Pages and pages could be written on those months of orientation. Freshmen became juniors, then, came night duties and reliefs .... later on, senior duties. Yes, they were people of note, they felt .... for about fifteen minutes .... then came the storm. On relief, it was, Did you see that order?', Why hasnlt my patient had the hot packs I ordered? .... I've been waiting for a hypo for hours! And on night duty, My light has been on for an hourg what're you doing out there, pitching horse- shoes? You have an emergency coming in .... get oxygen up and a suction ready! Uh-huh, they were people of note. Would they ever learn? Wouldn't they be better stenographers or librarians,'or housewives? The answer was always no, however, when a patient said, You've made me feel so much better .... you're a good nurse! And they really said that once in awhile! In the midst of this torrent came sweet relief, there were summer vacations .... sounded like heaven! And swimming in their own pool .... playing tennis and soft-ball occasionally, if they felt they could stand the strain, and other little tidbits of fun here and there. These things always gave the needed lift. Within the next few months Sister began posting some dates on the bulletin board .... that meant psy- chiatric affiliation .... three months away from St. Anthony's! Oh, joy! Oh, bliss! Little did they know how soon those exclamations would run more like this, Take me back home! If I have to stay here another day, I'll go crazyll' But they stayed, and they didn't go crazy. And coming home was good. With affiliation had begun for most of them, the problem of getting in their major requirements. Things were moving a little faster, now. There was three months of Obstetrics. . . .a happy place most of the time, and then that long- feared time in surgery. What a disciplining place! They X' fi if? They tripped over light cords, contaminated suture, and con- sequently, became fast friends with the doctors! About this time the Junior-Senior banquet and prom was the talk of the nurses' home. Never will the date- situationn be forgotten! Every girl wanted to go with a tall, cute man just as though he were right outside her door, waiting to go with her on that special night! But all problems were solved .... everyone had a dateg and come the evening of the big event, you've never seen a more beautiful bevy of girls. Time crept along fit seemedj , and in the senior year, the girls received a precious article of clothing .... a blue and red cape. Oh, can you imagine the wonderful sensation of being a senior and wearing a cape! Those first two years may have been worth it, after all. Were people staring at them in admiration and envy or did they dream it? Three more months and one more requirement .... Pediatrics. There they learned about the little ones, from a few months old to 14 years. Oh, those little monsters! They wouldn't eat, they wanted Mommy, and they C A fp Q if .5 wanted to go home, and so it went. More than once the urge to turn up that part of the anatomy designed for sitting and apply the hand with force was stifled with effort. But, children's department wasn't all that way. . . .it was a joy to see thin, sick babies bloom into health, to hear them laugh and make cute remarks and to see Mommy and Daddy happy because their baby was get- ting well. Then it was springtime, 1952, and .... you guessed it! Graduation time was drawing near. Senior Day, going to Mass and then eating breakfast with their mothers brought the first full realization that they were leaving St. Anthonyls soon. There was picture-taking all over the lawn .... excited talking and laughing. Really, in their graduate uniforms, they were the personification of true professional dignity and beauty. For a few min- utes, anyway. And this was the time that the true sophistication of the seniors was seen .... for they had to dress upl' to attend teas which were given in their honor. Oh, they were so refined. The teas were truly lovely and the seniors appreciated and enjoyed them very much. is NS .gui S .1 .fW?QWwM,, f A T ' X ,Zi ,W N- f 1 W is Y L .y ta iii. qi On May 10, 1952, S1 young ladies .... thirteen less than with which the group had started .... received their diplomas. This certified that they had each com- pleted three years of nurses, training and were now full- fledged graduate nurses. Were these the same girls who entered training in 1949? No, there was a difference. These girls were not only no longer student nurses, they were women. They looked to the future with memories of friendships made, with the courage to accept life in its entirety and with a silent word of thanks to the Friend who had helped them through three long years. Those years had left an indelible mark on the charac- ters of these women. God grant that it be a mark holy in nature, and if so, that it may remain forever en- graved. O,DONOGHUE, M.D. It is with considerable gratification that I appear here to participate in the graduation exercises of this 1952 class of nurses of St. Anthony's Hospital. I have had the privilege of helping in the professional advancement, patching up skeletal structure and even in some small way building the moral stamina of this group through your learning to tolerate my own impatient demands. Some of you