1- my Through the passage of time, the original number of the class of 1957 decreased from fifty-seven in the freshman year, to twenty-one as Seniors. Time, and the prefer- ence at Padua for quality, rather than quantity, brought about this rather large de- crease. Of this small group of twenty-one, however, ten are considering the priesthood, and at least eight have serious intentions of entering college with careers in journalism, engineering, law, and medicine in mind. ln September, 1953, Father Humphrey Tobias, 0.l7.lVl., assumed the duties of ad- viser for the new Freshman class. lfnder his guidance and advice, St. Paschal Baylon was chosen as the class patron. Gold and white were decided upon as the class colors, while the red carnation became the class flower. Nihil Prater Jesum Desideramusw, i.e. Nothing But Jesus Do We Desiref' was chosen as the class motto. Father Humphrey continued to guide the class for three years and part of the fourth, until he left Padua to undertake duties as a missionary in the Philippine ls- lands. Upon his departure, l'l2lll16I' Christopher Konkol, 0.l7.lVl., acted as adviser for the remainder of the Senior year. It was during this ten-month period that they re- alized the duties expected of those entering adulthood. They experienced the burden of responsibilities, and began to learn the value of dependability. They became aware of the necessity of striving for success in life, both in the physical and spiritual world. Alter four years as adolescents, they readied themselves to face the world as adults.
