We promise to remember, and in gratitude proclaim Your greatness and your goodness and the glory of your name. July the twenty-sixth we'll remember your feast day, And each succeeding year in gratitude we'll pray, To keep repeating always your name throughout each year, To ask your help and guidance, and we know you'll always hear. Father Fleurant, of course. He has been our spiritual adviser forthe past three years. Whenever a difticulty arises, either small or large, Father Fleurant emerges from the shadows only to return unnoticed. It is this that inspires the confidence we, the students, feel whenever a problem needs to be talked over. His excellent training in preparation for the priest- hood was received at the Eymard Seminary in Suftern, New York. After ordination he was appointed pro- fessor of English and French. Ten years later he was sent to St. Jean's. In 1951 he became our chaplain. The following year he was Dedicated to a ervant of Mar 'lui Q made vocational director for his province. This wonderful man has brought peace to souls and freedom to the consciences of many Stanners. We know that this fact has brought joy and great satisfaction to him, and the thanks we express by this dedication will be adequately expressed only by the Divine Shepherd Himself. 1,444 i QI wa 1 H-: Q,-. .F am, J: V4 1,-Ai., ' l . 0 N , I , Yr 51'-' n xg -f'f. f . Before his eyes he could see the statue of the Immaculate Mother. As the cool rain fell on his face, his eyes opened for the first time in his life and he was able to see. The apparitions of the Blessed Virgin to a poor fourteen year old girl, Bernadette Soubirous, first occurred on the morn of February il, 1858. There were eighteen in all, the last took place on the sixteenth of July of the same year. These awe-inspiring visions of beauty and holiness were seen in the hollow of the grotto of Massabielle. Lovelier than I have ever seen, said the girl, who was the only person to see the mysterious apparitions. It was not until four years later that the bishop of the diocese declared the faithful justified in believ- ing the reality of the apparitions. A basilica was then built upon the grotto of Massabielle by M. Pey- ramale, the parish priest. In 1873, the great national French.pilgrimages were inaugurated. Three years later the basilica was consecrated and the statue was solemnly crowned. Pope Leo Xlll authorized a special office and a Mass in commemoration of the apparitions, and in 1907 Pope Pius X extended the observance of the feast to the entire Church. The hypothesis of unknown forces of nature cannot be brought forward to explain the instantaneous cures at Lourdes. It is logically untenable. As a mat- ter of fact, no natural cause, known or unknown, is sufficient to account for the marvelous cures wit- nessed at the foot of the celebrated rock where the Virgin Immaculate deigned to appear. They can only be by the intervention of God. This sanctuary has an average of one million tra- vellers, visitors, cripples and incurable each year. Every nation has sent its contingent of representa- tion to the station of Lourdes. Of the total pilgrim- ages, four hundred and sixty-four came from the four corners of the earth. They travelled by sea, by land, through deserts, over snow-peaked mountains, by every conceivable means of transportation, to visit one of the most faith-inspiring grottos in the world. 49 Aw 5 v K x -V ' 43 Q14 i v f N1 fgs 1 . - N5 'Q G. We cannot leave our grammar school, however, without mention of some outstanding names and events. Looking back, we see our notable Brother Directors, Bro. Linus Wil- liam and Bro. John Lawrence, as deserving of special thanks. The school chaplain who gave us our first Holy Communion, Rev. Father Gmur, will always live in our memories, though he was taken from us a year ago. His successor, Father Fleurant, has our gratitude for the wonderful guidance he gave. Of special import to our choir boys was the keen inter- est taken in them by Monsignor Greene. And to name each of our teachers would be to leave ourselves speechless when it came to expressing gratitude. Words cannot repay them. The events that crowd into each day at the bee- hive vie for first place in our memories. The winning honors go to the annual May devotions, without doubt, and also to this year's impressive visit of the Fatima Pilgrim Virgin. We are proud of our record in this last year of grammar school. We broke the all-time class total for the Thanksgiving food drive, came in second in the annual raffle, led the school in mission contributions, and published our own class paper, Loyalty. There were some hectic days, too. The all-important entrance exams for high schools had us all working hard, as did those final prepara- tions for the Regents Tests and graduation. The Late Show provided swift dispensation of iustice when we wandered ofT the straight and narrow and not