The Class of 1957. re- alising that the title of this book symbolizes manls perpetual quest for happiness. centered its theme about the Holy Eucharist. It was all the more appro- priate, since their class patron. St. Paschal Baylon. was chosen by the Church to be the patron of the Holy Eucharist. The theme is developed by comparing the altar to Calvary, which necessarily hail to precede the Resurrection. The ultimate goal of every individual is salvation. It is our hope, then. that this book shall remind all who open up its pages of their final destiny. l... i.z'o '. -I ,' '52-1:5-.-... As we regard the altars in our churches and chapels, we notice that the altar is elevated, as if on a hill. For all Christians, there is but one holy hill, the hill that overshadows all other mountains ancl hills-V-the hill of Calvary. A stuclenfs life is always an uphill climb. It seems that he is always working up from below. In lruth, he is climbing a hill with crosses to bear and obstacles in the way. His one inspira- fion should be llle Way of the Cross 10 Ihe summit of Calvary. 'IFN-Pin ,gununu VERY REV. rl'm:fwANr: KALINOWSKI U F M sw' Iilcv. ,IMH-is E. KIQAHNE , . . Time, and the prefer- ence at Padua for quality, rather than quantity, brought about this rather large de- crease. Of this small group of twenty-one, however, ten are considering the priesthood, and at least eight have serious intentions of entering college with careers in journalism, engineering, law, and medicine in mind. ln September, 1953, Father Humphrey Tobias, 0.l7.lVl., assumed the duties of ad- viser for the new Freshman class. lfnder his guidance and advice, St. Paschal Baylon was chosen as the class patron. Gold and white were decided upon as the class colors, while the red carnation became the class flower. Nihil Prater Jesum Desideramusw, i.e. Nothing But Jesus Do We Desiref' was chosen as the class motto. Father Humphrey continued to guide the class for three years and part of the fourth, until he left Padua to undertake duties as a missionary in the Philippine ls- lands. Upon his departure, l'l2lll16I' Christopher Konkol, 0.l7.lVl., acted as adviser for the remainder of the Senior year. It was during this ten-month period that they re- alized the duties expected of those entering adulthood. They experienced the burden of responsibilities, and began to learn the value of dependability. They became aware of the necessity of striving for success in life, both in the physical and spiritual world. Alter four years as adolescents, they readied themselves to face the world as adults. --hw?? On October 3, those desiring to follow the rule of the Third Order were accepted into the novitiate, while last yearis novices made their profession on St. Francis, Day, October 4. After these special days, the society, as a group. then organized to carry out one of its more special projects in aiding the missions. They accomplished this in three ways: by sending clothes to the Philippines, hy giving financial help to the missions, and by offering their prayers and good works in the form of spiritual bouquets. In order to spread the mission spirit throughout the school, the fraternity staged a play, Wlihe Demon Preacherf, A great deal of work went into the production. The group not only spent many hours rehearsing, hut also designed their costumes and made their own props. r. lxlilVllill'il instructs ollicers Stachexsivz. George, another former teacher at Padua, to help with work in the Philippine mis- sion fields. Father lflavian served only one year as an instructor, teaching Algebra and Latin. lfather Humphrey, besides teaching English, served in the capacity of the school Bursar for a number of years. l7r. Humphrey continued leaching until his departure became imminent in November of this school year. The James Franzese Memorial Banquet was held lor their benefit on December 22nd. Because they were called sooner than expected, the banquet was held with the two guests of honor being absent. The banquet was substantially a success, and a gift of nearly a thousand dollars was forwarded them to help out in their missionary endeavors. Farewell ceremonies lor Fr. This was an especially creditable performance, since they were faced with a very difficult schedule. With several men returning from last year's squad, the team, captained by Joe Barstys and Ron Zgodzinski, earned their victories by strong defensive play and a fast, short passing attack. The team also had the depth they were lacking in previous seasons. The Padua