The defending senior class came from a slow start, but managed to capture its third first- place title with ”C-C-Catch the Wave. Second place was given to the juniors for Dew It To 'Em, while the sophomores snared third with Jolt 'Em. Fourth place was given to the freshmen for Crush 'Em . The traditional spirit week was also in effect with dress up days this year including: Come As You Are (Pajama Day), Opposite Sex Day, Toga Day, Teacher Look-alike Day, and Red-and-White Day. Well, 'twas the night before Homecoming and all the toilet paper fairies were out and about. St. Ansgar's main street was strewn with roll after roll of bathroom tissue, as were many homes around town. It was rumored that one red brick house in particular got more than its fair share of the white stuff. 1 Collette Simon and Noel Collier, alias two familiar teachers, pose for a snap-shot on Teacher Look-alike Day. 2. The crowd waited to hear who would become queen. On the loud- speaker came the answer, .. and the 1987 Homecoming queen is — Nancy Weber! The tears and emotions over- flowed as the seven girls ran to congratulate the new queen. Earlier that day, the king, Tim Klapperich, was crowned in front of the student body at the Homecoming pep rally in the gym. All of this excitement started in the homerooms of the senior class. Eight king and eight queen candidates were chosen by the senior class, two of which would become the the royal couple. The final ballot was drawn up and distributed to the whole student body to vote upon; hence, the 1987 King and Queen. The actual Homecoming football game was against the Nora Springs Eagles. The Saints blew the Eagles completely out of the air, as they ended the game with the score, 76 to 0, which is a school record for the most points scored in one game. One of the highlights of the evening was when a large gust of wind blew a kick-off astray, out-of-bounds, and straight into the waiting arms of Coach Sherman. 1. The 1987 Homecoming Royalty. Yes, our students do manage to keep busy in the “good ole' summertime The activities started with a bang as the band headed for St. Louis (see following page ) and our industrious Annual Staff finished up the great book of'87. In June many of the teachers attended summer schools, workshops and did curriculum work at the AEA The month of July saw the Register's 16th Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI XVI) ride into town with its ap- proximately 10.00 bikers and accompanying vehicles on one of the hottest days of the year. July 23 St Ansgar was prepared Many of the bikers stopped for a dip in the Cedar River at the Mill Dam and or Halvorson Park on their way to Osage to spend the night On July 28. Bruce Hemann cap- tured first place in Class D at the Iowa State Singles Cham- pionship Trapshoot in Cedar Falls As champion he won a trophy and a cash prize Also in July, several Saints who are also 4-Hers won prizes at the Mitchell County Fair. Jenny Thur- nau got an award for baking fortune cookies and Laura Vervaecke and Rachel Hinman won in photography. Paul Heimer was chosen for 4-H County Council August 1 brought top football players from all over the state together in the Annual Shrine Bowl in the UNI Dome at Cedar Falls. St. Ansgar was well-represented on the North squad by player Jim Hen- drickson and Coach Rich Sherman Later in August, several STAers (Travis Fell. Mr Duncomb. and the four “hussies'' pic- tured) took part in the summer stock production of Little Orphan Angela,'' directed by Mr Timothy Peter. And we can't forget our athletes - Jennifer Brower garnered honors for distance running. Jeremy Ask for free-style wrestling, and Mr and Mrs Tyler continued their winning ways in area hus- band-wife golf tournaments. The first evening was spent touring the Arch and the surrounding vicinity. Going up in the Arch turned out to be a scary and claustrophobic experience for some. The following morning, the band marched and played at Six Flags over St. Louis. After the performance, the day was spent on rides, playing games, and eating food. Their money-making activities include concession stands and raffles at basketball games, besides paying hefty class dues We took a survey of all the classes and asked them what the best and worst aspects of being in their respective classes were. Among the junior re- sponses were Having a few more privileges, but still having to pay a dollar if getting caught in the halls Seeing the end is near (a best), put- ting up with the freshmen (worst). In our survey, the soph- omores concurred that hav- ing the freshmen to pick on was their greatest joy. Other bests about being a soph- omore are that you get your driver's license and that you only have two years of school left. The strangest re- sponse we got was that the best thing about being a sophomore was having Ni- cole Klapperich in your class! The worst thing about be- ing a sophomore is that the classes are harder, you have more homework, and that, even