This page sponsored by C. W. and M. COMPANY- Agricultural Implements and Hardware MAY 16,1951 I was in Miami, Florida, to the fair last summer and being an ardent fan of fortune-telling, I stopped into a very popular place on the Midway. I asked the fortune teller if he could tell me what a few of my old classmates were doing. He started telling me a few things I already knew when I recognized that squeaky voice-but where-Oh I know the class tease, Dale Thompson-fancy meeting you here. He gazed into his crystal ball and said, I see a barber chair that has just been recently installed in as barber shop. Oh yes, I replied, Lorin is a member of the Taylor family now. He returned his gaze back to the crystal ball-it became hazy, there was a ship with a girl standing on the deck-it seems Novetta Gunning got tired of waiting and decided to join the navy after all. Next thing I knew a building loomed before my eyes, two people were coming out-why it can't be, again, but I guess it is-Warren Ken- nedy and his second wife, a ballet dancer. His first wife was a millionaire-he believes in this one for the money and two for the show stuff. An old schoolmate, Laurel Richards, married them, he is a justice of the peace now. The crystal ball cleared againkthe fortune teller's eyes widened-my goodness what did he see now. A little house in Newdale-well I'Il be darned- Phyllis Bowman and a string of little freckled-faced Godfreys. Her neighbor, Elizabeth Bailey, finally settled down in her little red sheep camp. Oops, what have we here-a young man on his bended knees-well if it isn't Blaine Evans in one of his perpetual proposals-you know who to. The fortune teller turned his glass ball around. A deep furrow settled across his brow- I see a radio announcer, he's talking so fast we can't understand what he is saying, but I can see who it is and, if you ask me, he's running close competition to Walter Winchell-it's none other than Bill Jonas. Paul Hosoda is President of the SAP Broadcasting station that Bill works for. The scene shifted to a factory district-the name caught my eye Richard Davis 8 Company, Manufacturers of Brilliantine. I guess Dick is going to make sure he'll have plenty on hand if he ever needs any. Some of these things he was telling left me awe-struck-But, as I was anxious to hear more-the fortune teller regained his second wind and once more we proceeded. A very familiar building was brought to my attention, why would they show Rick's College- certainly none of St. Anthony's students were there. It seems Claire Jergensen started school there and is now in charge of the dormitory-family tradition you know. Her favorite student is Bill Lewis who keeps flunking each year so that he can come back and be the school yell leader. Perpetual succession, I guess. It looks as though the determined old maid, Pauline Ard, has devoted her life to the cause of humanity. Could it be that she had her heart broken. For a minute I caught my breath because the next scene gave me a start. The most horrible face l'd ever seen-some of the features on that face were familiar-well fan my brow-John L. Davis is doubling for Dracula in the movies. It never fails to happen-one student from dear old St. A. always becomes a movie celebrity-of one kind or the other. Ah HAI! I see Bud Powell and Vernal Stoddard have reached their life's ambition the two biggest pool hall loafers in the county. They are Ross MacArthur's two steady customers, of course you know he operates the Kwitchyerbelliakin Club. Time was running short and the fortune teller was growing tired but I urged him on with a five-dollar-bill, that's a big enough urge for anybody. We both peered into the big glass ball waiting for the next revelation. I could see a blond head. lt belonged to no one but Norma Jenkins. She spends most of her time parked on her boss's knee-Clifton Browning. She is a very private secretary in his very private concern. We turned next to Bettie Coffin who had such a hard time deciding what she wanted to do that she settled down and got married-of all things-to an All Star Basketball player who turned out to be a coach. Before I could say scat I saw Alcatraz-my gosh I was afraid of that-Francis Fitzgerald was sentenced to life and you couldn't guess what for-he started a nudist colony in Labrador and they all froze to death