lr ,L I I xg Q? E sc iv: gig im L fi Dear Graduates, It is rather unusual that a group so high spirited and, dare I say, gay, should choose as class patron Our Lady, under the title Sorrowful Motherf' Yet, it is indicative of a trait that we are happy to find in young women of today. To realize that we live in a world of com- plexities and contraditions, and that life here on earth is a vale of tearsn where we find that pain rightly used leads to joy, is significant. Suffering is the price of love, and it is love that can heal the world, suffering has no power in itself 5 it is only powerful to save when it is caused by love and when it is the expression of love. Our Lady is the worldis truest human testi- mony of these facts: she could SING . . . My soul magnifies the Lord And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviouri' even though the shadow of sorrow had been cast upon her at the moment of her Behold the handmaid of the Lordf' From suffering minds and souls have come the greatest masterpieces of art and literature. Francis Thompson summed up this art of suffering in his lines . . . Ah! must- Designer Infinite!- Ah! must Thou char the wood ere Thou canst limn with it? . . . and you will recall other singers whose songs were sweetest when springing from suffering. It has been the aim of your Alma Mater to prepare you for your distinctive role in the Church, the home and civil society, hence, we trust that, realizing it is woman's role to find joy in suffering, you have imbibed, at least, the elemen- tary principles, the fruitful germ of the valiant woman depicted in the Book of Proverbs. Believing that you will go through life singing your Ave to the Queen of Heaven and Mother of Sorrows we pray that she will teach you the art of being the womanly woman so needed in every walk of life today. Remember your chosen Ad Jesum per Mariam! Sincerely, ,ffgaai
