On August 4, 1986, as he was returning to St. Ansgar from a school-related meeting in Stacy- ville, Mr. Jensen was involved in a serious two-car accident. He spent approximately fourteen weeks at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN, recuperating from head and other injuries. As the school year began, the three principals, Mssr. Mueller, Turner, and Tyler, shared the decision-making responsibil- ities. Mr. Tyler served as the Su- perintendent Designee. It was decided by the school board that a substitute superinten- dent was needed. Norm Kolberg, Superintendent of the Riceville school system, was hired begin- ning with the second semester. His title is Administrative Assistant, and he will remain on the job until Mr. Jensen can return to work. A rather unique schedule was worked out between the two schools. The new members were encouraged to learn the FHA creed, motto, flower, and symbol at one meeting and were rewarded with a different ingredient of an ice cream sundae for each. Capri Cosmetology visited and performed a demonstration at another Fall meeting. In November, the chapter attended the district FHA meeting at N1ACC, where Noel Collier was elected Vice President of the district. Another new twist was a cookie sale on Valentine's Day. Sweetheart Swirl was held in March, co-sponsored with the FFA. Brenda Mayer, Kelli Marsh, and Noel Collier along with Mrs. Wendt, attended the State FHA Convention in Des Moines in late March. Tracksters secure best season in school history; 3rd at State The 1987 edition of the St. Ansgar girls track team solidified its claim as one of the top girls track powers in the state with a seasonal sweep of all their major meets, including the District Meet, and attained a third place finish at the Class 2A State Meet. Averaging 127 points per meet, the girls shellaqued all opposition on their way to their second straight conference title. With many letterwinners returning next year, the girls tracksters should once again contend for the state crown. Junior distance stand-out Jennifer Brower led the charge after triumphing in last fall’s cross-country meet, garnering another state championship in the 3000 meter run and a second place finish in the 1500 meter run. Amy Theobald finished third in the state 1500m competition and ran on the second place finishing 4x800m relay team. Other members of the state's runner-up 3200m (9:33.93) relay unit were Deanna Rustad, Lori Gerdts, and Brower. Rounding out the Saints State competitors were Ann Miller in the long jump, who finished sixth with a school record leap of 17 feet, 1 1 2 inches, Lori Gerdts, who pocketed an eleventh place finish in the 800m run, as well as a new school record, Stephanie Ask, the state's seventh place finisher in the 200m dash, the school record setting shuttle hurdle team of Sara Sherman, Nancy Weber, Lynda Hemann, and Miller earning a time of 1:07.64, and the 4X200m relay unit reaped twelfth place at state . Comprising that team were Betsy Thome, Karla Hackenmiller, Miller and Ask. The Distance Medley Relay team set yet another school and conference record, registering a 4:33.93 time. Members on that foursome were Hackenmiller, Cindy Retterath, Andrea Falk, and Brower. Saints tracksters attaining conference records were Jennifer Brower in the 3000 and 1500m runs, Ann Miller in the long jump and the Distance Medley squad. Little bits and pieces of laughter mixed with tears, paragraphs and pages written through the years. The carefree days of childhood, the growing days of youth, a few illusions shattered, the endless search for truth. The friendships we remember, mistakes that we regret, the ending of a love affair we never could forget. Yes, memories are happenings, each one a different kind, each one a separate chapter that is printed on the mind. We can't erase the sadness, or edit out the tears, we can't undo the wrong things we've done, we can't relive the years. But since memories keep building, each day can be a start, of making new and happy ones, to store within the heart. 92 1. Cindy Blake takes it easy. 2. Laurie and Kristie- looking good. 3.
