Float-building began on Saturday, continued on Monday, and concluded on Tuesday night. The theme this year was “Commercials. The Seniors captured first place with Charmin's Team Will Wipe ’em Clean. This first place win broke their 3-year tradition of fourth place finishes. The Junior Class came in second with its float entitled, Saints Dynamo. Aren't You Hungry For a Victory Now? the Sophomore float, received third place. The Freshman creation of Saints and Victory Go Hand-In- Hand, came in fourth. The usual dress-up days during the week were as follows: Teacher look-alike Nerd day, Hawaiian day, Mismatch Inside-out day, and Red and White day. The rain that had lasted all week cleared up by Friday and it turned out to be a beautiful day. The week was completed with a Friday afternoon parade, a pep rally, a 42-8 victory, and a dance. Clockwise from top: The Seniors' first-place float. Laurie Low being crowned Homecoming Queen 1985 by the 1984 queen, Sue Adams. It began to appear as if what happens every fall would eventually happen to It Happens Every Summer — the students would pull it off — with the 3-Act Comedy by David Rogers. The performance on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, November 2-3, came off without a hitch. Well, almost a pop can appeared mysteriously on the set (left by a prop mover?), along with Dreeble, the cast pet. During one crucial practice, a microphone was kicked and thought to be broken. Luckily it wasn't, for it could have been costly in more ways than one to the efforts of the cast and crew. Veteran actors, Randee Lenz, Darrell Mullenbach, and Helen Scripture, all seniors, had major parts, as did sophomores Karla Hackenmiller and Shannon Johnson. The cast and crew, under the direction of speech and drama advisor, Shirley Brodersen, numbered approximately 40. Speeches of welcome and farewell were given by the officers of both classes and door prizes were awarded. The Senior prize, a portable T.V. was won by Laurie Low. The JV team also had little success this year, finishing off with a conference record of 2-11-1. Both teams expect next year to bring new spirit and determination to guide them to a winning season. 1. Varsity in a huddle. 2. Coach Baldus hitting a few practice balls. 3. Bob Smith made the 1st Team All-District and Joe Miller made 2nd Team. The 9th grade team ended the season with a 3-5 season. The 10th grade team ended the season with an 8-2 record. The scores were too high to be on a competitive level, due to being a yung and experienced team. However, I have a lot of admiration for the team for staying with it when times were tough. 'The most positive moment was section- als at Lake Mills. The girls placed third with Monica Hanna being runner-up medalist and advancing to regionals at Tripoli. Moni- ca's opportunity to advance to state came to an end after a difficult time with the first nine. She and most of her teammates will get another shot at things in future years and still continue to improve. Coach Townsend The boys golf team fared well through the main part of the season. They started out shooting 180 for the first three meets. They dropped down to 176's for a couple of meets and then the week before conference and sectionals, they dropped down to the 168 mark. Being in a position to compete for the top spots was not to be, however. At confer- ence the team shot mediocre rounds to place fourth and in sectionals it was a disappoint- ing last. Now with the summer approaching and a commitment to play over the summer, the end result for next year, I am sure, will be a more satisfying one. Coach Townsend Even though we officially don't have a team, St. Ansgar has been well represented for the past two years in the sport of cross-country running. Jennifer Brower, a sophomore, is coached by Mr. Wilkerson, who has helped her post outstanding records and to become known as one of North Iowa's best athletes. In her freshman year, Jennifer competed in three races. She took first place in Belmond, third place at districts, and seventh place at state. During her sophomore year, Jennifer compiled an even better record that included five first-place finishes, culminating at districts. At the state meet, she ran a close race and finished second. Jennifer ran her best time of the year at Belmond, where she finished almost a full minute ahead of everyone else in 11:36. Coach's comments — The 1985 vol- leyball season was one of the most suc- cessful seasons in the history of St. Ans- gar volleyball. The team set records by going undefeated in dual meets and hav- ing a total season record of 22-5. The season proved that with a posi- tive attitude, hard work, and confidence, a team can and will win. Much of the success can be attributed to excellent leadership by senior captains Karen Weis and Laurie Low and the develop- ment of an outstanding group of under- classmen athletes. This volleyball team was truly a team with all players con- tributing a successful season, much be- yond the expectations of the players and coaches. 1. The teams gained much valuable experience and snowed great improvement of skills and strategy as the season progressed. The players have much natural athletic talent and enthusi- asm which will help them continue their winning ways in the future. The 1985 team was successful because when they got knocked down they got back up — always moving forward to overcome most of their challenges with hard work, sweat, and strain. 60 J. V. Coach's comment: The Saint varsity girls basketball squad completed a fairly successful campaign with an overall record of 9-10 and a fourth place finish of 8-6 in the conference. The nine wins marked the most ever for the girls team, and included a 6-1 mark the second time through the conference schedule. The Saints were lead by seniors Randee Lenz, Nita Cimmiyotti, and Karen Weis. The Saints look to improve in the upcoming seasons (despite the loss of three team leaders) as they have many fine young letterwinners returning and a 12-2 Fresh-Soph squad to build from. Klapperich and Hemann led blocked shots. Klapperich also was the team leader in assists and steals. Coach Thorson commented, Before the season started, we felt that we would be a respectable team, but we were conservative in projecting the number of wins we would get. Alternates chosen in November were Paula Jahr and Jodi Wilder. The pompon girls participated in many events, including the 1985 Band Festival in Mason City, the Variety Show, and several football and basketball games. Members of Annual Staff working on this year's survey. b S3 Every Thursday, after school until approximately 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. there are many noises coming from room 108. There you will find a bunch of willing volunteers hard at work on the Annual. The year starts out in September with a magazine sales campaign, led t y the freshmen. Tne students sell magazines, books, records and tapes to make money to help finance the cost of the yearbook. If they sell twelve items or more they receive a free Annual. Other activities this year included the Halloween Dance in October and a small birthday party for Berend in December, a member of the Staff and our foreign exchange student. Toward the end of the year, in addition to completing their third and final deadline, the Annual Staff tallied a survey of the high school kids' favorites and fads. 88 1.