with tongue in cheek, have suggested that I take advantage of this opportunity to state in public some of the de- ficiencies that I have pointed out to you in private. Time will not permit nor courage suffice for such a major project. Many have -been free with anecdotes with which to leaven my talk, but by the time I have properly fitted them to this environment, I find that they are heavier than the speech itself so I will forego regaling you with the adventures of this and that and we all shall profit thereby. Seriously, I have a very warm feeling for this group reaching closer to your heart's desire tonight. It includes many good friends and capable associates in the healing art so important to us all. To the physician and the nurse, this profession must be truly close to the heart. May I extend to you my congratulations on your chosen field. You have chosen no sterile pursuit conceived in boredom and dedicated to mechanical perfection. Yours is a living, vibrant profession, ever changing, ever advancing, ever seeking improvement. True enough, many of its aspects hold little glamour and if one becomes over-obsessed with the tedium of bed-making and pan-toting, the spark may be lost. These things are the dross from which pure gold may be distilled, for where is the job that does not have its distaste- ful moments. These moments should merely serve to point up and emphasize the more stimulating aspects of this interesting and valuable profession. Why is medical science so very invigorating and why does it offer such rich rewards? Have our main medical goals been attained? Are we resting on the plateau from which we must inevitably descend or are we still climbing with the goal ever higher? Some years ago, the exact moment is unimportant, I stood on the pinnacle of graduation, clutching an M.D.n in one hand and my illusions in the other. Suddenly, it seemed to me that I had arrived too late, all medical goals seemed attained. The giants in my chosen profession had solved most problems and left for me only the prosaic task of carrying out their dictums. True, lwrniciout anemia could not be relieved or cured, the diagnosis of staphylococcal septicemia was a death warrant, anlibiotics were to be impossible since that which would known destroy bacteria would destroy body tissue as well, fool would dare to operate on the heartg only a xypbilis could probably never be cured, an old person breaking a hip should really not expect to Walk again. Yes indeed, it seemed that there was little left to do in this ancient field of medicine. On my turning to orthopeclics, a relatively new specialty twenty-five years ago, I found things little better. All the diseases had been described, all opera- tions planned and named after their originators. Reaching Oklahoma and the Crippled Cl'1ildren's Hospital, I found the five major causes of crippling were: first, tuberculosis of bone and joint, second, osteomelitisg third, poliomyelitis, fourth, spastic paralysis, fifth, congenital deformities. Let 'us re- view for a few minutes what has happened to these conditions that I had so sadly thought offered no new fields for conquest. First, tuberculosis. The Crippled Children's Hos- pital was planned with an outdoor porch on every floor and every wing in order to accomodate the sun treatment of tuberculosis. Wards were full of tuberculosis of the spine, of the hip, of the knee, all in various -stages of plaster casts or metal frames with traction appliances. Where are they now? The tremendous nursing problem of the child confined in bed, in a frame or cast for two, three, four, five or even six years is no longer a common one. I com- plained to an associate the other day that we hardly had enough tuberculosis to teach students and resi- dents properly. His enlightened reply, 'lWhy teach it then?,' seems pertinent indeed. What has happened? A combination of associated sciences has cleaned up dairy herds, pasteurized milk, improved feeding of babies, revised hospital care, devised new operative techniques. The result: tuberculosis of the bone is no longer a major problem. Second, osteomyelitis. A few short years ago, we all dreaded the arrival of the youngster with acute osteo. At best, it meant months of morbidity and per- manent crippling, at worst, death. It was combatted by surgery, general support, transfusion and other measures but remained a tremendous nursing problem. Slowly, the advent of antibiotics, first Prontosil, then sulphas, then Penicillin, Chloromyce- tin, Streptomycin and a host of others has all but eliminated this scorge of childhood. Third, polio. Here is a disease carrying a tre- mendous challenge which seems unsolved and un- solvable, but wait! Consider a few moments the changes in polio care within the last few years. Until 1943, no acute case of polio was knowingly admitted to any hospital in Oklahoma. The early Care of polio now considered all important was unknown twenty- five years ago. Now, early care, a great deal of it, nursing care, is decreasing mortality, reducing mor- bidity, preventing crippling deformities-yet much remains to be done. The cause must be carefully studied and preventatives found. Fourth, cerebral palsy. I'Iere is a 'virgin field for yeoman work that is being more and more recognized today. Largely a