including: Delsie Rawson, Evelyn Clark, Mary Smith, and Ruth Warnberg due to one of Mr. Jones' class room experiments. Margie Henderson is operating a date bureau. She has a string of customers that are always on the look-out for a new face-of course they couldn't be Keith Rudd or Keith Ricks-they wouldn't ever do anything like that-or would they. Emma and Lu Harrison couldn't be passed up. I recognized them as soon as I saw them. They joined the CCC nurse corp-they are kept plenty busy now. The seer sighed as the scene shifted- what next for heavens sake-you never can tell. I saw a large crowd-a prize fight-we have a worId's heavy weight champ in the dear old class of 4l. Billy Morton-imagine it!! Thomas Ross came running down the aisle with a pail of H20. He's turned professional now. He figured with his experience as the manager of the football and basketball team-that he would be able to hold the job as the champs manager. What have we here The Parkerhouse Rolls Gazette with Don Parker as editor. They say it has a circulation of 2,000,000-big shot, eh? While we are discussing Parkers we'll turn to Orin. He is excavating the ruins of Europe-it got all blowed up in a little war they had over there or do you remember? Orin is noted for his book entitled A Lot About Nothing. No class would be completed without a song bird-well I see Louronna Bradshaw is a bluesinger for the Cafe Society. She's making quite a hit. Her manager is none other than the class Romeo, Don Lewis. My attention turned next to the smart suburb of St. Anthony-formerly Parker. Marie Stoddard has startedo school for studying buds, Don Butler, Dean Butler, Vern Singleton and Albert Bair have pooled their mone i I Y fl one and went into business making up excuses for students who don't have their assignments B I h O 'II ' ' ' ue a rgi e and Dawn Beddes are running a race to see who can raise the most little sargents: Helen Huskinson has taken over her Mother's position at the Industrial School and is secretl , Y engaged to one of the inmates, Forrest Rudd. A few of her pets are Nile and Royal Meservy- who tried t b h h ' ' o urn t e sc aol house down. I could hardly believe it but a group of our dear class mates joined an amateur unit and hitched to New York to appear on Major Bowes porgram. Grace Knicely led the group with her violin andra trio consisting of Arva Hiatt, Clara Olsen, and Carma Pulley took the prize. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the fortune-teller was unable to tell me an more and Y consequently, I was left puzzled about the remainder of our dear classmates. Qui! Small Climaxing a steadily-improving journalistic program in St, Anthony High School a charter to Quill and Scroll, International Honorary Society for High School Journalists, was obtained by interested students. Permission was granted by David Lawrence, Editor of The United States News, to name the chapter for him. Initiation cere- monies, conducted by the Sugar-Salem Chapter, were a major social event of the year. Charter members are, left to right: Donna Burton, Vice-President, Inez Skrede, Adviser, Orin Parker, Presi- dent, Fae Stanford, Secretary, and Wanda Underhill, Treasurer. Under the capable leadership of Alton B. Jones, the Dramatic Department of the school organized Troupe No. 448, of the National Honorary Society of Thespians for High Schools. The year's program opened with the initiation ceremony. Thereafter monthly meetings were held at which dramatic coaches from nearby schools and colleges gave pointers on howto produce better drama. The ultimate goal of the local Thespian Troupe is to raise the standards of our school plays. Charter members are, left to right-Robert Parker, honorary member, Rosemary Welch, Alton B. Jones, Sponsor, Phyllis Clive, Vice-President, Blaine F. Evans, President, Betty Jean Griggs, Orin Parker, Betty Coffin, Treasurerg Marilyn Lewis, Rella Daw, Secretary, Bill Lewis, Claire Jergenson, Bill Jonas, Reporter, Dick Davis. 