Zke Senior Class of 1963 Presents Zke Siquaeris i Business Managers John Tulko Paul Yarnot Dedication We, the class of 1963, wish to dedicate our yearbook to one dedicated to helping others. A man of varied interests, Fr. Emil Rakowski, O.F.M., will be remembered as one who strived for perfection and sought perfection in us; who was strict yet overwhelmingly popular; who was serious yet possessed a subtle sense of humor; and whose very name has been synonymous with athletics and fine sportsmanship. That we have become more physically, mentally and morally fit to live a purposeful life is a fact for which we owe no small amount of credit to Fr. Emil. 2 foreword SIQUAHRIS, the initial word of the hymn to St. Anthony, mean- ing If thou seekest,” expresses best our way of life at Padua. It is extremely important in this age of ballistic missiles, sputniks, and nu- clear physics that we keep in sight the Principle of life which is God. He is the center of life at Padua, and therefore we strive for Him in everything that we do. It is our intention to show you this continual progress, as we view season after season. The climactic moment of graduation brings us in full circumspect of one who has reached the peak of four years of training that has made him fully aware of his purpose on earth, and that has shown him the way to perfection. If the Paduan but learns to live with this concept in mind, Padua has succeeded, for in the words of Goethe, It is not where we stand that matters ... but where we are going.” ACTIVITIES—90 Zable of ADMINISTRATION—6 WINTER—50 10—AUTUMN 68—SPRING Our Mis hops His Excellency, Lawrence B. Roland Jaskulski, O.F.M. Autumn means activity to the Paduan. For the underclass- man this is a period of exploration and vitality; for the upper- classman an opportunity for serious undertakings and responsi- bilities. The fall day may witness a soccer game, a track meet, or find laughing boys picking apples in the orchard, and later see those rejuvenated students in a profound atmosphere of learning. Autumn is a time when rakes replace lawnmowers, red cheeks replace tanned ones, when the cooled ground crunches on the fallen russet leaves, and when the lowering night reveals stars twinkling serenely. How we treasure the clear brisk day that smiles on a golden land of happy moments and the windy night that stores its memories in the vault of a Halloween moon! 10 Mtumn Our Vocational Director, Fr. This year Fr. Emil is coaching the J.V.’s, and a new-comer to Padua’s cam- pus, Mr. Dick O’Neil, is coaching the varsity. Kvedrovicz tries to put one in orbit. Springer makes a jump shot. Szypula and Butka put some spirit into practice. Winter means many things to the Paduan. After a try- ing day of concentrated studying, he looks forward to an hour or two of basketball, ice skating, sledding or skiing. Later on, the gym is alive with the din of cheers at the basketball game, while outside the cold night covers the earth. It is the season when carols and bells, evergreens and colored lights herald the coming of the Infant born in a star-thatched manger. In these months of snow and hissing radiators, of hot chocolate and oatmeal, we Paduans pray, study, and play with all our strength, through days of trial and days that make us glad to be alive. This continual striving realizes progress, for this is truly a time of accomplishment. 50 In the cold stillness of the night, the illuminated manger on the front lawn evokes both a natural feeling of peace and beauty and a supernatural assurance of our Emmanuel, God with us. Christmas Janowski, Brother Vincent, and Breh decorate the Christmas tree in the lobby. Delivering his Christmas message, Fr. Antonine speaks about the perennial spirit of Christmas that should be in our hearts. During the Christmas party Susi receives a present from Santa via Fr. Brendan. While daisies are dotting the verdant grass, the school, too, becomes alive like the fresh green leaves on the trees. Everyone is busy taking out baseballs and bats, removing storm windows, hiking, getting ready for Mother's Day or the school picnic or merely enjoying a walk in the sweet air of spring. For the seniors these are memorable weeks indeed, be- cause they are concluding four years that have prepared them to live a happy, purposeful life. Soon after their class trip, the moment of graduation emphatically realizes the trans- formation of boyhood and learning into manhood and decision. 68 Mother's Day Weekend Months of preparation are spent for the chief social event of the year. People having arrived from all over, from West Virginia to Massachusetts and from Brooklyn to Buffalo, the program commences on Saturday morning with some music produced by the band and pianists. In the afternoon the gym team performs its routines, and in the evening a play entertains the visitors. Beautiful religious ceremonies highlight the weekend with a high Mass followed by a procession and crowning of the Blessed Virgin. Later a banquet concludes the merry weekend of festivities. Patro Hz St. $okn Posco Motto-. Smbior Colors.