ANTHONY ' S HIGH SCHOOL BEAUMONT, TEXAS ' II iCCltiOlV We, the Senior Class of 1952 dedicate L ' Antoine, our annual, to all the Priests of our city under the patronage of Our Lady Seat of Wisdom. We want to thank them for working with us and helping us with everything we do. We feel, dear Fathers, that you have played a great part in contributing to the spiritual influences which have been such a prominent part of our Catholic Education. Because of , your assistance, we are asking Our It Lady to guide and to inspire you in all of your work for souls so that her wisdom may direct you to the Eternal Way, Truth and Light, Christ, her Son. O.. X«9 S-i Of ul IKV Or MOr Q At this time of grief and conflict in the world, let us unite ourselves with all the graduates of St. Anthony ' s, in helping to bring peace and happiness to mankind. It is to the graduating classes of St. Anthony ' s that we pay honor on the Jubilee Anni- versary of our first graduation from the new high high school. We know that they have carried the high standards of conduct which they learned here with them in their dealings with the business and social world. As they, some of whom we can proudly congratulate as the parents of students in our own student body, accept this tribute of our L ' Antoine, we urge them to travel back with us o ' er memory ' s lane. We ask them to recall with us the lessons of Faith, Hope, and Charity, and to assist us in help- ing to change the ivorld to one based on the standards and ideals with which St. Anthony ' s has endowed us. For us, this world is a place to know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him, so that we may know the truth and that our VERITAS may make us free. Q ,J ma wth. Although we were separated in classes we were not separated in school spirit. We had very fine officers to lead us and we knew we just couldn ' t go wrong. Officers of room 4 were: President, Vincent Giar- dina; vice-president, Don Russell; secretary. Patsy Phelan; treasurer. Bob Fuller; reporter, Claude Pennell; parliamentarian. Patsy Parma. Officers of room 7 were: President, John Lisotta; vice-president, Helen Durham; secretary, Mary L. Gaudet; treasurer, Sonya Cropper; reporter. Angle Vaglica; and parliamentarian, Carolyn Babin. We were all in the various organizations and really enjoyed ourselves. As Freshmen we were together in everything we did. September 1949 . . . We were Sophomores now and really getting into the swing of things. We didn ' t feel as if we were strangers any- more. We knew practically everyone and everyone knew us. We had more in common with the upper classmen and that made life just dandy. We had girls joining the Glee Club for the first time; namely: Marie Mazzu, Mary Alice Geheb, Patsy Phelan, Betty Dutsch, Joyce Grisaffe, Nita DeFatta, Angle Vaglica, Elida Gonzales, Amada Martinez, Ruby Saldana, Mary J. Enderle, Pauline Gietzen, Joyce Geheb, Kath- erine Dillion, Mary L. Gaudet, and Carolyn Babin. We even had boys making the A team. Wasn ' t that something! It was hard to realize that in September 1950 we were Juniors. Our Freshman and Sophomore years had gone by so quickly that we didn ' t know what was happening. In April we had our Junior Minstrel. l! It went over big, because it was something different. Everyone was in it and everyone had a grand time. At last May came. The month of our Junior-Senior picnic. We had to furnish the food but we didn ' t mind it. In fact, we enjoyed it. 6o -vuc corvinvMC September 1951 found us one step higher on the ladder of success. Believe it or not, we were Seniors. October proved to be a very happy month. Yes, that ' s right, our rings came. November went by too quickly, but the senior girls in the Blue Battalion got long awaited ' ' jackets. The lucky girls were: Gloria Breaux, Carolyn Babin, Amada Martinez, Ruby Saldana, Mary Alice Geheb, Angle Vaglica, Nita De- Fatta, Elida Gonzales, Mary L. Gaudet, Marie Mazzu, and Lilly Belle Bruce. February 7, 1952 was a big day for the Seniors. Yes, the day of the chili supper. Was it a success! Then there was looking forward to the Senior Play and the other big days in May, such as the Junior- Senior picnic. Beginning with our Seniors is Joe Broussard whose mother, Edna Maher, is a former S.A.H.S. student. Patsy Phelan the daughter of Donia Blanchett, Mrs. C. M. Phelan, is preparing to be graduated from the Alma Mater which is claimed by her mother and four of her sisters. Right along with Patsy comes Don Russell whose mother Rose Catherine Hebert is another alumna. Don