1969 HIGHLIGHTS ST. ANSGAR SENIOR HIGH ST. ANSGAR, IOWA In the following pages of the ‘Highlight’ a story is re- corded. It is the story of the students, faculty, and adminis- tration of the 1968-1969 school year. This story began just as hundreds of others have; scared freshmen piously walking down the halls while rather conceited seniors showed their rank. The days came and went. But each day was something precious another day at STA. Sports events were played, plays held, concerts performed, dances attended, and final- ly graduation day came. To the class of ’69 their STA story was about to close. They would be together as a class for the last time. 1 hope the following pages bring many pleasant and meaningful memories, especially to the classof ’69, but also to all those people who made it the wonderful year it was. Editor Sue Walk i PERSONNEL IN APPRECIATION OF A JOB WELL DONE The duty of education, a complex job with tremendous responsibilities, has been given to our administration. The members of the Board of Lduca- tion and the administration of the learning centers of St. Ansgar Commun- ity Schools have tackled the problems confronting our school, an often thankless job, which includes hours of wrestling with the cold hard facts and endless debate with conflicting opinions. For their consideration and efforts, we thank them and acknowledge their work on a job well done. Wallace E. Burns Superintendent of Schools Walter A. Rixen Vernon Bottorff Marilyn Rapien High School Principal Junior High Principal Elementary Supervisor BOARD OF EDUCATION: Ronald Priem, Newland Jensen. Harley Walk, Darold Bless, Roger Clagget, Wallace Burns, Lynn Gordon, Gene Wagener, Millard McNutt. 6 ART DEPARTMENT Karen Tritle You will find the budding artists of STA at their regular hang-out in room 18. Here, you will find a conglomeration of clay, shellac, sandboxes and also the more domestic art materials. The zany creations are mixed in with the serious works to provide a general atmosphere of dynamic creativ- ity. The products of these artistic talents were exhibited at ihe first Fine Arts Festival and were valuable proof of the ingenuity of young students. Patricia Hinman: Shorthand, Business English, Office Practice, Per- sonal Typing and Business Law. HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE Art Lee Stuck away in a tiny cubicle is a Giant Among Men, Mr. Art Lee, our faithful leader at STA all six foot plus of him. His problems are an accumulation of all the students’ problems at this senior high, whether it be a choice of a college or a date. Struggling to figure out a senior’s gradepoint. he is never too busy to play Dear Abby” and straighten out a deathly serious problem. Larry Kester: Machine Shorthand, Secretarial Typing, Bookkeeping. BUSINESS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT A coded language of scribbles and dashes never ceases to amaze the non-shorthand students and ever frustrate the future secretaries trying to re- member if that odd sign is a significant word or just another doodle. Some of the most skilled machinists at the senior high are those people who work daily with the shorthand machines, typewriters, calculators and adding machines. And some of the most frustrated students are those trying to balance figures in a bookkeeping assignment. Good Luck! You deserve it! DRIVER EDUCATION J. David Runyon Wildly careening around corners and laying rubber is not J. D.’s style of driving as those of you lucky enough to be taking driver ed know. For you really are lucky: we all have to pay at least a dollar to get into a show to see all those bloody bodies and hear all those hilariously funny jokes. So good luck on your driving tests and pray god you don’t have to parallel park! 7 LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT Gervin Green: World Literature, Advanced Composition, Practical English Mr. Green has a very interesting senior English class this year. They have been writing haikus, (hi kooz’), which are Japanese poetry forms consisting of 17 syllables. This is a typical haiku written by a student: THE SUN A beam of sunlight Did dance from behind the dark When your smile shined. Mr. Green also enjoys teaching advanced composition and world lit- erature. He comments, “Young people are very enjoyable to teach because they are so creative. Beverly Hendrickson: American Novels, American Literature As the sophisticated literature instructor breezes into the room, glances at the clock (Only 7 minutes this time!), she notes the ju- niors diligently studying their Hawthorne short story? Besides Amer- ican Literature, Mrs. Hendrickson teaches a course in American novels. In the course description book, it says, “The emphasis . . will be on contemporary American authors (i.e. Steinbeck, l aulkner. Hemingway). So where did James and Hawthorne and (Ugh) ( ooper come in? And where did Jacqueline Susann go! Seriously, the students found a great personal experience in literature of our own America. Carolyn Sherman: German Na, sie sieht immer noch ein bisschen blass aus. Now for all of you who didn't even suffer through German I: Eat your hearts out! If you see a freshman hurrying down the hall, his lips moving as fast as his short legs