MHC in fits' To our model, CHRIST THE KING, Giver of that strength and peace which the world knows not of. and to our patron, SAINT ANTHONY OF PADUA, we, the Class of 1947, prayerfully dedicate this, our PADUAN. Page Two 6usl AteJtbilltQfi. „ tyosieuMVid... His Excellency, John Gregory Murray The editorial staff of the PADUAN is to be congratulated on the theme it has adopted for the 1947 issue, ‘resenting the specifications of THIC VALIAS' T WOMAS is outlining to the umrld the salvation of human society, for only in so far as the womanhood of the world is udiant is there any hop - of survival of the human race. Woman is the source of the physical life of mankind, and, simultaneously with her fulfilment of the vocation of physical maternity, it is incumbent on her to develop the spiritual and cultural motherhood that must be the unfailing source of charity in the family. What the child becomes under the tutelage of the mother determines what the adult man or woman will be in shaping the destiny of the human family. Inexhaustible are the topics that may be chosen for indicating the contribution that the valiant woman has to make to the welfare of the individual and the nations. Over and above all the natural endowments given her by God is the sacramental association into which God has invited her to enter with Him in order to reproduce within herself the functions of Mary, the Queen of all icon-, n, in reversing the infidelity of Eve and reconstructing a race of rebels into a kingdom of princesses for the welfare of men and the glory of God. Congratulations to the staff on its choice of the theme, and best wishes for the apostalate of truth in the name of The Valiant Woman! Very faithfully yours, Page Three February 7, 1947. We will never forget that x-y=z, that this is a “government of the people, by the people, and for the people.” or that some verbs are “passive in form but active in meaning.” But above all, never will we forget those classrooms in which we learned to “know God, to love God, and to serve Him. The first week of high school makes freshmen wonder why all of the other girls are so smart, and they, although they don’t like to admit it, so stupid. However, before long they find that every other girl in the algebra class wonders the same thing. Then the frosh relax and begin to enjoy those nightly headaches. Those lovable Tonies too shy to say, 1 love you.” in Knglish begin saying it in Latin. I van hoe becomes the man of the year. Sophomores, true to their cognomen—wise fools—know all the tricks and know that a minimum of study will lie sufficient. Their marks suddenly drop, but. as never before, they enjoy life, struggling all the while through geometry, world history, biology', and. as is customary, they gaily and mercilessly translate Julius Caesar from the Latin into some here-to-fore unknown language. Junior year, brings with it prom worries, and the sudden realization that “we are upper-classmen.” Unhesitatingly the juniors skim through typing, shorthand, and physiology, proving that they, as have their predecessors, can lead the school through another epoch-making year. With the long awaited Senior year, the year of pomp and dignity, comes chemistry class and its bucket brigade. Some of the wiser virgins even learn to read their own shorthand. ANTHONTA.N is their preoccupation and before many issues seniors are made aware that the life of a journalist is not an excuse for omitting homework; that working on PADUAN is not a question of paging through beautiful pictures. As for class, such trivialities are discontinued wherever possible; an excuse from the same is sought whenever possible. Yes, all these, and other countless essential non-essentials—Room 39 with its “wind-up” phonograph, the chemistry lab. home of the clock with the lazy fingers, the tricky fountain outside Room 6. biology lab with the unprecedented hole in the wall, the Ixiokstore with its ever present su| ply of water—all these mean SAH to us, the student body of Saint Anthony High. These girls have guided us uninjured through the school year— without them our number would be drastically reduced! Leaving Glee Club at five minutes after the 11:25 bell, there is no way of telling how many collisions there might have been—between the girls going down to lunch and the delayed and hungry songsters going to home rooms—had there not been a steadfast Student Council member directing us with never weakening voice, “single file please —keep to the right!” Assemblies would have been saddened by the news of a casualty in the hall, teachers would have been saddened by empty seats in place of eager, smiling faces, were it not for the Student Council's faithful guidance through innumerable trying times. To the Student Council, then, we give our thanks and congratulations! Sophomores. Donna Smith. Patricia McLaughlin. Mary Jean Tacheny. Thercaa Molinaro, Betty Otto. Mary Ellen Mueller. Not “with eager stride” do we. the class of '47, conclude our years at St. Anthony High, but rather it is “with eager stride” that we begin the years which lie ahead of us—high school graduates. Four long years ago (which we suddenly realize weren’t so long) our hair in traditional initiation pig tails, dressed in green, and grasping a stuffed animal in our shaking hands, we attended the first all school assembly of our high school life; we said hello to St. Anthony High. Today, however, we are confident that the watchful priests and patient sisters have prepared us for our places in the adult world. Now we feel that, with the ideals of Catholic womanhood instilled in our minds, we are able to go forward and bring credit to our alma mater. The lives of graduates may carry us to every comer of the state, of the nation, or even of the world. However, no matter how far away, no matter how long S. A. H. is out of sight, it will never be out of the minds of the class of '47. We shall never forget the four years we spent in the brick building on the corner of Ninth Avenue and Second Street, the blue and white uniforms, the silence of retreat, and the noon-hour dancing. When we think of high school, we shall think of mother-daughter Communion breakfasts, the daily library scramble for exchange papers, the May Crowning, thrill packed Tony basketball games, and many happy hours with the new movie projector. Those four years have somehow swept swiftly by. We try to convince ourselves that the fifth of June is a long way off and that the Junior-Senior Prom is not a thing of the past. Surely, there will be more Friday night juke-box parties, more weiner roasts, more hayrides, and there will be another Senior Class picnic, and at least three more issues of AXTHONI AN. But nevertheless in spite of our best efforts we know that June fifth is almost here and. with our hair coml ed smoothly and neatly, dressed in spotless cap and gown, with shaking hands clutching our diplomas and red roses, we shall soon attend the last assembly of our high school life; well say. we must say, “goodbye to Saint Anthony High.