7ke Page Twenty-Nine This page sg ,4zz.sGfmz mf ew Samba play Qui' M -., Thus page sponsored by HOTEL IDAHO- The Trovehng mon's other h P g Th fy Danzig lainie 7mm 2 3 fu .V T 0s , ww Zwhwfgpeecke ORIGINAL ORATION POETRY READING MEMORIZED HUMOROUS EXTEMPORANEOUQ DRAMATIC ORATION READING SPEAKING READING '11- Page Th rty One eww pro, gwfff A 'Q P' RI . ATHLETICS In the field of sports, great success was achieved. After a season of hard games the Cougar Gridders placed third in all-district football. I A Many exciting basketball games were played and at the Sixth District Basketball Tourna- ment, held in our own gym, the Cougars reached district finals, tying for second place. I U Up-and'coming boxers of St. A. H. S provided real enjoyment for townspeople in their money-making matches, and, at the State Boxing Meet, a Cougar Boxer was runner-up for all- state champion. y t Track events in the district meet showed evidence of much training on the part of our team. ln Intramural Sports, class competition ran high and enthusiastic students found new ways to enioy life at school. GIRLS' SPORTS An active program of both inter-school and intra-school girl sports was carried on. Cougar- ettes participated in baseball, basketball, volleyball, and other events. The P. E. class instigated a program of tumbling and dancing. FUTURE FARMERS Through the medium of Ag. Classes, the F. F. A. Chapter worked actively and gained many outstanding results. Judging teams sent to the Ogden meet placed third out of forty schools. They also entered the Blackfoot meet and carried home high honors. In F. F. A. basketball, the local chapter took second place. Listed as a great success was their annual Harvest Ball of last fall. HOME ECONOMICS The Home Ec Club was a smoothly-functioning and well-directed organization. The climax of their program came with the presentation of the first annual Hobo Ball. JOURNALISM With the introduction of a Journalism Class into our curriculum, St. A. H. S. staff work on both annual and paper was improved. Of major importance to school history will be the Charter to Quill and Scroll granted to us this year, and the founding of the David Lawrence Chapter. Such a program will greatly improve journalistic endeavor in St. A. H. S. DRAMA AND DECLAMATION The early-fall presentation of Keep Off The Grass -with double casting of parts, started a wider interest in this department for the year. One-act plays, a project of Speech Class, were received with enthusiasm and o wide program of events followed. A Charter to National Thespians was secured to replace the Honorary Dramatic Club, and an active Thespian program carried on. Entry rnto the Preston Forensic Meet resulted in a first place in extemporaneous speaking, a second in impromptu, and a third in pantomime. Climaxing the forensic division was the Sixth District Speech Festival, in whch St. Anthony won one Excellent rating, and four ratings of Good. The Contest Play, Bread also won the rating of Good. The drama year was concluded with the presentation of the hilarious Ride 'Em, Cowboy -The Senior Play. DEBATE For the third consecutive year St. Anthony Debaters placed first in district finals and were gap-ranking in the state tournament. ln addition, the local debaters tied for first place with L . . . . . . t ake City in the Debate Division of the Preston Forensic Meet and brought home second place sweepstakes trophy from that meet. MUSIC A great number of music-minded students participated in the year's highly-successful music program. The Band and Twirlers were called on many times to render their services by enthusf iastic towns eo le. Th ' f ' ' p p e presentation o the Christmas Cantata was well received. Later, the easy presentation of the difficult Opera, Martha made the school proud of its fine vocal talent, In preparation for the District Music Festival, students worked hard and the results achieved were well-deserving of their talents. This year, St. A. H. S. is even more proud of its outstanding music department. SOCIAL Many highly-successful social events were sponsored through the year by the various organ- izations. Such events as the Mixer Dance, The '4I' Dance, The Harvest BalI, The Glee Club Formal, The Pep Club Formal, The Hobo Dance Old-Clothes D Th S , ay, e t. anthony Debate Tournament, Older Boys' Conference, and the many other school activities ave' become a definite part of the school memories which we can always enjoy. The top- ranking event of the social year was the Junior Prom, which next year's Seniors sponsored with artist success, using as their theme, The Old South. Concluding the year was the Senior Ball, 6 f ' PEP O ef C0fhl'f18f'lCefT1ef'If SXEYCISES.