every weekly report card went on display in the living room. All in all, we think we leave behind a fine record, one to be striven after by future eighth grades. ln parting, we extend once more our sincere and lasting thanks to all those who have made those years of growing up so happy. LaMedica IOR Brother Chanel convened one of the first sodality meetings at St. Ann's by saying, Boys, this is a Marian Year. No surprised expression came upon the faces of the so- dalists, for at St. Ann's every year is a Marian year. The Sodality of Our Blessed Virgin has again started another year successfully. The Sodality always has and always will special- ize in spiritual betterment. The Sodality's Moderator this year is Brother Chanel. No matter how engaged the Sodality is in ex- tra-curricular activities, Brother Chanel al- ways reminds his sodalists of their aims which are: To foster ardent devotion toward the Blessed Virgin Mary. To sanctify self, to sanctify one's neigh- bor, and to defend the Church. The first social project the Sodality of St. Ann's put on this year was the Halloween Dance. The night before the dance and the day of the dance, Brother Chanel and some A. lal, J. Cummings, W. Gleich, J. Sylvander P. Kelly, D. Swartz, M. Keating, J. Deasy, McGettricl1, J. Babuscio, R. DeWitt 'ODALITY of the sodalists decorated the gym beauti- fully. This dance was to decide it any more social activities sponsored by the Sodality would be held here at St. Ann's. The dance was such a success that Brother Chanel de- cided we were to have a dance every six weeks. Of course this meant much work for Brother Chanel and his sodalists, but it seems that the more work you give them the more they enioy it. The Winter Wonderland Dance held on December T9 also proved to be a success. As usual the Sodality still holds its weekly ' Mass. Besides Friday Mass, the Sodality con- trols the food drive for the Little Sisters of the Poor, the collection of magazines and the collection of old clothes for the poor. As long as there is an organization like this, the Blessed Virgin will be pleased, and the world will be a better place to live in. Jack LaVecchia K. Quinn, J. McHugh, L. Kealy, C. Knadler. Suddenly it started to whirl and fall towards the people. Falling to their knees, the multitude prayed to God and his Blessed Mother. Just when it seemed that the end was at hand, the sun suddenly resumed its accustomed place in the heavens. Such was the miracle which nonbelievers had de- manded ot the Blessed Virgin in order to prove her identity. In previous apparitions to the three children, Our Lady asked for the consecration of Russia to hefrvl - maculate Heart. The condition in which. the 'wor exists today suffices to show the need fchltthis conse- cration to Mary. Since Almighty God has peace of the world in her handsgshe will R x cc 'Ng if F ax A--ix . In this, the Marian year we would indeed be show- ing gratitude by adopting a special devotion to Mary. We must be prepared to make any sacrifice demanded by our Christian duty, and offer them in reparation for sinners and forthe future peace ofthe world. The daily Rosary, particularly the family Rosary, should be for us all a Marian devotion. We should consecrate ourselves today without reserve to her Immaculate Heart, and we should be prepared to live this consecration all our lives. Finally, we should follow the practice which Mary herself sug- fgested, the Five First Saturdays. Since that time many churches, shrines and schools have been dedicated to Our Lady's mag- nificence. However, today in the United States, Catholics are paying to Mary one of the greatest tributes ever to be attempted. They are building for Her a national shrine, in exaltation of Mary Immaculate, the National Patroness of the United States. Work on this shrine began way back in 1884, when at the First Plenary Council of Baltimore, a priest in the diocese of Detroit first suggested the building of a shrine in honor of Mary. Action was immediately taken and on the campus of the Catholic University in Washington, the plans for the shrine were made. It was not until May T920 that Cardinal Bonzano celebrated a field Mass and blessed this famous site. On September 23 of that same year, Cardinal Gibbons laid the cornerstone of this immense structure. In the beginning rapid progress was made in the construc- tion of the Church, donations poured in from all walks of life, and finally the crypt was built. Then the depression came. Thel workers left their iobs, and the shrine ceased to grow in siz . However, after World War ll, work again was resumed. When completed the entire structure will consist of twenty- eight side altars, starting on one side of the high altar round W e Church to the Bishop Shanhan altar on the other side. his Xtional 'Shrine in the future will rove to be' one of For twenty years nothing was done. 5 rea xstit V' X W er dx ic Fd ary.
