S--fi l Q NATIGNAL SHRIN E Ever since Columbus reached'the shores of America in his flagship, the Santa Maria, Cnamed in honor of the Blessed Vir- ginj Catholic America yielded to no other nation in her deep devotion to the Mother of God. Since that time many churches, shrines and schools have been dedicated to Our Lady's mag- nificence. However, today in the United States, Catholics are paying to Mary one of the greatest tributes ever to be attempted. They are building for Her a national shrine, in exaltation of Mary Immaculate, the National Patroness of the United States. Work on this shrine began way back in 1884, when at the First Plenary Council of Baltimore, a priest in the diocese of Detroit first suggested the building of a shrine in honor of Mary. Action was immediately taken and on the campus of the Catholic University in Washington, the plans for the shrine were made. It was not until May T920 that Cardinal Bonzano celebrated a field Mass and blessed this famous site. On September 23 of that same year, Cardinal Gibbons laid the cornerstone of this immense structure. In the beginning rapid progress was made in the construc- tion of the Church, donations poured in from all walks of life, and finally the crypt was built. Then the depression came. Thel workers left their iobs, and the shrine ceased to grow in siz . However, after World War ll, work again was resumed.