though you have two years down, you still have two years to go Rose Coronado Julie DeMaris Nicholle Dieterich Tracy Dohler Andrea Falk AUen Feldt Janis Fossey Vicki Fox Rachel Gonnerman Dustin Gullickson Brian Hansen Paul Havlovic Mike Heimer Diane Hemann Lana Hemann The Chris Bensend l-love-school-more- than-life-itself look. t KT ' PPF HI IT ■VHT HHHB Jodie Johanns Eric Johnson Jason Johnson Nicole Klapperich Eddie Koenigs Fran Kramer Jason Leidall Keith Levan Patrick Lowe Bret Luense Becky Mayer Chris McLaughlin Leon Merten Melissa Morse Elaine Mullenbach 22 ABOVE LEFT: Sophomore class officers: Sec- retary Gary Rust; President Jay Collier; Vice President Jeremy Ask. In our survey, the freshmen said that they enjoyed mak- ing new friends, being out of junior high, and having more freedom and privileges. Also according to them, be- ing a freshman does have its advan- tages: you have a lighter homework load than other years and fewer re- sponsibilities. It's no secret, though, that in every freshman's heart there lurks a deep longing to be an upperclassman. And then watch out! 24 Hey. Freshmen, no running in the halls! That goes for you. We Have a Lot To BACK: Monica Hanna, Kim Patterson. Stephanie Brown, Cassie Sorenson, Becky Horgen. and Tanya Thurnau. FRONT: Sarah Kimber and Twyla Beyer The St. Ansgar Saints Cheerleaders certainly had a lot to cheer about this year With all of the exciting things that have happened to the teams and individuals that they have supported, the girls and guys that put in so much time, sweat, preparation, and never-ending practices had an overabundance of reasons to cheer. In addition to all of the fund raisers that the cheerleaders faced (the car washes, the yearly bake sales, and a special feature this summer, the stand during the 15th RAGBRAI), the spirit-lifters had to travel a great deal more than usual to all of the extra tournament games. And this year, there was an unexpected expansion of the squad with the attachment of three males. During one of the do-or-die volleyball games, the St. Ansgar Saints' fans caught their first glimpse of Ned, Ted. and Fred. alias. Chace Groth, Loren Nydegger, and Joe Sherman, dressed in their infamous Saints' stocking caps, black sunglasses, and towels (borrowed from the school) fashioned into flowing capes. From that point on. the three male volunteers were a permanent fixture in the success and glories of St. Ansgar sport functions. Amidst the change of the sporting seasons, the trio also went through change. The first change was in their dress; the capes and hats were discarded for red-and- white basketballs, which they wore on their heads, and bright red shirts that stated their names in white on their backs. Second, they acquired Tim Peter as their coordinator. All cheerleaders have one theme in mind — they want to raise moral and spirit. There are several different ways to lift a down-trodden heart. The cheerleaders held inspiring pep rallies, provided excitement on the pep buses that traveled to away games, built spirit with creative signs such as SIGN UP 4 A VICTORY, and posted witty locker designs on the players' lockers. There were also special things that the cheerleaders did other than cheer. For example, the football cheerleaders toilet-papered the homes of all the members of the football team on the eve of Homecoming and held a breakfast for the team the next morning. The basketball cheerleaders furnished “Rowdy Rags for a lot of the St. Ansgar fans at some of the more important basketball games, while the wrestling cheerleaders supplied the wrestlers with orange wedges after they had competed. All the cheerleaders bestowed corsages on their team members, waved the rousing spirit stick, and. of course, cheered to the traditional school songs. When the Saints Come Marching In and On Wisconsin and to some of the traditional cheered Go Big Red , The Saints' Beat , and We're the Red, We're the Red and White. They rolled into the school year with smaller numbers because of some scheduling problems, but that didn't seem to dampen either their spirits or their well-balanced sound. During the marching band season the band performed at home football games and also traveled to the Dome in Cedar Falls for the football playoffs. About twenty members partici- pated in Honor Band in November in Nashua (see Honors page). The band members later gave Mr. Neerhof a band director's nightmare by showing him the charred remains of their green Bach chorale books. A funeral complete with music (of course) followed this sad sight. (NOTE: the funeral was for the books, not Mr Neerhof.) Miraculously the books reappeared a short time later. In other words, they were brought out of hiding. The pep band did its job of pepping up the crowds at basketball games this year. Many students received I's at small group contest (see Honors) and the concert band performed in the annual Band Bonanza in March. Large group contest brought its own rewards and as a last fling the band planned a Concert in the Park on the evening of the last day of classes for the 1987-88 school year, June 2. 