A YEAR OF SCHOOL . ENTRANCE , . . .CONCERN . . . AND ANTICIPATION OF WHAT’S TO COME. In this yearbook, we focus in on a unique school year. The difference—not in the setting, hours, or goals, but rather the reactions of 460 individual people to the events and situations of 1970. Joan and Jean 6 NEW ADMINISTRATION UNDERWAY James L. Mitchell Keeping a large school district, both in population and area, functioning is a complex and challenging business. Along with our school board in planning the direction of our district, are the talents of three men, all experiencing their first year at St. Ansgar: Mr. Mitchell, superintendent; Mr. Wemette, high school principal; and Mr. Pyburn, junior high principal. These men must all work together to meet the needs of the students by giving each one a useful and constructive education—one that is applicable in our changing, progressive society. Thomas G. Wemette Roger Pyburn SCHOOL BOARD Harley Walk, Darrold Bless, Millard McNutt, Lynn Gordon, Ronald Priem, Secretary; Newlin Jensen, President; Daryl Mc- Cready, Gene Wagner, James Mitchell. LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT Mr. Green entertained his world lit, and advanced comp, classes with scads of movies, records, and filmstrips this year. When lie’s not walking the halls in a daze, you might find him standing outside enjoying the spring weather or running errands for the annual staff in his black Bug. Mr. Green’s warm smile and the friendly atmosphere of his room are a welcome lift to all students, especially the de- pressed seniors last quarter. Mrs. Hendrickson manages to keep herself busy with her American Lit. and Novels classes. We all know how the Sophomores love those filmstrips and records, and the ju- niors and novels students love reading those paperbacks on the night before the papers are due. If there are wierd sounds coming from the northeast corner of the building and they aren’t beeps and buzzes from the radio shack, they’re probably coming from the German room where Miss Sacks tries to make bilinguals out of her students. The second-year class gets to go to the Amana Colonies in the spring. Lucky second year class! and Lucky Miss Sacks! Mr. Betts’ first year at STA was kept jam-packed with his drama and speech classes, the two plays, “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” and “My Fair Lady,” and playing basketball and handball in the gym in his spare time. Mr. Betts used a new method to get the cast to mem- orize lines—fines for all missed lines were deposited in Piggeth”, a plastic bank, and the funds were used for a cast party after the plays. The fuzzy-lipped, smiling, English teacher has a new room this year. He’s moved his freshman English small groups and his creative writing class out to the trailer, located back of the school. As for the moustache, I guess no one has any real objections at least at last count it was still there. 9 Richard Johnson C. Richard Sherman MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT Whether it be algebra, geometry, general math, or advanced math, the busy math students manage to “blow their cool” on bewildering numerical problems. Led by the fearless (??) mathematicians-Mr. Johnson, Mr. Shaw, Mr. Sherrpan-the stu- dents have tolerated the formulas, theorems, equations, and postulates for another dreary year. The math teachers should be commended. It's quite an undertaking to keep 300 kids interested in such a dull subject!?!?! Mrs. Carlene Luense PHYSICAL EDUCATION James McGrillis DEPARTMENT A new name (Mrs. Luense) and a new face (Mr. McCrillis) are the feature attractions of the physical education department. The “squatty body” kept the boys out of trouble by drawing them to an occasional class with wrestling, basketball, and the opportunity for ringing the fire alarm. Mrs. Luense and her athletic girls played badminton, basketball, swam, worked with gymnastics, bowled, and had outdoor sports in the spring. Richard Barta John Sether MUSIC DEPARTMENT Mr. Barta enjoyed a successful first year at STA. As a member of the Music Department, he also had a busy year, especially around April 4 and 5, the dates of small group contests. He directed the marching and concert bands, and he had a large undertaking in the direction of the orchestra for the spring musical, “My Fair Lady.” Thanks to Mr. Sether, the choir de- partment had a new branch added, a cappella which was finally worked into the schedule the second semester. Those hour practices will come in handy as the a cappella goes on tour to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. The choir, small groups, and solos made an impressive showing in Cresco at small group contest. SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Mr. Madson Mr. Gillespie Mr. Strandberg St. Ansgar’s science department offers something for every interested scientist, whether it be in the field of earth science, biology, chemistry, or