FORMULATING OUR POLICY The Student Council is the governing group of students in S.A.C.H.S. and is composed of fourteen of the most able and reliable students--two freshmen, three sophomores, four juniors and five seniors. These stu- dents cooperate with the faculty in the sponsoring and management of many school activities. They planandexecute numerous projects for the betterment ofthe school and serve the school when called upon to do so. The council sponsored an all high-school party in the fall, and the homecoming with itscolorful floats, queen contest, pep ralley and snake dance. A magazine drive, the hand book, thecadets, the polio drive and eighth grade day are other projects undertaken annually by the council. Duringtheyear the council sponsoredsixprofessional talent assemblies. John Martin was honored by being selected to serve as a discussion leader at the State Student Council Convention held at the Congress Hotel in Chicago on April 20 and 2l. Miss Trout and Wayne DeYoung also attended the Convention. The officers are: Robert Sprimont, President: Elwood Tallman, Vice- President: John Martin, Secretary: and Marguerite DeYoung, Treasurer. Miss Trout and Mr. Minton are sponsors. ALWAYS ON THEIR GUARD The Cadets which originated withintheStudent Council were organized during the latter part of September. Duties of the Cadets were to reg- ulate corridor lighting, collect absence slips from each class room, check the students passing through corridors between periods, carry messages for the office and faculty, and greet and direct visitors. Marguerite DeYoung was elected Cadet Captain and Elwood Tallmanwas elected Secretary at the first meeting. The meetings were heldmonthly. The Cadets this year were very efficient which made them a very use- ful organization. NOW IT CAN BE TOLD a We started out like all Freshmen, not knowing too much about the ad- venture we were stepping into. 'There were so many of us, seventy-seven to be exact. During our first year we had little to sayabout how the school should be run. We were the last Freshman class to be initiated in the tunnel under the school and we'll never forget some of the grue- some things down there. The next year we were back again, not quite as green and with a few less members in our class. This time it was our turn to initiate the Freshmen. Junior girls, remember when we made you wear your clothes backwards and boys, remember how silly you looked with your trousers rolled up to your knees? At the beginning of the year we chose our class rings and of course we thought our rings were better than any we had ever seen. This was our Junior year, theyear we took over the candy booth so we could give the Seniors the prom and banquet. We used a Mexican theme for both occasions. We were very happy to have the Homecoming queen, Carole Trudeau, chosen from our class. - Finally, we started the year we had all been waiting for, our Senior year. We started off by selling football and basketball pins to make money forour Senior trip. For the second time the Homecoming queen was chosen fromourclass. This time it was Joyce Styck. The Seniors spon- sored a TV Talent Show in December. Two of the high lights of our last year are the Senior play and the Senior trip, but the greatest occasion of all is graduation. iDuring all four years our class has had several boys on the varsity teams. We are really proud of these boys and are sure they will be missed as well as each member of the Senior Class. . I WITNESSED THE CLASS WILL Earl Ahrens, will my typing ability to Fred Hinrichs. We thought that this was a big building where there were many boys and girls that were not going to pay any attention to us and we would have to make our way alone, but we were all wrong. The other boys and girls were very cooper- ative in helping us find our classes and different rooms. After we got to know our way around the building, we elected our class officers. They were: President, Delbert Trobaugh: Vice-President, Gerald Kendel:Secre- tary, Helen Koopmans:Treasurer, Audry McHie. Our class sponsors were Mr. VanRheeden and Mrs. Woods. As the year rolled by we became sophomores. We tried to treat the Freshmen as good as we were treated and to help us do that we elected Annadell Reichert, President: Alvin Miller, Vice-President: Darlene Cyrier, Secretary: Ralph Minor, Treasurer. The Sponsors were Mr. Van- Rheeden and Miss Dodd. In I950 we were juniors and on our three-fourths mark. By this time we thought we knew more than theteachers, but we soon found out differ- ently so we settled down to make this the best Junior class S.A.H.S. ever had. Our Junior classofficers wereas follows: AndySalm, President: John Martin, Vice-President: June Kassman, Secretary: Pat Hebert, Treasur- er. Mr. VanRheeded, Mr. Jenkins, and MissHolland were our sponsors. The Junior play, 'Meet Me In St. Louis,n was given in November draw- ing a record breaking attendance. Next came the Junior-Senior prom and banquet that really kept us busy for a while, but the class pulled through and they were both a big success. As the year closed we can look back on it as a successful year. ANYTHING GOES IN