1. In the fall, All-State Auditions were held with seven singers being accepted. State Small-Group Contest, held in March, was extremely successful. 23 entries went to Cresco High School and received 19 Division I ratings and four Division II ratings. Two outstand- ing performances were awarded to St. Ansgar students: Jill Osmonson and Loren Nydegger. Large-Group Contest was held at Britt on May 6th. The Concert choir and Treble choir received straight Division I ratings with the Treble choir receiving a perfect score. The year ended with a trip to Colorado. The highlight of the trip was attending the Music Maestro Choral Festival in Colorado Springs. Over 80 students and chaperones went on the five day trip. The students helped to raise the money for the trip by selling cheese, sausage, and candy bars. They also contributed with community service odd jobs around St. Ansgar. Their main function is the performance at the annual Swing Show in late spring- time. The band has become known over the years for its novel approach to attire at this function, this year being no excep- tion to that. To escape the bright lights, many of the students wore sunglasses which related well to the summertime look of their dress. But then, Pete was everyone's friend. He had very few enemies and more friends than I can count. He was always there for anyone that needed cheering. Not many things bothered Pete. That is just how he was. He lived for life and took every day as it came. When he died, a little of each of us died. And that special part can never be replaced. I will never forget Pete, and neither will anyone else. I will always remember him with a silly grin on his face and his happy, care- free ways. I am glad that I can say that I was his friend. anonymously submitted by a friend Duncomb 81 Strangers in With the beginning ot a school year come many new and exciting things, including the new foreign exchange students that arrive from different cultures and backgrounds. St. Ansgar High boasts two of these special visitors this year. Peter Y. Osce' and Nick Nydegger traveled to Iowa to see what everyday life in rural America is like. Peter Osce is an eighteen-year-old exchange student from Alsemberg. Belgium, (near Brussels) staying at the Gerald and Marilyn Schotanus farm near Carpenter. Pete has a father, Luc; and mother. Lisette; and a younger sister. Lien in Belgium. Both parents teach. Some of his hobbies back in Belgium were playing the tenor horn, being the chairman of their student council last year, going out with friends (his main pastime), and traveling to different countries. His hobbies in America included playing the baritone horn in band and the North Iowa Concert Band, working on the paper staff, traveling to school functions, giving speeches to area clubs, and traveling as much as he could — side trips to New York City, Washington. D C.. Chicago, other cities, states, and possibly to California. He also visited all the states around Iowa. A few of the subjects Pete took were Government. Speech. Contemporary Novels, German III, Band, Choir, and P.E. Peter had never sung in a group before, so it was quite a change for him to take a choir class. One difference between our two cultures, according to Peter, is that Americans don't spend as much time on meals as Belgians do. People spend at least 1-2 hours on meals. Not too many people have microwaves in Belgium. Peter isn't sure of his plans, but he has narrowed it down to going to a university to major in English. Germanic Philology, or political science. 1 Peter posing for the camera with the Washington Monument in the distonce 2. This is Peter in one of his stranger moods 3. Dominik. or Nick as everyone knows him. is eighteen years old and comes from a small town about the size of Stacy ville. His home town in Switzerland is seven miles from Interlaken, which is famous for its downhill skiing environment. He has a father, Urs. a mother, Kathy, and a younger brother, Reto. Some of Nick's hobbies in Switzerland were skiing, windsurfing, soccer, going out with friends, and traveling to other countries. Some of the places that he saw in the U.S. were the Mississippi River, Chicago. Williamsburg, Virginia. Denver and Winter Park. Colorado; and Washington D.C. One of the most unusual things that Nick saw was the Iowa State Fair In America. Nick was the football manager of the Saints football team, participated on the track team, enjoyed going to school and social functions with newly- made friends, and lifted weights faithfully after school. A few classes that Nick took were Algebra II. Government, World Geography, Chemistry, Creative Writing, and Beginning Typing In the future. Dominik plans to coach sports and or teach a foreign language. He wants to attend a university for this, but must make up for the year in the States before doing so. 1.