physics. The science faculty-Mr. Gillespie, Mr. Madson, Mr. Strandberg, and Mr. Woolfries-manage to keep the senior high students busy with labs, worksheets, and large group lectures. The high point of the year is, of course, the science fair. We know how hard we all work on our projects .. .just tell the teachers that we put our work off until the last night. INDUSTRIAL ARTS Mr. Peterson Mr. Schubert Mr. Schubert and Mr. Peterson parole the industrial arts department at STA. The many activities of the department include drafting, woodworking, metals, electricity, and welding. The boys and the few privileged girls drew house plans and then built scale-model houses. Those last few weeks of school sure were hectic trying to get those last drawings in on time. The Indus- trial Arts Club worked on their dune buggy in the shop so that kept a lot of kids out of the cafeteria during free time. u VOCATIONAL DEPARTMENT The social studies department is alive and thriving as any weary freshmen or junior could tell you. The masterminds are Mr. Thrond. Mr. Luense, Mr. Shaw, and Mr. Hogan. Mr. Luense carries a full schedule with American History, Economic Geogra- phy, Eastern Civilization, and coaching. We all know that he manages to keep his classes on their toes with assignment sheets and various other busy work. Mr. Hogan, the famous psychologist quoted in MAN. THE MANIPULATOR, and historian, “to a degree, has now survived two years at STA. He teaches American History, psychology, social studies, coaches basketball, and “so forth, on down the line’’. We hope the sinkers, led by Coach Dick, go to state next year. Mr. Shaw, along with math, geometry, and U. S. History, claims the title and responsibilities of athletic director. It was doubt ful that Mr. Thrond could find his way to the steering wheel through the mounds of “Newsweeks” stacked in his car, but he did it. He also managed to survive his fourth year at STA- another year of government and a fantastic semester of sociology with the class of ’70-a good experience for all. To round out the year, he also teaches world history and takes field trips to mysterious places. The class of ’70 breathed a sigh of relief and proudly placed their names on the chairs of the lecture room on the last day of school. Richard Hogan James Luense The Home Economics Department added many new one semester classes this year-coed, infact so that for the first time, boys were seen coming from that area. The new classes are child development, family living, housing and interiors, clothing, and foods. Highlights of the year were the merged family living psychology field trip to Faribault to visit the school for the deaf and the state mental institution. Dave had another very successful year with his FFA boys and their accomplishments. It was a little hard to see who was to get what honor at the end of the year, though, because he wrote on the awards himself and no one could read his writing! Maybe the next FFA project should be a typewriter. HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE Andrew Woolfries Finally, after many years of persuading, the supposed solver of all problems got himself an office he can call his own with room to spare. Mr. Woolfries, the new head of the de- partment is ever willing to fix a schedule problem, help Seniors decide future plans, or assist students in solving private problems. ART DEPARTMENT Karen Tritle The art classes 1, II, III went in with the band and chorus this year for their second Fine Arts Show. Proded on by Miss Tritle the art students work busily in the many differ- end aspects of art. A new idea was put into use this year for the art II students. They could choose the areas in art they wanted to endeavor. Patricia Hinman Langley Jensen BUSINESS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT There’s never a moment that the north hall of STA isn’t blaring with the sound of typewriters, adding machines, shorthand tapes, and other accessories of the business department. Mrs. Hinman and Mr. Jensen try to keep it down to a dull roar as best they can. There’s always some depressed looking chap disgusted over his unbalancable bookkeeping assignment given by Mr. Jensen. Maybe some day we’ll envy them when they can get their budgets and income tax to come out and we can’t. DRIVER EDUCATION J. David Runyon In and out of the ditches is the usual procedure of J. D’s educational and nerve-wracking driving sessions. After class everybody feels a little faint from the gory lectures and dry movies. When the short semester comes to a close, the only thing you have left to worry about is meeting the Driver Ed car on the street. FOCUSING IN ON TEACHERS ... The program, known as YFU, short for Youth For Understanding, encourages better relationships and understanding among people of many nations through the exchange of students under various programs. Students from America may travel to Europe, Japan, or