'I he aim of St. Anthony’s is to prepare worthy, in- telligent, and upright young men called to serve in God’s vineyard for spiritual leadership in the religious and secular priesthood. St. Anthony’s also offers an oppor- tunity for other young men called to the various pro- fessions of life to acquire the necessary knowledge and education for a selected profession. This all-embracing objective is achieved through a carefully planned program of religious, intellectual, so- cial, and physical activities—a program of education designed to develop a Catholic character in the leaders of tomorrow. Proud of our school and grateful for the training re- ceived, we present this book to the reader for his appreciation. FR. TIMOTHY PAWLAK, O.F.M. Guardian VERY REV. THEOPHANE KALINOWSKI. O.F.M. Min. Ill Mr. Joseph Lomak Physical Education Brother Casimir Our The task of the Faculty was immeasurably aided outside the classroom by the Franciscan Brothers. In the kitchen, bakery, infirmary, laundry room, boiler house, and wherever our need or comfort or their duty placed them, these Friars set us an example of our ideals in action. Their lives best illustrated, in a never-to-be- forgotten manner, the lesson of the true value of things material and immaterial. Brother Benedict Brother Alphonse Brother Timothy There was something encouraging and impressive about these Brothers as they cheerfully performed their endless and seemingly monotonous tasks. It was this, no doubt, which proved to our youthful mijids that the ideals we were taught harmonized with reality. Hero worship is a natural phenomenon of youth. Could we have chosen better human heroes to wor- ship than these Franciscan Brothers? Brother Marius Brother Valerian WlU WEST Cm President JOHN JOSEPH SOWA “Literary” Johnnie . . . Martin Kropidlowski, O.F.M., this year’s retreat master, speaks to the Paduans at one of the many very helpful spiritual conferences. In the beginning of every school year the student body of St. Anthony’s looks forward to the first event on the calendar, the annual retreat. Fr. Martin Kropidlowski, O.F.M., opened the retreat on September 21, with the pur- pose of giving the Paduans a good and healthy spiritual outlook at the year ahead. Despite its brevity, this one and a half day of silence gave the students the chance to speak to Christ and make resolutions to better themselves for the future. After the lengthy summer vacation of lei- sure and spiritual laxity, this retreat greatly aided the Paduans in finding and correcting their faults. 36 Sewen a tct Malkiewicz and Flis, morning chanters. Roland Jaskul- ski, O.F.M., has become an organization to which the entire student body belongs and especially cherishes. The particular aim of the Sodality is to build up and renew the whole inner man by means of true veneration of the Blessed Vir- gin in order to render him capable of, and zealous for all works of spiritual love and charity. Using this as a guide, Fr. Roland encouraged the boys to a greater devotion to our Heavenly Mother. The main undertaking accomplished by the Sodality was the May Day exercise on Moth- er’s Day. A procession of the entire student body commenced the activities and was fol- lowed by the crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary by Thomas Janidlo, president of the Sodality. Sodality officers Joseph Czermak, Thomas Janidlo, and Joseph Beseda. Thomas Janidlo, Fr. Dominic, and Thomas Walczak. 7 W Orden, Third Order novices. Fr. Dominic Turajski. O.F.M., mod- erator of the Third Order, has often stressed the purpose and privileges of being a member of this Order. St. Francis established the Third Order as a layman’s order for those who had contemplated his way of life but were held back by one thing or another. The Third Order has in- creased in enrollment and has spread throughout the world. On October 3, the eve of the feast of St. Francis, nineteen new novices were accepted into the Order. On October 4, the twenty who had completed their novi- tiate the previous year became pro- fessed. During the regular monthly meet- ings Fr. Dominic explained the rule of the Order and its purposes. He stressed the importance of being mod- els of St. Francis and of making their everyday life pleasing to God. A strong Christian character, as well as a close following of the rule of St. Francis, was maintained and practiced by the members of the Third Order. 39 TlaUotuzl 'ftyotuyi Soccety FRONT ROW, seated: S. Having been firmly planted in the school curriculum the previous year, the Padua Chapter of the National Honor Society again began its functions for the 1959-1060 scholastic year. Reverend Bertrand Bluma, O.F.M.. remained the society’s advisor. Joseph Flis, elected to the presidency for his second term, was ably assisted by his cabinet of officers: Stanley Zagraniczny, vice-president; John Sowa, secretary; and Thomas Walczak, treasurer. Once again the new probationary members were scrupulously selected by the vote of the faculty. The requirements for membership remained unchanged: strong character, high scholastic ability, natural leadership, and devoted service. A member inducted into the National Honor Society must endeavor to serve as a second teacher both spiritually and intellectually—spiritually by a fine Christian example and in- tellectually by offering scholastic aid to other students who do not possess such talents as he does. The main objective of the National Honor Society is the molding of the young high school adolescent into an upright Catholic man. Stqccaenc Staff Fr. Once again the talented thespians of Padua brought forth their acting abilities to present a