THE FACULTY-JUNIOR GAME Ist 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Top Row Row Row! Row Row Row LEFT! A few days later three others registered. The following officers were elected early in the year. President, Patsy LaFond: Vice-President, Rodney Franklin: Sec- retary, Bertie Bradt: and Treasurer, Pat Therien. The student council representatives are Mary Cox and Ozzie Edwards. Jimmy Sprimontwas a carry over member. The Sophomores were quite pleased in taking second place in the Homecoming float. Pat Therien was placed on the varsity cheerleaders when one of the other cheerleaders moved. November 2l, was initiation day. The Freshmen girls had to wear Daisy Mae costumes while the boys wore Little Abner clothes. At night a party was held in which the sophomores entertained the Freshmen. Everyone had fun. Refreshments were served after the games. In the spring the Sophomores ordered their class rings. BRAVE NEW WORLD G1 September l, 1950, seventy-nine Freshmen enrolled in St. Anne High School and bravely faced the tests and tasks that are a part of high school life. Within a couple of weeks they elected Marjorie Martin President, Kay Beaupre Vice-President, Richard Hicks Secretary, and Laverne Martin Treasurer. It is inter- esting to note that out'of a class of seventy-nine students a sister and brother were elected class officers. Miss Trout, Mr. Stabler, and Miss Hoppe were appointed our class sponsors. The Freshman representatives to the student council were Jackie Brown and Robert Berry. The Freshman class gained recognition early in the year by placing first in the homecoming float contest with the theme We Can Lick 'Em, and by having a Freshman homeroom win the anti-vandalism slogan contest. On November 21, 1950 we were entertained by the Sophomores at a Sadie Hawkins Day Party and were required to wear our Daisy Mae and Little Abner costumes during the day. At the annual Father and Son Banquet in April, Dads were entertained by the boys. Following a delicious dinner, a tour of the new Agriculture department was made. LEARNING AND TEACHING This is the second year of the Future Teachers of America. The club elected officers early in the school term. They were as follows: President, Carolyn Marthg Vice-President,' Elwood Tallmang Secretary, Norman Kremer, and Treasurer, Annadell Ikichert. Mr. Minton is the advisor. The club has proved to be a lot of help when a teacher is absent from school. Stu- dents have gotten a lot of experience from practice teaching. THEY'RE LETTER WINNERS The Varsity Club is an organization of all boys and only those boys who have earn- ed their varsity letters in sports in this high school. The activities of the Varsity Club are few because of the small number belonging to the club. Some of the activities of the Varsity Club during the past few years include hay- rides, box socials, skating parties. This year the club was headed by Wayne DeYoung, President, Alvin Miller, Vice- Presidentg and Gene Lesch, Secretary and Treasurer. These boys were helped in their work by our two coaches, Mr. Stabler and Mr. Scott. THE GIRLS PLAY T00 Not only boys get to play, but girls also do. This year we are unfortunate that we are not able to have as long a time for activities during noon hours, as we have had in the years before. There are seventy- five athletic girls in the G. A. A. Thirty- three of these girls are new members. The officers were elected last year before school was closed for the sumner vaca- tion. They are: President, Carole Trudeau, Vice-President, Annadell .Reichertg Secre- tary, Genola Baker, Treasurer, Carolyn Marth. We have a wonderful advisor, Miss Donita Von Seggen. Last suxnner Carole Trudeau and Genola Baker represented our club at state canp. Our club was represented at the various pl ay days by groups of ten girls. Throughout the year parties were held in the Gym with the popular sport being bombardment. New members were initiated and awards were given out near the end of the year. All our members follow the purposes and goals of the G. A. A. by displaying an interest in athletics, clean play, good sportsmanship and team work. THEY PUT ON THE SHOWS The National Thespian Society is an educational organization for students estab- lished for the advancement of dramatic arts. The aims of the society are to establish and advance standards of excellence in all phases of dramatic arts, and to create an active and intelligent interest in dramatic arts among boys and girls in the high schools. In order to be eligible for membership in the Thespian Society a student must earn a certain number of points. These points are earned by participating in plays, assembly programs, speech contests and other dramatic events. The officers for the coming year are: Annadell Reichert, President, John Martin, Vice-Presidentg Darlene Cyrier, Secretary, Janet Janes, Treasurer, and June Kassman, Scribe. Miss Irene Clausen is sponsor. June Kassman, John Martin, Marguerite DeYoung, Robert Martin, and Darlene Cyrier went to the District Speech Contest at Bradley. June Kassman got first place, and Robert Martin got third place. They then went to Ottowa to the