also has a brother Lew Carey, who graduated from the Class of 48 and two sistrs, Betty Sue, a Junior, and Catherine, a Freshman, Then comes Nita Marie DeFatta whose mother, Mary Battaglia, Mrs. D. DeFatta. is known by all of us. Next is Helen Durham whose parents are Gertrude Hacker and Cecil Durham, old St. Anthony students. Two others are the Gietzens, Pauline and Jean, daughters of Pauline Andrus, ex-student. Along with these. Louis Gallier says. My Dad. Joseph Gallicr. came to school here. Bob Fullers mother, Mabel Padeias, was among our girls too. James, Bonnie and Nettie Sohlinger ' s Dad, Barney Sohlinger, is an old student. Among our Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen are: the Decuir ' s, Cecile and Wilton, whose mother, Elizabeth Stansbury remembers when she was one of St. .Anthony ' s group; the Phelans, Margaret, Mary Ellen and Coleen who knew that daddy, Anthony M. Phelan, is also an alumnus of their school. Patsy and Johnny Phelan, cousins of those, share the same honor, for daddy. J. H. Phelan, Jr., went to St. Anthony s too. Looking around a little more, Rose Catherine and Helen Wilson and Dot Le Maire proudly tell that their mothers, the McDaniel sisters, are still coming to St. Anthony ' s. And the same is true of Theresa Leggett whose mother, Jeanette Solomon, still knows her way to our school. Ed Green belongs here too, for daddy, Ed Green, is another alumnus. Tommy Reed claims: mother, Margaret Phelan, sister, Mary Reed, and brother Ranny as his representatives. Ralph Snover, son of Leah Davis, is another member of the album who with Tommy Turner, son of Lillian Brou.ssard, says that the Sophs have their share too, because they can also add Elizabeth Todd, daughter of Virginia Barry; Joe Hebert, son of Anna Lee Woodfin; Frances and Linda Wood, daughters of Alice Boudreau. Of course, the Freshmen are last, but not least, for aside from some little sisters and brothers previously mentioned, Janet White, Rita Krepper and Maureen Toome y also have claims for Mrs. White, Dorothy Rossen; Mr. Toomey and Mrs. Krepper, Doris Toomey are ' exes. We have Walter Nebgen, son of Walter Nebgen, Sr. ; Mildred Douglas, daughter of Mildrd Pontiff; Bonnie Thompson, daughter of Catherine Leicht; David Browning, son of Ena Folse; Margaret Boykin, daughter of the late Burrell Boykin; Jo Ann Bares, daughter of Gladys Bellar: Mary LeBlanc, daughter of Clarence LeBlanc and Jack Dinkins, son of Martha Kohler. The first quarter was all St. Anthony as they shook Lisotta loose on a 42-yard jaunt through half the Vidor team. They threatened several other times but were held by a stout Vidor line. The Saint dominated throughout the game but had a scare when Lansford of the Bucs ran 47 yards before being hauled down by Vincent Giardina. Norman Walker and Lisotta led the backfield while Jerry Sachitano, Fred Perlitz and Fontenot led the line. 4 Bulldogs Tie Lions 7-7 The St. Anthony Bulldogs batted a determined bunch of Livingston Lions to a 7-7 standoff at the Lions ' home field. Although the Saints held a great edge in statistics they were unable to cash in when it counted. The Saints scored first in the second quarter on a 48-yard pass from Sopho- more Andy Wenner to Andrew Boud- roau who caught it on the Lions ' teri imd rambled over. Julian Gonzales ' conversion was good and it was 7-0. At the halftime, the Saints ' superi- ority spoke for itself as Livingston never penetrated beyond its 38. The second half was a different story, however, as the Lions unleashed a passing attack and drove 47 yards with Bobby Fair scoring from the one. Rowe kicked the tying point. The Saints threatened again m the last quarter when they marched to the Lions ' 18, but a pass interception put out the fire. Harry Fontenot, with his collegiate type linebacking, was the star in the Saint line while Boud- reau averaged well over 40 yards with his punts. Paul Prejean paced th. Bulldog backfi.ld with his elusive run- ning. mam ■ ' ■W .::m:mf, i: ' m ftf.MirjfA ' i M- ;j ' . •ir 4J ' - - ' ..lie ' vv: V St. Anthony — Byrne 13 The St. Anthony Bulldogs were de- . feated by a big, fast Shamrock team . - to the tune of 13-0. The Bulldogs got W % off to a fast start after recovering a Byrne fumble. A Fiorenza-Giardina pass carried down to the Shamrock ' s 9, but then they were held. The Saints continued outplaying Byrne until the last minute of the second quarter when Ledet took a handoff and ran 67 yards for a score. The try for the extra point was no good. After the intermission the