fine and frolick- ing production. Under the direction of Fr. Eric Skalski, O.F.M., they opened the dramatic season with a variety show. Main features of the show were a satire on a few current TV fads and a fashion parade. The skits were written by the students who participat- ed. From two weeks’ rehearsal, with various last minute changes and hectic confusion, emerged a hilarious and successful show. Students from all classes performed with great enthusiasm and enjoyment. A Senior committee consisting of Thomas Wojsla- wowicz, Stanley Grysko, Leonard Kuminski, Ted O’Karma, and Richard Gill aided Fr. Eric and the boys by polishing the skits, obtaining ideas, and preparing the show. Staging and lighting were under the direction of the Juniors, headed by' Louis Zglobicki. B. Martin and Mihalik. Although their record of three wins, five losses, and one tie does not indicate a great deal of success, the Cascaders can be proud that they played only highly rated teams. Fr. Emil’s returning veterans provided the team with the needed experience, though we cannot forget to mention the fine efforts of the underclassmen, and made this season a very exciting one. The opening game of the season proved to be a thriller, as the Cascaders downed Ham- mondsport 2-0. The finest game was played against the always tough Campbell team. The fine offensive and defensive tactics used by the Cas- caders terminated into an impressive 4-0 victory. The lone tie occurred at the climax of the season against Lakemont. We can be proud of their enthusiasm and de- termination to play and win. 52 FRONT ROW: E. Pembleton; W. Snopek; S. Zagraniczny; J. Szczepaniak; V. Bckicmpis; T. Clouser; J. Bellinger. BACK ROW: . Ten of the varsity players chose teams from the stu- dent body. These ten teams were then split into two leagues, A and B. After a prelim- inary round the teams were rearranged into the two leagues according to their “wins’ average” to balance the competition. This adjustment was also made after the second round. A third and final round was played for the individual league crowns. The soccer season afforded enjoyment, excitement, and exercise for all. 4’’ ?e zyue Clouser ................ .725 Joswick ................. .625 Zembrzuski .............. .375 Bahara _____________________ 375 Pazych ......................250 56 Gill kicks the ball as O’Karma avoids a collision. A rain-drenched athletic field was the arena for the big play-off game between Sowa’s team, champs of B league, and Clouser’s team, victors of A league. The slippery field, however, did not dampen the players’ spirits nor did it hamper the game. It was an action- packed half hour battle between two evenly matched teams contending for the coveted trophy. The slow moving first half remained scoreless. Pandemonium broke loose in the second half. It seemed that Clouser’s high spirited eleven would take the upper hand, but all of their many goal attempts termi- nated in failure. A penalty kick by Louis Zglobicki early in the second half was the only scoring of the game. Thus, Sowa clinched the title 1-0. Uss grimaces as the ball comes at him. Look Ma, I’m swimming. The Seniors scored an easy 8-0 victory over an unexperienced hut tough Freshman team. Although their team lost, the “Frosh” showed fine spirit, determination and good sportsmanship. The second game pitted the Juniors against the Sophomores. At the start the Juniors played a tight defensive game matching point for point, before breaking loose to win 6-3. The next two games saw good offensive playing. The “Sophs” handed the Freshmen their third defeat by the score of 8-4. Tables were turned, however, when they lost to the Seniors 6-0. The last game between the Juniors and Seniors proved to be the best game of soccer class competition. Holding a 2-0 lead for three quarters, the lower classmen displayed fine defensive and offensive playing. A penalty kick scored for the Seniors proved to be the spark that set the forest afire as they booted in two goals to win 5-2. Class participation, good sportsmanship, and the spirit displayed will always be re- membered in these games. ROBERT BAHARA co-captain JOHN SOWA Padua Padua Padua Padua Padua Padua MR. Much was expected of the returning squad, since most of the boys were veterans of last year’s team. Well-balanced height, advantageous use of the fast break, and accurate shooting sup- plemented the varsity five in compiling this winning record. This year we are proud to mention that Jack Marcheski, pictured at the left dunking the ball, broke Ed Opiola’s 1955 individual scoring mark of 34 points by sinking 35 dur- ing the last regular season game against Horseheads. Emil’s fine coaching and discipline, Padua’s “Little Five” ended with a winning record of 11 and 5. The team was constantly shuffled due to injuries and mishaps; but, nevertheless, Fr. Emil always came up with a versatile, hard-hitting com- bination. Out of a few good players he produced one great team which was difficult to match. Towards the middle of the season a few Juniors were added, and the J.V.s sparked a new winning streak. With this extra power they were even more unyielding. In all of their games the team showed splendid ball handling, accurate shooting, and many other virtues possessed by an excellent squad. With this, and the cheering support of the school, they wTent on to make one of Padua’s best J.V. records. Fr. Here, as in the past, members of the Varsity and Junior Varsity picked their own teams and acted as coaches. The teams were catagorized accord- ing to individual ability in order to provide a more even level of com- petition in each league. After