eleven scored a very impressive triumph when it upset a previously unbeaten Nunda team. It also held unbeaten Campbell to two scoreless ties but dropped decisions to Wayland and Nunda, both powerhouses of this area. At the very outset, Father Roland stressed the idea that membership in the Sodality should be voluntary and sincere. nGoing along with the crowd , he pointed out. should not he anyoneis reason for entering. One of the primary reasons for the existence of the Sodality in the School is to prepare youths who are not contemplating the religious life. for the lay apostolate. The Sodality aims at developing Christian hahits of thinking and acting. The Sodalists are interested in being ahle to form Christian public opinion and Christian patterns of daily living. The high point of the Sodalityls activities was the May crowning. This special de- votion honoring: Mary as Queen has lmeen a traditional Sodality function, not only at Padua. hut in all Sodalities throughout the world. Sodzllists recite the rosary Retreats lfr. Andrew 1-ondum-ting the first rf-treat of the school year As in the past, two retreats were conducted for the students this year. The first was held at the very beginning of the school year, the second was held at the comple- tion of the first semester. Father Andrew Meronek, O.F.lVl., Padua's new vocational director, conducted the first retreat at the beginning of the school year. Not yet acquainted with any of the students, Father Andrew made a very favorable first impression by his thought-pro- voking conferences. Using a novel approach to such topics, as spirituality and voca- tions, he aroused the Paduans' interest and held it for the entirety of the retreat. The mid-year retreat was conducted by Fr. Victor Krzywonos, O.F.lVl. Because of a conflicting schedule. Fr. Victor's services were limited to one day. Nevertheless, the students were able to benefit spiritually from the several conferences presented that day. The second retreat was followed by the Thirteen l-lours, Devotion. This devotion closed with an evening Mass and procession. lt marked for the first time that an eve- ning Mass was celebrated at Padua. lfr. Victor at a dc-1-isive point in his discourse Fr. Following a warm reception at the hospital. the Choristers gave their sem-ond performance on television station VVTVIQ Elmira, a half-hour program. The success of the telecast testified to the excellent arrangement of the program. As to the type of singing, most selections sung by the choir were for T. T. B. But after a poor start. in which six of the first seven games were lost. the team began to hnd its own. The season ended with a 9-U record. Inadequate defensive work seemed to be the major problem at the beginning of the season. A unique four man zone with one man roaming was devised. This apparently solved the defensive dif- lieulties. Meanwhile, a fast and smooth offensive attack was developed. Coaehed by Mr. Wendland. the team was undoubtedly one of the faster in the area. They were especially successful on large courts on which they could execute the fast break more easily. l.aek of height and depth, however. put them at a disadvantage against the taller and more experienced teams. This earned for him a chance to compete in the county contest, which he won handily. Maynard served as director of the production. For The Carden scene und the Monastery scene a somewhat heavy drama, the large cast was wisely selected. The end result proved that Fr. Herbertis Junior Varsity, in its second year, also posted a losing record, winning only four of eleven games. The Junior Varsity was a bit shaky on the field against better teams and were lacking in power at the plate. Unseasonal spring weather restricted almost all of the pre-season practice to the indoors, depriving the inexperienced players the much needed game situation practice. Bob Bahara, a Freshman, took over a major por- tion of the pitching duties for the Varsity. Ron Gajewski and southpaw Lennie Murawski completed the pitching corps. For the Junior Varsity, Tony Zembrzuski and Joe Pomaski divided the pitching chores equally, receiving help from reliefer Frank Szczepanski. The beginning of a pass play Soccer initiated Paduais intramural program and was widely accepted by the boys. Since there was so much enthusiasm, a heated race for top honors de- veloped. After the first four games it boiled down to a three team race between Zgodzinski, Jabubowski and Kaminski. Kaminski, emerged as victor in the thirteen team