Members of American Indian Movement gained attention for their cause by capturing and holding town of Wounded Knee. South Dakota. Senator Sam Ervin opened Senate Watergate hearings. Published by the Yearbook Staff of St. Ansgar High School St. Ansgar, Iowa FIRST ROW: J. Andersen, D. Theobald, D. Blake, P. Bowers, C. Cole SECOND ROW: H. Dockstader, T. Bowers, Miss Medberry, J. For some it is a memory book, for some a dust collector, but for dozens of students and friends who put into the book both time and effort it is a masterpiece. Well, almost. All we can do is say thank you. Yet thank yous don’t seem enough for the thousands of man-hours put into the book. Maybe the experience and the final result, the book itself, will be thanks enough. Editorial Staff Tracey Bowers, editor Joan Wageman, associate editor Jonnie Andersen, associate editor Miss Medberry, advisor 2 Student Life Sports page 4 page 32 People page 48 For Snickers, and Crunch, and Hersheys, and Clark, we thank thee Student Council. This year a candy ma- chine was added to the Commons and out of the good- ness of the Student Council's hearts, all the proceeds have been donated to US to help make this book pos- sible. So, THANKS, guys. The Reflections Staff Student Council is to be the voice of the students. We as coun- cil members feel that the student body doesn't make full use of the council's power and feel we could accomplish more if we had more participation. This past year the feedback from the students has increased, resulting in a very successful home- coming, especially the dance and a new candy machine. With continued cooperation from the students, there is truly no limit to what might be gained. Jeff Halverson S. C. President IjPEPSI I 4 FIRST ROW: J. Halverson, R. Durben, J. Patterson, M. Loadstone, lead by former class member, Jim Wuerfel, played a variety of boogie, hard rock, and just plain foot-stomping music. Due to a snowstorm, causing school to be cancelled, many unsuspecting couples were left ticketless. However tickets could be obtained at the door. Surprising enough just about everyone stayed until the end where there was a little hazzle when some people climbed up on stage! All in all, everyone had a wonderful time. Soothes his hands along his uniform. Gently drums the ball against the floor Then measures the waiting net. Raises the ball on his right hand, Balances it with his left. Calms it with fingertips, Breathes, Crouches, Waits, And then, through a stretching of stillness. Nudges it upward..,. A man's reach must always exceed his grasp or what's a Heaven for... In competitive sports as in life. Your goal must always be in front Just far enough to still be within distance of the reach but out of easy grasp. Girls basketball provides the opportunity to set individual and cooperative goals and see the continuing results of dally effort to reach that goal. The team spirit and cooper- ation necessary to obtain a working Unit so essential to today's game breeds inselfishness and sincere desire to care about the other guy as well as never letting your link of the chain weaken. The way of competitive sports is a way of living for all of us and provides young people at least the chance to reach. The ball Slides up and out. Lands, Leans, Wobbles, Wavers, Hesitates, Exasperates, Plays it coy Until every face begs with unsounding screams And then And then And then Right before ROAR-UP DIVES DOWN AND THROUGH. TO RUN. . . . .is the most natural form of sport, none is more exhilarating or exciting to be involved in or to watch the sounding of feet down the stretch and that sudden lurch forward in the final effort to break the tape . . .is the most grueling and unappreciated form of sport, to work endless hours, to sweat and strain and give all you have and still not be the one to break the tape Now who can say which person is the better for it—the one who sweat and finished second or the one who bothered to run— 1ST ROW-S. Teresa Thome Foreign Student Ingrid Ohberg One of my best years ever is soon ended and I will look back with laughs and maybe tears on that which has been different in many aspects, but also much like Sweden. Coming from the large city of Gothenburg (Vi million) to little St. Ansgar is quite a change, but a pleasant one. To attend school here is a lot different than at home, mainly because of the few courses and many extracurricular activities, but living with the wonderful Neeley family that has shared everything with me, and taking part in a lot of activities has left no time for me to be homesick. Things that I will remember are homecoming week with all the different events, the football games, the plays and the choirs—and much, much more. I will bring home an admiration for how well your school works after classes and all that goes on until late hours of the night. Last but not least, I will miss all my American friends and my host family and I hope that I have contributed some to the understanding of other people and cultures in return for all that everyone in St. Ansgar has given me. It's an invaluable experience to be an exchange student and I hope some of my friends will take the opportunity some day to come to Europe and of course to Sweden. For the meantime I'll miss you all. A great thanks to you all for giving me this year! Hansen Cheryl Huebner Walk Memoirs of my younger days are wrapped up in cellophane and are a roses bouquet. Oh, Lord....Where did the times go? Oh, Lord....Who will ever know? I find an old yellowed photograph of my friends together having fun—sharing laughs. Oh, Lord....Was it all that fun? Oh, Lord....Has life just begun? I pick up a golden pen that represents a club I once was in. Oh, Lord....Who will ever know? Oh, Lord....Where did the time go? Now, as we take our final walk through the hall where we've all once had our private talks. Will we be leaving in defeat? Knowing that some of us may never meet again.... And face life alone.... Without our friends.... Who have meant so much? Photograph by Mark Walk We, the Reflections Staff, have tried to capture and record the entire school year's events and put them into one single book. We have encountered many changes in our school life and our yearbook also shows signs of change. We hope this book has brought back many happy and meaningful memories of the 1973-74 school year. A special thank-you goes to our advisor. Miss Jan Medberry, for all her ideas and artistic lettering talent. Also a big thank-you goes to Mona Neeley, our photographer, for all her time she spent taking and developing our pictures. And also thank-you, student body, for sup- porting us and the individual homeroom pictures. Without you, why would we be? 100 KISSINGER Secretary of State Henry Kissinger met with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat to settle prob lems of mid-East war and Arab oil embargo.
