Before his eyes he could see the statue of the Immaculate Mother. As the cool rain fell on his face, his eyes opened for the first time in his life and he was able to see. The apparitions of the Blessed Virgin to a poor fourteen year old girl, Bernadette Soubirous, first occurred on the morn of February il, 1858. There were eighteen in all, the last took place on the sixteenth of July of the same year. These awe-inspiring visions of beauty and holiness were seen in the hollow of the grotto of Massabielle. Lovelier than I have ever seen, said the girl, who was the only person to see the mysterious apparitions. It was not until four years later that the bishop of the diocese declared the faithful justified in believ- ing the reality of the apparitions. A basilica was then built upon the grotto of Massabielle by M. Pey- ramale, the parish priest. In 1873, the great national French.pilgrimages were inaugurated. Three years later the basilica was consecrated and the statue was solemnly crowned. Pope Leo Xlll authorized a special office and a Mass in commemoration of the apparitions, and in 1907 Pope Pius X extended the observance of the feast to the entire Church. The hypothesis of unknown forces of nature cannot be brought forward to explain the instantaneous cures at Lourdes. It is logically untenable. As a mat- ter of fact, no natural cause, known or unknown, is sufficient to account for the marvelous cures wit- nessed at the foot of the celebrated rock where the Virgin Immaculate deigned to appear. They can only be by the intervention of God. This sanctuary has an average of one million tra- vellers, visitors, cripples and incurable each year. Every nation has sent its contingent of representa- tion to the station of Lourdes. Of the total pilgrim- ages, four hundred and sixty-four came from the four corners of the earth. They travelled by sea, by land, through deserts, over snow-peaked mountains, by every conceivable means of transportation, to visit one of the most faith-inspiring grottos in the world. 49