Held. Inclement weather put an abrupt end to football intramurals, although each team was able to see ac- tion twice. The boys were divided into two leagues of six six-man teams in this touch tackle program. The games were held after school until the Thanks- giving recess, when snow and rain impeded further competition. A record total of 135 contestants participated in the five intramural basketball leagues. Heated races developed in all the leagues as none of the cham- pionships was decided until the final games. The most interesting race developed in MA7' league. Barstys came from behind to win a 22-19 decision over lVIaselka in the playoffs. Lapsanskiis rebounding strength made them a dil- licult team to beat in MB7' league, as they nosed out Kowalczyk for first place. In HC7' league ,lagodzinskfs team posted seven straight victories after dropping the season's opener to squeeze by Brozek and Zujkowski who had iden- tical 9-2 marks. Baharais team. starting with five consecutive wins. had little trouble winning the HD league race. Jaros' late season performance enabled them to emerge victorious in a three team race in the NEW league. With the acquisition of standards, the students were able to utilize the gym for playing volleyball. Volleyball was thus incorporated into the intramural program for the first time. Although it was a short season, it gave the Padua students a taste of organ- ized team play and also helped to fill in the void between the basketball and baseball seasons. lop Head meets leather in sow-er intramurals fenter: Cfonverging on the pass in football Bottom: Some fancy footxxork with the som-er hall Top: lludnivki and .lakulmowski team up to bloc-k a shot Center: Szydlowski and 'Nluruwski go after 21 loose re- Ziia Spikes Iliff l lmund SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS Zgodzinski lcoach D Stryjewski Kaczmarek Szydlowski Koniniec Marcheski Szutarski Dombkowski Calicki Hulhy Koscielski Scanlon BASKETBALL CHAN! Under the direction of Fr. Emil, eleven Seniors volunteered their services for designing this book. The work was spearheaded by James Jagodzinski, who with the capable aid of Florian Kowalczyk and Frank Bazyk, designed all the page layouts. Kowalczyk was also responsible for designing the title page and the divider pages. Ronald Maselka handled the business end of the yearbook, taking care of the ad- vertising. He also did the filing of negatives and file pictures, which helped to facilitate the darkroom work. Val Lapsanski and Ray Ryniak did praiseworthy work in com- pleting the paste-ups and preparing the work for the engravers. Due credit must be given to Sophomore photographers Peter Chernick and Walter Galicki, Without whose services there would have been a serious deficiency of pictures from the first semester. Senior photographers were Robert Kaminski and Ronald Zgodzinski. These four are responsible for almost all the pictures in the book. Kam- inski with Joseph Barstys were the mainsprings in the darkroom. Richard Passon, with the help of Jagodzinski, supervised the written material of the book. Stanley Janowski, a post-graduate, ably assisted them as typist of the final copy. I' Bazyk R Passon, V. Lapsanski, and R. Ryniak F. Komalczyk, .l. Given the upstairs of the garage for headquarters, the Explorers have done wonders in refurbishing and, now, have an outstanding and very active Post. Father Austin, who has acted as post adviser through many diliiculties and hard times, has been very successful in working with his officers in organizing the many activities. To the president, Leonard Sroka, is due particular credit for his faithfulness and hard work. Ably assisted by Carl Bajdo, the quartermaster, Harry Pinola, the sec- retary, and Ronald Jaros, assistant quartermaster, he has accomplished much in the wide scouting program. In conjunction with the B. S. A. national merit badge program the Explorer Post has organized various individual 6'clubs in many particular fields. Each club has its own oliicers and room for working. These clubs include the Railroad Club, the Arch- ery Guild, the Model Plane Club, the Artists, Corner, the Hobby Shop, the Nature Room, the Weight Lifters, Association, the Tailoring Shop, under the tutelage of Brother Casimir, and a group which makes rosaries for the missions under the direc- tion of Brother Benedict. These many accomplishments are indicative of the success which will inevitably follow hard work and the sensible direction of such endeavors. Fr. 'Xustin mm-lic-s as Pinola and C.
