She is just away! With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand She has wandered into an unknown land And left us dreaming how very fair Its needs must be, since she lingers there; So think of her faring on, as dear In the love of There as die love of Here, Think of her still as the same, I say, She is not gone, she is just away. J.V. FOOTBALL The 1977 Fresh-Soph Football team was the undefeated Com Bowl Conference Cham- pion; not because they were overly blessed with talent, size or speed, but because they took what assets they had and developed them with hard work and determination. It was a pleasure to coach these kids because they had the ability to be good and the de- sire to be great! First row; G. Koenigs, C. Edgington, S. Warrington, J. Hackenmiller, J. Adams, J. There were some frus- trating times, but overall, the attitude of the girls was good. Their best performances and two wins came in the last of the season. This indicates the optimism of the team members. Jim Anderson, coach Front Row: V. Nerad, S. Hackenmiller, M. Schrandt, S. Hackenmiller, N. Hemann, J. Jaspers, B. Nack, Back Row: Coach J. Anderson The junior varsity squad brought home a record of 5 wins and 8 losses for the 77-78 sea- son. The overwhelming hustle, desire, and never-ending team spirit displayed by every J.V. Saint leaves each with fond memories and promises of high hopes for the even more challenging years ahead. Representing the squad as co-captains were Sue Warrington and Doris Hackenmiller. The outstanding rebounder was Renae Cole with Doris Hackenmiller taking the lead in total points scored. Wendy Ehlke made her proud contribution to the team by shooting 60% at the free throw line. The 1977 Volleyball season was filled with memories and many rewarding ex- periences. Injuries befell, but spirit prevailed. We had many good times including the annual M G M's and Gatorade party after practice. The beginning of the season gave trouble, but by the end we had the bump-set-and-spike technique mastered. There will be Combowl Conference Volleyball next year. The future is looking up — can you dig it! ! ! Sandy Hackenmiller and Jeannene Wilde (Varsity co-captains) Varsity Front Row: Mrs. Halvorson, J. In looking back over seven years of teaching at St. Ansgar, and specifically the speech and drama programs, I see many things that the students and St. Ansgar can be proud of. First, 1 think there is the quality of the productions that we accomplished. Shows such as Fiddler on the Roof, Noah, Company of Wayward Saints, George M, and Scapino are different productions, ones that many high schools the size of St. Ansgar would not begin to attempt because of such aspects as cast size, costume requirements, and staging requirements. And yet the students have accepted the challenges and met them well. Secondly, I am proud of the professionalism that has been shown by all the students I've worked with. Time and time again, 1 have been pleased to hear comments from coaches and audience members who could not believe that the works performed were by high school students. This pleases me, as I've always felt that the high school students could do anything they set their minds to, and its been proven over and over. Sometimes while tired and in the midst of a production that looked like it never would have an end I'd have my doubts - but the students always came through. Thirdly, I think of the enthusiasm and dedication that has been shown with each production. Our productions have had tense moments, and extremely sad moments, and also estremely uplifting times. And all through the hills and valleys, the eagerness and willingness to improve continued, although I'm sure there were moments when each stu- dent would have liked to throw in the towel. As I leave I'll remember the students, my casts, and all my crews. 1 boy in thanks to you for seven great years. It is my hope that with new leadership the program will grow and blossom as it shows every potential of doing. A good friend of mine in theatre once said that in producing a play, it was a little like dying; that with each creative moment, it lived for a time, and was gone; never to quite be recaptured again. Thus, a part of you dis- appears with those creative moments. I know that in years ahead these creative moments that glowed so brilliantly for a few nights, and now are pleasant memories will remain special. They are a part of me that will never be duplicated again in exactly the same way. They are jewels to be treasured. Thanks, JRA James Ashcraft German Club[ GERMAN CLUB: Row 1: G. Cimmiyotti, D. Whose life work seems finished, Perhaps is waiting for the call. While that life so young and tender Held so much here for us all. Then sometimes I get to thinking, Perhaps the world down here below, Is just a flower garden, Where Gods flowers live and grow. And perhaps when God is lonely, Like us, He loves to roam In his Garden, gathering flowers Just to beautify His home. Tho’ He takes the full bloom flowers, Drooped and withered that need his care, Still he needs a bud or blossom, To scatter with them, here and there. So He takes a few choice blossoms, Just the rarest He can find, And because God needs them up in Heaven, Must comfort loved ones left behind. Here it is June 6 and we are still working to finish up some copy and layout some pictures, all with you in mind. I feel as though we have succeeded in showing you the times of 1978. It amazes me to see people become so wrapped up and involved in a year long daily project. • Oh we have those contagious times of exuberance, wuch as when someone finishes up a page or when I get soaked with water at the annual picnic, but that's OK, 1 never get mad; I just get even! I wish to thank all my staff for giving themselves and you a great yearbook. Robb Christensen Another year and another annual have come to an end. We have tried to represent the entire school and some of the many events during the past year and feel sure that the long hours put into this book were worth it. We'd like to thank Mrs. Pleggenkuhle, Beth Duenow, Mrs. Michaels, and everyone else who helped us complete this annual. A special thank- you goes to Mr. Christensen for all his time spent as our photographer advisor, and for putting up with such a rowdy group. Hopefully someday as you're digging through a box of old ' 'stuff'' and find your 78 yearbook, it will bring back memo- ries of a great year. 0 Jeri Morrow, editor