arc pumping, you will know that he is hurrying to Room 18- oder deutsche Klasse as it is more commonly called by the studi- ous bilinguals of STA. And then there are the German Fours all seven of them including one male forgetting their books, losing their Rollers. failing the gender tests and begging Frau Sherman to teach them to swear in Ger- man. We won't forget German names, skits or tapes or pat- tern practices oder die schreckliche deutsche Sprache! Roger Hallum: Advanced Speech, Basic Speech, Drama 1 2 Mr. Hallum has begun a new course this year, drama, which has attracted numbers of students interested in this cre- ative field. Under his direction, the one act play, ANTIGONE, received straight one ratings at the state speech contest. The first major musical he’s ever tried to di- rect was OKLAHOMA and was a success in every way, drawing enthusiastic crowds for each performance. Larry Pleggenkuhle: English 9, Creative Writing That grinning individualist who always lets his classes out three min- utes past passing time (claims he has no clock!), tunes in on lunch- room conversations, and brandishes a three foot club in order to keep his poor freshmen from revolting. is up to his usual tricks. This time, as he opens the door and a 90° heat wave rushes into the cafe- teria, he claims the creative writing classes are driving him nearer the brink. Come on, Mr. Creativity himself! Can’t you find a better ex- cuse? MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT Those poor students slaving over geometric formulas and memorizing theorems are undoubtedly under the supervision of Mr. Shaw or Mr. Sher- man. They are some of the many mathematically, or not to exclude anyone, non-mathematically inclined students who are enrolled in either algebra I or II. geometry, or math I or II. We know it’d hoof got us, but how can something good be so bad. Carlcnc Kuchncr: Girl's Physical Education Janies Kain: Boy’s Physical Education PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT In a joint effort to reduce the usual 1 riday crowding of the IMC and take a mob of restless TGIF-STAers from the cafeteria, the heroes of our Physical Education departments have set up a program of Activities such as bowling, swimming, and volleyball. The number of students taking part in these activities has proven their popularity. A newly revised scheduling of the boys’ and girls’ Phy. I d classes provides an opportunity for a battle of the sexes in joint classes. John Sether: Vocal Music Dean Torkelson: Instrumental Music MUSIC DEPARTMENT The choir, under the direction of Mr. John Sether, has also had an exciting year. At state contest, the vocal students received 17 division I rat- ings. The choir as a w hole was invited to Wartburg to give a solo concert. A record of ten students won the honor of going to All-State and 10 members attended the Dorian Festival at Luther College. He also shared honors in music and drama departments. The Saints Marching 80 (now grown to somewhat more than 80) topped off the end of a thrilling football season with an exciting show w hich will go to the International Marching Band Contest at Winncpeg this summer. For the sixth year, the band won more Division I ratings than any other band, bringing home (15) division I soloists and (16) division I ensembles. At large group contest at Britt on May 5. the St. Ansgar Band succeeded in capturing straight one ratings. With this excellent record, the members are eagerly anticipating the coming trip this summer. “On to Winncpeg, Saints.’’ SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Charles Madson: Biology. Advanced Biology The ehem room, presided over by none other than Harold J. Schmelzer, is always a center of busy activity, whether it be spray- ing water fights, poisonous gas experiments, tossing pennies 20,000 times or polishing those horrid black counter tops. Next door are the studious freshmen, quietly doing their earth science labs. And on the other side, that notorious green-thumbed biologist, Chuck Madson. rules over a court of noisy sophomores, busily cutting up frogs.and worms, and senior Bio II’s in- jecting chickens. We can't forget the physics classes, trying to talk Mr. Schmelzer out of another test and the Albegra 11 peo- ple cursing over another equation. INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPARTMENT Roland Schubert: Drafting, Woodworking. Metals. Elec- tricity, Welding Rol Schubert spends his time in the industrial arts department trying to keep the large majority of boys busy and separated from the small minority of adventurous girls. Drafting, a course in mechanical drawing, teaches the use and care of instru- ments, freehand sketchings and lettering. Woodworking students try their hands at creating furniture and other porjects in this course. General metals explores the fundamentals of metal work and includes such areas as welding, sheet metal, and bench metal work. And for those interested in electronics, general electricity deals with basic theories and also gives valuable practi- cal experience. VOCATIONAL DEPARTMENT Dave Hinman: Vocational Agriculture Mr. I tinman proudly announced that the St. Ansgar Chapter of Fu- ture Farmers of America won the premier