South America for either a whole year, or just for the summer months. Students from Europe, Japan, and South America may also study in America for various periods of time-de- pending on the program they are involved in. The FYU program is growing in our community. With help from host families, foreign students, the alumni of the pro- gram, and the community, we are constantly changing, improving, and expanding the program. Everyone’s continued interest and participation is needed to make our FYU program a real organization of international understanding. STA was fortunate this year in having two students—Reinke Duhme, from Germany, and Milton Lins, Jr., from Brazil. Reinke spent a full year in St. Ansgar with his host family, the Lawrence Dieterichs, and Junior spent the second semester with the Merritt Beaman family. With his American brother, Denny, being in many sports activities, Reinke had the opportunity to be manager for the football and basketball teams. At Christmas time, Otis Tesch, president of ‘S’ Club, presented him with a Letterman’s jacket. For this, Reinke received a standing ovation from the student body. We’re really happy to have had you with us this year, Reinke! Junior had a bit of a disadvantage coming at the end of the year, but this didn’t seem to hamper his style much. He was fascinated with wrestling, because he had never seen it before, and attended a goodly number of the meets. He also won many new friends in the student body of STA, who all wish he could have stayed a little longer. 1970 STUDENTS: REINKE AND JUNIOR 38 REINKE DUAME For many years I had always wished 1 could come to the U.S.A. Several times, my family in Germany hosted a YFU summer student, and we had a lot of fun together. I am the youngest in my family in Germany. My older brother and my two sisters attend universities there. Both my mother and my father administrate a large forest area, and our new home is built in the forest. Here in St. Ansgar, 1 lived in the family of Lawrence and Evelyn Dieterich. 1 really enjoyed having nice experiences with Denny and his friends. This includes school, where students from all classes helped me to get to know nice people. Wherever I came, 1 was readily welcomed. I had the chance to get acquainted with many subjects, and was happy to be able to see a different view of the subject matter. Here 1 would like to thank all those who made my stay so interesting and enjoyable. Reinke Duhme 39 MILTON FELIPE LINS, JUNIOR I come from Recife-PE, Brazil, and I live there with my brother,Ricardo, 17, who is living in Michigan also as a YFU exchange student, and my twelve-year-old sister, Ana Amelia. We are a very happy family. My father, Milton Felipe Lins Sr., practices chest and heart surgery, and my mother, Maria, is a wonderful housewife. I really enjoyed these days that I spent in Iowa, because I met really nice people and I lived with them, doing the things that they do, living as they live. At school, I had a great opportunity to know a lot of people of my age, and to make lots of friends. The moments that I spent here will always be recorded in my memory. 1 also must not forget to thank everybody, the teachers, everybody, and to say THANK-YOU! 1 hope 1 can come back to see you again sometime! The track team, under the direction of Mr. Sherman and Mr. Luense, had a very successful ’70 season. The boys worked exceptionally hard this year, after stampeding the innocent as they raced the halls on cold, rainy days. The hard work paid off as many individual and team records were broken. Participating in many different meets, the team never failed to finish in a respectable position. Congratulations on a great season! STA’s two outstanding track men were Lowell “Otis” Tesch and Bob Donahue, both seniors. Otis became the first track state champion ever in the history of STA when he won the 2-mile run at the state meet. He set a new state record of 9 minutes 46.2 seconds, some 11 sec- onds under the old record, and ranking in the top 15 times recorded in the state of Iowa. Bob Donahue finished third in the same race with a time of 9:56.2, also under the old record. The trophy case in the lobby bears the many trophies and medals awarded to the track team during the 1970 year. 82 RECORDS SET EVENT TIME RUNNER(s) 2 Mile Run 9:58 (conf. record) 9:46 (state record) Lowell Tesch Lowell Tesch 120 High Hurdles 16.2 Jim Libersky Mile Medley 3:38.4 Dan Durben Steve Michaels Ray Rhoades Curt Feldt 2 Mile Relay 8:71.3 Lowell Tesch Bob Donahue Dan Durben Curt Feldt High Jump 6’0” Mike Fossey 83 “How to lap the other guys” by a Saint. The boys could be seen panting throughout STA land in the fall—cross country takes a lot of work and a lot of practice. Don’t under- estimate the amount of effort and desire it takes to excell at this sport. It takes much devotion to keep running after that umpteenth lap, doesn’t it, boys? NEW DIRECTOR FIRST ROW: L.