• Red and White Slower: Carnation WE THE SENIORS OF 1963 have spent four autumns, winters, and springs at Padua studying, working, practicing, playing, and praying. Now we have come to our graduation, the time when our accomplish- ments are brought into retrospection. However, the outstanding events should not only be recalled, but more than this, that singular feeling of steady growth in studies, in character, in sports, and in prayer, which will sustain us throughout our entire lives. With this in mind, can we ever forget this moment that brings to a climax the most memorable years of our lives? Rector s Messape My dear Graduates, The diploma you have received is ample proof that you have passed successfully another rung on your ladder of life. Let us be the first to CON- GRATULATE you on your step forward towards your goal in life. We—the Fathers and Brothers here at St. Anthony of Padua School—are very happy that we had been able not only to help you ACADEMICALLY but also to guide you SPIRITUALLY. As you will continue to climb higher and higher on your ladder of life towards your goal, we do hope and pray that you will put to good use all that you have learned with us and from us. Make us as proud of you in your later years as we are of you today. May the good Lord always be with you. Sincerely in Christ, FAREWELL—a sad word, yet, in this instance, not unmixed with joy, for we bid you goodbye with the knowledge that this is not an ending, but a be- ginning. It marks the start of the final stage of your journey to God, your Christian adult life. Your success on this journey will be our success; your sorrows and failures, ours, too. Our prayers are not that these sorrows or failures be absent from your lives, but that you should have the courage to bear them with Christian patience. Our prayers are not that you should experience mere material success, but that success which lasts forever. Only then can we say that our labors have not been in vain. Signs of this success have been evident in each one of you—we thank God and you for it. Now it remains that the fulness of this success meet each one of you as you set out on your journey. As you strive to that fulness, please remember us and our poor efforts on your behalf. Thank you for your patience, your willingness, your eagerness, your true Christian gentlemanliness. We will long remember you. Go with God, in peace, with courage. rt Dutiful... Big Mike.” Activities: soccer III . . . PADUAN staff . . . gym staff. Ambition: personnel administrator. Music, dramatics, gymnastics, tournaments, clubs, staffs, movies and hobbies give him a superb extra- curricular education for pleasure and profit: the pleasure of doing something he enjoys, and the profit of being a man of broadened interests. This diversified range of activities is one of the reasons for which we appreciate Padua. 90 Curriculum Fr. Bertrand dictates English grammar rules to the sophs. SENIORS Latin Physics English Lit. Cibrary Staff Carlyle once said, 'The true university of these days is a collection of books.” Our library is a necessity to Padua. It has books for everyone: reference books, fiction, technical, religious and vocation books, and to keep us up to date on current events it has magazines and newspapers. This is our Fort Knox of Knowledge. Father Cajetan does the classifying, accessioning, typing and stylusing. The processing department as pictured also demands a great deal of atten- tion. Fr. Austin’s duties are ordering books and taking care of the back room files and all correspondence. Here Father explains some technical work to Thomas Janowski. An important task in the upkeep of the library is the circulation of books, which George Lowry (left) does. Ed Walczak (right) sees to it that each book is returned and he maintains order in the library. Ted Nalaskowski, Joseph Bialoncik, and Joseph Golas have charge of the desk and records of books taken out. They also take care of deco- rating the display shelves. Brendan’s accomplishments. During the four years Fr. Brendan has been with us, the band was formed, instruments purchased, and recitals were held only after many hours of hard work by both Father and the band. Father also supervises the orchestra, directs the chorus, and teaches piano and organ. He is credited with the composition of the music and lyrics of our school song, Padua High. We have been given a great gift, the appreciation of music, through the efforts and achievements of Fr. Brendan. 7r. ftrendan, O. Through reading our education is made complete. We learn to think, speak and write better, in imagination travel to foreign lands, meet spectacular people, and experience their joys and sorrows. In order to encourage us to read, Fr. Austin has organized the Book Club, one of the infant clubs of Padua. Father gives a summary of each newly-purchased book, including everything from the South Seas to the Abominable Snowman. Then at the following meeting each member gives a report on his book. In such a way exper- iences in reading are passed on to others and pleasures of reading are shared.