problem of understanding care, careful instruction and patient guidance, it can be much better done by the nurse than the doctor. Some of you may find your goal in this productive field. I could go on down the list ad infinitum, but I have said enough to have you see that nursing is not a static field, that the goal is not yet in sight, that there are never ending possibilities for service. For only in service to others can you 'fully realize your own potentialities. If you have chosen nursing as a means of livelihood only, you have chosen unwisely. In other fields you may perhaps reach greater pecuniary rewards with less physical effort and cer- tainly wi,th legbmental anguish. But, if you have chosen thissfield to justify long hours, hard physical labor, grevious disappointment, at 'times almost com- plete frustration, where can you get better fulfill- ment than the thanks of the distracted parent, the grateful look of the patient to whom you have brought relief or the feeling of membership in the team which has preserved life. May your victories be many, your defeats few, your labors heavy and your pleasures well deserved. May 10, 1952. This was St. Anthony's, all right, but had it ever changed. There was a new addition to the hospital in which five more stories had been added. The Nurses' Home was a completely new building. To think that ten years 'could make such a change. Why, it seems only yesterday, when I start daydreaming about my three years at St. Anthony's and my classmates. We were the mighty 52 ! 52 strong we stood in the year of 1952. But, I must stop this reminiscing and go into the new nurses' home and find out the whereabouts of my class- mates. The escalator took me directly into the reception room where l was met by the housemother, Miss Francis Boudreau. Yes, our little Pinky has fallen right into Mamma Mahin's tootsteps! Aside from doing research work in Dermatology, Pinky manages the 500 student nurses quite well. I almost didn't recognize the quiet, shy, Sister Mary Alicia. Since she has taken over as Director of Student Nurses she has lost that shy nature. She can say quite frankly and with much authority, Y0u're getting entirely too many overnights lately, are you sure you're going home? Poor students-same old line! Downstairs in the linen room was Margaret Allen. She replaced Mrs. Davidson right after graduation. Margaret is doing free private duty nursing in' her spare time. She specials only Orthopedic patients. W'ell, those were the only members of our class in the nurses' home, so I decided to walk over to the hospital to see who was on the nursing staff. Since Sister de Lourdes replaced Sister Agnes, she was absolutely too busy to talk with me. I heard she was investigating the new boiler room. You all remember when the old one blew up back in 1952. Also, maybe you'rI like to know that Sister received the Nobel Prize of 1962 for her new book on Hospital Administration. Grace Kerntke and Beverly Geier are graduates on first floor. They have invented an ingenious type of closed flow irrigation in which the retention catheter drains into a hidden pipe in the floor, which has a gauge that registers output. Those girls were smart, no bottles to empty. Most of you will be glad to hear that jerry Eckroat finally married Bob. After working on One South for the past ten years, she finally earned enough time off. Miss Wolf, even agreed to work extra time in order that jerry and Bob could take a honeymoon. Sister Mary Michael has long since replaced Sister Louise in Pediatrics, and is she ever a peach-Sister M. Michael, I mean. Her two efficient graduates are Marjie West who answers the telephone and Bertha Ann Thesman who accompanies the doctors. Literally speaking, that is. Holding down the fort at night as graduate is none other than Marcheta Teague. Her famous words They couldn't drag me out of here with a team of mules. Replacing Mrs, jones in Central Supply was Martha Shimanek. I do hope Martha will be a little more lenient with the hypo cotton. Peggy Tippit and Barbara Yazzie were second floor graduates, I was told, but they both quit. Peg is kept busy these days trying to be a true, loyal Texan. At the present, she is living in the beautiful Highland Park addition in the great metropolis of Dallas, while Babs has returned to New Mexico, where she is doing nursing on horseback. After assisting with a delivery in a car while she was in training, Louise Pike was encouraged to take up midwifery in the hills of Arkansas. She has been seen riding her donkey from dawn to dusk. But good old Weezie, she has given all this up to take Miss Costello's place in O.B. Nelda Schoonover has replaced the Why don't you graduate Miss Kennedy, while Jodie Brickell is singing lullabies to the babies in the nursery. Up on seventh floor in surgery are Polly Porter and Mary Priess. Being joint editors of the A.j.N. and supervisors in surgery certainly keeps those gals busy. Across the street from the hospital is a beautiful Psychiatric Clinic. Eleanor Lacy, and Mary Morrison have teamed up with a noted Psychiatrist to help those poor unforunate individuals suffering with D.T.'s. Do you suppose that Babe and Lace are experienced enough in such a field? Also in this Clinic in the O.T. department, Mary Louise Abel is doing a