' •' « sr r P'- 0 ' FFA St. Ansgar High School's FFA Chapter, under the advisement of Mr. Tom Dudding, has been involved in many activities within the last year. In the Fall, we initiate new members and Chapter Farmers at our annual Porkfest. In February we host a Parent-Member Banquet during which time proficiency awards and scholarships are awarded, and officers for the following year are installed. Some of our money-making projects include smashing herbicide cans for area farmers and selling fruit. We also participate in leadership conferences and state and national FFA conventions. Some of our members enter FFA contests in parliamentary procedure and speech. One of our more popular activities is Sweetheart Swirl, co-sponsored with the FHA. It's a way for young adults to assume responsibility and gain leadership skills by working together. FHA has sponsored several activities this year: a kidnap breakfast to initiate new members; the annual chili supper in the fall; and we've hosted various speakers. There are also many activities that the FHA and FFA chapters take part in together: swim parties, hay rides, cook-outs, and Christmas caroling. The annual Sweetheart Swirl, a formal dance, is the major event that the two clubs plan and organize. Our chapter also sponsors Hush Day in February, awarding a Mr. Irresistible or Miss Hard-to-Get to the person who does the best job of either ignoring or persuading members of the opposite sex to speak with them. This fall, the chapter attended the District FHA meeting at NIACC. Laurie Low, our district representative, was chosen secretary of the district. The Rose Breakfast is held at the end of the year to install new officers and to say farewell to the Seniors. WfHp In the annual Homecoming float competition, the Seniors ran away with first place this year with their entry, Falconbusters (taken from the popular Ghostbusters song from the movie of the same title.) In a surprise upset the Freshmen came in second with State of Shock. For a second year in a row the Class of 87 (Sophomores) took third place. Their float was called The Warrior. And a very discouraged Junior class took fourth place for the third year in a row with their float, Eat 'Em Up, based on Eat it, a spoof on Michael Jackson's popular song, Beat It. 1. and 2. The traditional dress - up days were held, however, and they included: Hawaiian day. Opposite sex day, Costume day, Toga day, and Red - white day. Float building got off to an unusually slow start due to the cold weather and lack of workers and a change in the format is likely. The students came through by Thursday night with their song - titled floats. The Saints topped off the week with a wind-blown parade, a Friday afternoon pep rally, a discouraging 19- 0 loss to North Central, and the Homecoming Dance which followed the game. 1. The D.J. was Mark Kirchgatter, assisted by Andy Buechele. Winners of the costume contest were Kent Hemann and Tom Collier as Arabian Sheiks, Terry Lowe as Dracula and Darrell Mullenbach, as just another Arab. Girl winners included Lisa Mayer as a little devil, brides Jennifer Bruggeman and Ann Jorgensen (complete with guest book, ceremony, and rice throwing), and Janet Kuntz as a clown. Congratulations and thanks to all who 2i attended. St. Ansgar High School students had a great opportunity to broaden their horizons this past year by hosting two foreign exchange students. Christel Wolf, who turned seventeen on Thanksgiving Day this past November, comes from Gottingen in West Germany. It is a city of about 130,000 near the East German border. Her parents, Erhard and Inge Wolf, have no other children, so Christel had to adjust to living with siblings when she moved in with the Ken Theobald family of Stacyville. Lynn Theobald was Christel's German host sister for a month during Lynn's year-long stay as a YFU exchange student in West Germany and then Lynn's family offered to act as a host for Christel. The Saints Volleyball and Basketball teams benefited by Christel's stay here. She was a starter on the varsity volleyball team and at the end of the season made 2nd team All- Conference. Christel's other hobbies include reading, writing, and making new friends. Christel commented that she really liked school here. 24 Foreign Exchange Students Eduardo Lazo, 18, from Monterrey, Mexico, also had some adjustments to make in his move to rural Iowa. His hometown in Mexico has a population of about three million and he came from a family of his parents. Hector and Bertha, four brothers, and one sister, to a family of three sisters, at the Burton Scripture residence on an acreage south of St. Ansgar. During his stay he helped out at his guest family's business, the St. Ansgar Locker, and said he liked the work. Eduardo's other activities here include drawing and listening to music. He especially likes to draw houses and buildings. As for school, Eduardo commented that he liked sports and other activities being included in the school because it isn't that way in Mexico. His only dislike was the way Americans think of Mexico as ''one big ranch down south. Our congratulations to both of you, Christel and Eduardo, for surviving the tough Iowa winter and the teasing of your classmates and also our thanks to you for all you helped us learn. 25 class line-up on float clean-up day. 4. Shawn Kittleson and Kim Thome, buddies 'til the end. The annual FHA-FFA Sweetheart Swirl was held on March 2, on the eve of one of the biggest ice and snowstorms of the season. The rainy weather didn't deter anyone from having a good time, however, as approximately 200 people danced the evening away to the tunes of KROC on Wheels, a disc jockey service from Rochester, Minnesota. The theme for the evening was Bryan Adams' song, Heaven. All refreshments and the vividly-colored decorations were provided by the FHA and FFA. Members of those organizations also chose 5 Sweethearts and 5 Beaus as candidates. They are pictured above. Chosen to reign over this year's Swirl were Janet Jaspers and Rich Havlovic. 35 36 1. Throughout the school year the Junior parents earned money through drawings and by selling concessions at home athletic events. This was the third consecutive year that the Prom was run by Junior parents rather than being a school-run event. The purpose of placing it outside the school's jurisdiction was to encourage the community and the students to take responsibility for hosting an alcohol-free event. Some of the activities that took place were the Grand March(the public was invited in to view the decorations and the formal wear), the garter ceremony, skitsfincluding one by Mr. Tyler), and capping off the activities, a formal dinner with Junior parents serving. Speeches of welcome and farewell were given by the officers of both classes and door prizes were awarded. PROM April 13, 1985 7:00 p.m. - 1:00 a m. Tickets: $6.00 Seniors: free Variety Show 1. The boys had better luck this year, ending their baseball season with a win-loss record of 10-12, finishing 8-6 in the conference to give them the third place berth in the Cornbowl Conference standings. Both teams qualified several players for All-Conference honors. Kathy Hackenmiller and Kristie Wagner made the All-Conference softball team with Juniors Mina Isaac and Janet Jaspers receiving Honorable Mention. In baseball, four players made the team including one Sophomore, Bob Smith. The others were Seniors Jeff Branstad, Paul Dunn, and Nick Theobald with Senior Dan Mullenbach and Junior Joe Miller receiving Honorable Mention. Because of a change in policy, this year's REFLECTIONS contains the softball baseball statistics from last summer, the 1984 season. In previous years our yearbook always went to press before the summer schedules were completed. Thus, the win-loss records, all- conference selections and other statistics went unreported. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but feel that for accuracy's sake our policy had to be altered.