Christmas recess the teams were rechosen so that the coaches might try to improve their teams. A total of 135 students partici- pated. Heated races developed in all the leagues and none of the cham- pions were decided until the final games. Emil, O.F.M., organized the new popular gymnastic team. Under his com- petent supervision this team has grown each year in precision and esteem. On January 25 of this year the patience, perseverance, and hard work of the twenty-four boys com- prising the gym team paid off. They were invited to give an exhibition of their skill at the New York State Physical Education Teachers’ Convention in Buffalo, New York. The reaction of the 900 coaches who wit- nessed this exhibition of skill, grace, and en- durance was tremendous. Fr. Emil and the boys received many words of congratulation after the performance. This gym team has also performed at local schools with the same response as at Buffalo. Parzych does his routine. Students from all four grades compose the team. They devote an hour and a half each day for vigorous and often grueling practice. Health, strength and coordination are the benefits from this exercise. Besides benefit- ing physically, each gymnast may gain a trophy for himself if he is qualified to per- form various feats on the different apparatus. These trophies are presented to the boys by Fr. Emil at the Achievement Night banquet towards the end of the school year. Joswick vaults over the box. 74 Gerald Giemza does his routine on the parallel bars and the rest of the team stands at ease and observes. throve'' eaps atn°l the sPiea' .d oi leUo «“ over e «ers- • k “law 0 aC 75 Gym team remains at attention while A. Snopek performs. October 31 again provided the setting for the annual Halloween marathon. Because of overcast and rainy weather, the marathon was held in the gym. This inclement weather, however, did not dampen the spirits of the excited participants. Scream- ing voices told of the hopefulness of the Freshmen, the defiance of the Sophomores, the determination of the Juniors, and the confidence of the Seniors. The entire competition consisted of novelty races like the one-legged relay, the wheelbarrow' race, the kangaroo relay, the weave-and-crawl under, and the dizzy izzy. Leonard Szot weaves through the legs of his classmates. Actually the marathon brings to the fore two separate rivalries. The Seniors and Juniors compete for first place, while the Sophomores strug- gle to keep the Freshmen from scor- ing any points. Regarding the first rivalry, the Seniors emerged victori- ous over the Juniors by a wide mar- gin. Surprisingly enough this year’s Freshman class edged past the Sopho- mores. The day’s activities were climaxed by a cross-country race through the hills. Seniors hustle during marathon victory. 78 Sophomores keep in step. The entire student body enjoys the fun of the marathon races. Exhausted Johnny Sowa beams a smile toward the camera after winning the mile and a quarter cross-country race. This course is an uphill run most of the way. Johnnie displayed his speed and endurance in conquer- ing this course and has won for himself a beautiful trophy. Bob Bahara does a leap frog over Gill. Which way are we going? The 1960 tournaments began with greater interest and enthusiastic riv- alry, because nearly all of last year’s winners were returning. They were ready to capture another trophy and to meet every challenger. As the tournaments got under way, the sport prophets made these pre- dictions: Ted O’Karma, last year’s ping- pong champion, is expected to retain his title, although he will have to face some top competition from Joe Pomaski and Denis McCarthy. Anthony Zembrzuski will again meet Joe Flis, whom he just edged out last year for the foul-shooting trophy. The pool championship will prob- ably be won by Joe Pomaski or John Sowa. The shuffle-board champs, Zem- brzuski and Bahara, will eliminate some top teams to maintain their championship. Although these predictions are re- liable, they are fallible. Warming up with calisthenics. Jump-stick relay. 'P6ef6tc li SeCucatt t An extended schedule of tumbling highlighted the formal physical education classes and gave the Padua students a well rounded program. In addition to the regular classes of calisthenics, the courses featured unfamiliar but interesting games. Physical education was again placed in the qualified hands of Mr. Joseph Lemak, assisted in the instruction of gymnastics by Fr. Emil. Interest in gymnastics was stimulated through the success attained by the Padua gymnastic team. The new exercises provided many thrills and chills, especially on the trampoline and the parallel bars, which the boys unhesitantly encountered after conquering their fear of the awesome-looking apparatus. This year the courses likewise featured instructions in theory on the more familiar sports of soccer, football, basketball, and baseball. Physical Education instructor Mr. Joseph Lemak conducts a class. Fairlie and Asiello. The athletic staff has once again done a com- mendable job in maintaining the gymnasium, the basketball court, and the athletic field. The staff consisted of: Seniors—Stanley Grysko and Albert Snopek; Juniors—Michael Bogusky and Peter Teutschman; Sophomore—Joseph Lubonski; Fresh- men—Michael Asiello and Michael Fairlie. In addition to their chores in the gym, the mem- bers found time to act as managers for both Varsity and Junior Varsity sports and to conduct Padua’s intramural program. During the entire year the athletic staff conscien- tiously cared for the athletic equipment and facilities of the gym proper. zdte4 4uxt£ta'ue6 BROOKLYN AUXILIARY Mrs. C.