exhibit at the Minnesota Spring Barrow Show this year. Mr. Hinman also had another an- nouncement-the birth of his baby daughter. He also included the “paddle method” in his teaching as a means of discipline. Richard Hogan: American History II. Psychology. Latin II Dale Thrond: Government. Sociology, World History Terry Christianson: Vocational Homemaking Mrs. C hristianson’s senior homemaking class is having quite a new experience this year. The foreign exchange student, Maria Gon- calves, has been teaching the class how to cook many of her native dishes. Mrs. Christianson also tried something new this year for the FFA-FHA Sweetheart Swirl. The swirl, Midnight Royale, was a totally black and white formal, decorated with black and white roses and many silhouettes. James Luensc: American I listory I, Eastern Civilization, Eco- nomics, Economic Geography SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT Mr. Hogan has had a totally new experience in St. Ansgar this year. He is new to the St. Ansgar schools, is new to the modular schedul- ing, and is teaching all new subjects. He comments, “I’ve really en- joyed this year. The kids are all just great.” This year. Mr. Luense, along with the other coaches, shared the pride of taking their basketball team to the sub-state tournaments. He also has found a new system of teaching this year. This is the “Think System:” the students must arrive at their own decisions. Mr. Thrond has again made it through another year with those ex- asperating seniors, retaining his customary calm. Next year’s class: the seniors of 1969 envy you for he has been willed a sense of hu- mor for next year. Don’t forget gang: worksheets and book reports, NEWSWEEKS and government lectures! The graduating class of 1969 most generously will to the future seniors of 1970 all of their best memories from STA! 11 GRAFTON JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY 12 Wesley Fiala Instrumental Music Carrol Jones Math Lorayne Kulik Art, Reading Robert Peterson Industrial Arts, Science Dale Lamb Vocal Music John Reith Science Lavcrne Rohlfscn Social Studies, Physical Ed. STA had planned fora foreign exchange student. During the second semester, Maria Goncalves ar- rived in St. Ansgar. Her first impression of the school was rather painful as she had fallen on the ice in the front of the building. Next she sat in Mr. Rixen’s office in utter silence for about an hour because she couldn’t speak very much English. Maria is about five foot, brown eyed, with long dark hair, and a friendly smile. She and her family live in Jundiai, Brazil. She has one brother 13, who is blonde and has green eyes. Her father is a construction engineer. While here at STA she lived with the Meritt Beamans’. There was a surprizing likenses between Maria, and Denise, her new sister. Maria said she had little difficulty in convincing her parents to allow her to come to the U.S. However, her mother was afraid of the planes that were being hijacked to Cuba. Maria thought her English would be improved enough in a few weeks, but she found she was still trying after four months. She fit right into the busy schedule of STA. and before too many days was just another one of us “Saints”. Maria wrote. “I’m glad 1 came here because I had the chance to know nice people, a different way of life, to look at the outside world, and to have my own ideas about this country. I know I'll never forget my experiences in the United States as an exchange student.” 125 COMMENCEMENT ’69 The last walk out. Accepting the class Mr. Harley Walk. Marshals Jamie Koster and Martha Chancellor. 127 We waited four years to act this way! I DREAM I see today’s world witli all its oppression and strife. And constantly ask myself if I can’t find a better life. Away from wars where people so foolishly die, Away from people who hate but tell not why. I long for answers yet unforeseen. Answers obtained through my every dream. I dream of a world where God is loved. Instead of mocked, stepped on, pushed and shoved. 1 dream of an endless love for every land, Where all brothers, black or white may walk hand in hand. I dream of a universe where war is a forgotten word. Where all are at ease, with peace assured. 1 dream of a people who live out of love, Instead of today’s machines who exist merely out of their love to live. 1 have a dream of a love more than a beautiful face. Where ones inner feelings are full of grace for all to see. I dream of a world where none is alone and astray, Where all have friends to show them the way. I dream of making the world happy instead of sad, And 1 dream of countless other things, making good out of bad. Only God and reality make me face today, Because it is my responsibility, I cannot run away. I must fight the losing battle, 1 must challenge the unbeatable foe, For God will prevail by no other mean, Yet, he docs not take away my privilege to dream. 1 dream alone but beg for more to see, what these dreams can do for you and me, Dreams full of hope for all to hear, dreams of making each a better year. Dreams of a great potential which may come true, Dreams of a better life for me, for you. 128 Michael Dieterich I 0 % . vjgggiy -.•—xss? vEssS . — - ‘-r- -icS rr-' v .; ' • 'V' v ‘Zi .. ’ .