wonderful job of rehabilitating the patients. In all her spare time, she is taking shrinking exercises so that she will be able to wear heels with Tom. Was I ever surprised when I read in the New York Times that Elizabeth Ann Linninger was voted Mother of the Year. The birth of her triplets--all boys-must have caught the eye of the judges, for now she and Bill are the proud parents of eleven bouncing boys. By the way, Lynn is the youngest mother ever to receive this National Award. Critics are going wild over the new Kate Smith. Ioan Plisek brought the house down at Carnegie Hall-her very first recital. Good luck, joan. Reminiscing again, I can always remember Mary Deibel being sur- rounded by men. Well, low and behold she is fulfilling her life long ambition by being housemother at the Sigma Chi Fraternity in Norman. The boys just love her. Two of our girls are tied for the Miss World title. The two raving beauties are Betty Ann Townsend and Sue Moinette. The judges can't decide between the brunette or the redhead. ln the meantime Betty Ann and Sue are having the time of their lives waiting for the decision in Paris, France. Also in Europe at Oslo, Switzerland, is Colleen Ryan. Colleen is there for the Olympics. She has been praised by the sportsters as the greatest woman sport since Babe Zaharas. For the third consective year Mrs. Michael jones, the former Ruth Starker, has taken the title of The Best Dressed Woman of the Year, Everyone was so disappointed when Ruthie was unable to go to New York to accept the title, but Ruth smiled her own sweet smile in ex- planation, 'fMike, jr. has the mumps. The Naval Department in Washington, D. C. is mourning the loss of three of their favorite nurses, Kathleen Donovan, Jean Trindle, and Eileen Maher. They are resigning to marry Rear Admirals, but cheer up Navy, there will be plenty of little sailors later on. The State Board Committee has finally discovered the brilliancy of Sister Helena. She is now President, Ah! beware, ye state board appli- cants! Speaking of the Sisters, I passed through Maryville, Missouri last month and stopped at the mother house, where I was greeted at the door by Mother Monica. She is fulfilling the honor with the greatest of dignity and charm, Being her classmate, she personally escorted me about the convent. As we were looking about the kitchen, there sat a little old nun peeling potatoes. Ten years certainly has aged Sister Francis, but they say she is the best potato-peeler this side of Texas. Entertaining at one of her annual Brunches, for the 1962 graduates of St. Anthony's, Lola Mae Tippit couldn't have been more beautiful. She was utterly dripping with diamonds. Speaking of entertaining, Betty Shimanek is having Open House to celebrate the new hospital in Duncan that she and her Doctor hus- band, Frank, will open soon. Seen buzzing about town these days in her custom made, hard top, black, Cadillac convertible is Ann Nix. Between making pictures for M.G.M. studios, and doing Psychiatric Nursing, Ann is kept on the run constantly. Be sure to see her new musical comedy, Giggles Glues. Recruiting student nurses throughout the US. is General Pat Hickey of the U.S.A.F. and Commodore JoAnn Richardson, of the Navy. It was my extreme privilege that they were visiting St. An- thony's at the time I was there, and they enjoyed their visit too, as Tut and Bob were stationed at Tinker Field, As I was relaxing by the swimming pool on the roof of the hospital, CSL Anthony'sj, I noticed in the society column of the Coalgate Times, the approaching marriage of Mary jo Blua on April 2. Could it be that Mary jo misunderstood Leonard when he said 1952, thinking he said 1962-I wonder. . While her husband is working for his Ph. D., Mrs. Bob Short, the former Mary McGinnis is Director of Nurses at Central State Hospital in Norman. She has done wonders with the hospital. Also at Central State is joy Richards. She is supervisor of Geriatrics and doing a swell job, I hear. After being the efficient scrub nurse for Coston and Trent for the past 10 years, Myra Fleming quit to team up with that famous South American' dancer, Carlos DeLouis. They are opening next week at the Copacabana. Orchids to you, Myra. Still following their husbands from camp to camp are Johnnie Karr and Mary Bea Renshaw. They are doing private duty nursing in order to accumulate enough money to make the next trip with their husbands which they think will be to Utopia. Willa Dene Harrison, now Mrs. Gabe Hoye is residing in Canada. They are known as the Black Gold Couple of Canada. Per usual Velma Hollman is bursting with energy. Besides teaching practical nursing to the teen-agers of her home town of Okarche, she has started two wheat farms there. Brownie Hickey has given up her nursing career Csad to sayj to help her husband Cartcher raise cattle on their 1,000-acre ranch near Hennessy, but it has proved profitable, as their Angus bull won top honor at Madison Square Garden. Making National Headlines this week for her successful fete of swimming the English Channel was Evelyn Edwards. When asked for a statement by the press she replied nonchalantly, It was my fluttering eyelids that kept me afloat. Well, that takes in the Mighty 52. As for your author, well, I'm teaching The Art of Gracefulness at Texas LI.