Bulldogs threw caution to the winds and passed on nearly every play, 21 in all but they couldn ' t match the to Ledet. Herret connected. FRENCH by Hadley Melo An underdog St. Anthony Bulldog team played inspired ball and almost pulled the upset of the year as they were edged out by a powerful French team 27-20. Even in defeat the Bull- dogs showed fight that they have sorely missed in previous seasons. Here is a summary: The game started with St. Anthony kicking off to French. On the second play. Buff ' s Star, Don Sanford rambled 79 yards for a touchdown. This lead was shortlived and the Saints scored after recovering a fumbled punt on the French 13. John Lisotta scored on a 13-yard run off tackle. He then ran over for the extra point. Lisotta passed 35 yards to Leonard Tremont for an- other score as the quarter ended. They threatened to turn the game into a riot. The Saints scored again with Li- sotta going over from the one yard. Following the intermission French marched down to the Saints ' one, where the Bulldogs held them. But then fate took a hand and Jack Tucker recovered Fiorenza ' s fumble and zoomed for a touchdown. Minutes later Landry passed to Surles for another Buff score. French made the clincher when Jenkins smashed from the one with 45 seconds remaining. The outstanding stars for the Saints were: Line — Tremont, Tanner, Trahan, Fontenot. Back — Lisotta, Walker. Altogether the whole line played well. W ' St. Anthony Defeats St. Edwards of Austin The Bulldogs ended the 1951 season with a decisive 33-19 win over their up-state rivals from Austin. In the first quarter the favorite Bull- dogs, with a team comprised of sub- stitutes and Seniors who hadn ' t seen much action, were trailing 0-13. Joe Molina scored once and passed 50 yards to Pancho Rayes for the other tally. The second period was a rude re- verse of the first as the Bulldog first team entered the game and exploded for 26 points. Lisotta scored three times and Wenner added a fourth. St. Edwards took the second half kickoff and drove 50 yards for a score l)ut the Bulldogs came back with a s( ore of their own with Lisotta going over for the fourth time. Gonzales kicked his third extra point to make it 5 5-19, and end the scoring. John Lisotta was the standout for till- Bulldogs with his bull-like charges III got valuable assistance from backs Andrew Wenner, Paul Prejean, and linemen Tanner, Fontenot and Lovoi. The game was far more one-sided than the score indicated as Coach Frankovic emptied his bench in an effort to hold the score down. Here is the play by play. The Saints took the opening kickoff and Lisotta raced to the S. A. 41, but the Saints were held, and punted to the Silsbee ' s 25 where Kenneth Barland fumbled and Trahan recovered for the Bulldogs. They scored seven plays later with Lisotta going over from the eight. Gon- zales converted to make it 7-0. Late in the first quarter a Fiorenza-Tremont pass gained 43 yards to the Bengal 17. At this point Andrew Wenner entered the game and scooted 17 yards for a score, eluding three Tigers in the process. Gonzales converted and it was 14-0 in favor of the Bulldogs at the half. After the colorful halftime festivities, the second half proved to be a repeti- tion of the first. The Silsbee fans had something to cheer about when Barland punted out-of- bounds on the S. A. one, but the cheers turned to groans as Fiorenza threw a ■ screen pass to Wenner who ran 98 yards all over Purple Stadium before being tackled on the Silsbee 1. The next play he scored and Gonzales kicked to make it 21-0. On the first play of the 4th quarter tragedy struck the Bulldogs as Fiorenza, harassed by the Tiger line, threw badly to his right and Elmore of Silsbee inter- cepted and ran 79 yards before Revere knocked him out of bounds on the one. Two plays later Barland scored and Million converted to make it 21-7. Five plays after the kickoff the Saints scored again with Lisotta going over from the 19. On this play Lisotta was never headed at he ran over Silsbee ' s defenders like paper bags. Gonzales once more converted to make it 28-7. The Tigers scored again against inexperiencd Bulldog reserves on the passing of Barland, who hit Elmore with a 24-yard pass to end the scoring for the night. Malain blocked the P. A. T. Outstanding for the Bulldogs were: James Tynan and Joe Lavoi, a couple of reserve guards, who literally tore the Silsbee line apart, as well as Savoy, Boudreau, and Tremont who also played well. John Lisotta and Andrew Wenner were outstanding in the backfield.