Sectional Speech Contest. Q BASKETBALL SEASON At the begirming of the season Mr. Scott looked forward, to a pretty fair season. With eight out of the first ten men back we had a lot of material, but we knew it was going to be rough trying to match the record that the redbirds set the year before. As the season went along it seemed as though the boys were going to go places. But as basketball goes there were times when there seemed to be something missing, while at others the team really looked good. Although St. Anne loses several good players like Dick Barriball, Marvin Sikma, Gene Lesch, Elwood Tallman, Wayne DeYoung, and Dick Lavoie, we have more that we be- lieve can step right into their places and do just as good a job. We had a record of nineteen wins and eleven loses but are looking forward to a better year next year. As Mr. Scott always says, We might have been out played but we were never out fought. The redbirds led by Dick Barriball captured a third place trophy in the K. V. C. Tournanent and second place trophy in the Morris Holiday Tournament. MORRI S TOURNAMENT ' We entered the Holiday Tourney during the Christmas Holidays, our first gane being with a small but very fast team, Leland, After a very tough battle we came through with a score of 55-4-0. Our next game was with St. Paul who, from all reports, was supposed to beat St. Anne. But with hard fighting fromplayers like Dick, Muff, Gene, Andy, and Elwood, we won the game 50-45. After that win we entered the Semi-finals and was up against a tall and fast team, Morris. This game started slow but as the game went on the boys found themselves and won the game 43-24. This brought us into the finals against Lockport, a tall and inspired team which was one of the better rated teams in the state. We lost this game by a score of 58-37 but cane home with a second place trophy. K. V. C. TOURNEY Later in the year we entered the K. V. C. Tournament, our first game being against Herscher, in which we won 57-39. We went on from there to beat Gilman 55-48. This brought us up against Bradley only to suffer a defeat of 74-50 and put us in the lower bracket to play Grant Park for third place. We defeated them by a score of 69-60 for third pl ace. wfigxm lst Row Top Row: lst Row: Top Row: Ist Row: 2nd Row Top Row: THEY KNOW HOW T0 HANDLE THE BALL First Team Richard Kisiel, Mr. Scott, Richard Barriball, Alvin Miller, Norman Kremer. FOOTBALL Mr. Stabler started out the season with thirty-eight boys and stepped right into hard and vigorous practice. Wayne DeYoung and Dick Barriball were elected co-captains for the year. Injuries hurt the team pretty badly. At times we had two players out at one time. We tied for third place in the K. V. C. Tournament with Bradley. We were fortu- nate to have five players on the two all conference teams. Wayne DeYoung and Dick Barriball made the first team and Elwood Tallman, Andy Salm, and Alvin Miller made the second team. The all conference teams are picked out by the five coaches of the conference. These two teams were invited to a professional football game in Chicago between the bears and Lions sponsored by the Kankakee Daily Journal. After the game we were treated to a dinner. A lot of our players this year are seniors and we will loose them this year. Even though we will lose them, we have a fine bunch of boys who are capable of playing just as good football. BASEBALL Twenty- four candidates answered the call of Coach Scott for baseball last spring. Braving snow, rain, dust storms and an epidemic of sore arms, the diamond apparatus were molded into a team of six short but painful practices. Five ganes were played in all with St. Anne defeating Chebanse in ice and flurries of snow 5-4. Weather conditions were more pleasant when St. Anne beat Bradley 6-3. St. Patrick defeated St. Anne after the game had been postponed twice at bird park by a score of 10-1. St. Anne then lost tofleddick in the battle of the dust bowl by a score of ll-9. Momence behind the futle ball pitching of Johnny Smith stopped the Cardinals 6-2 in the final game. Hitting was the greatest weakness of the 1950 tem HS not enmlgh time is available for hitting practice in the early spring. TRACK The 1950 track team had only four lettermen this season. The four were Don Hoekstra, seniorg Stanley LaFond, Delbert Trobaugh, Alvin Miller, ,Sophomoresg and William Tetter, Freshman. Don Hoekstra was captain for the track team. The tean was only able to hold two Varsity meets and three Freshman-Sophomore meets. The reason we did not have more is that our track was not in good enough condition to hold meets on. Therefore, the only meets we could take part in had to be meets held at other schools. The team was assisted at all times by the coach, John Stabler. You know that Mr. Sailors really has pepped that band up. When I was out there watching those football genes on the field and band in their uniforms really added life to the game. When we were celebrating our homecoming, with its floats and parades, it would have been dull without the band marching and heading the parade. Besides all these other things in September and November, they had time enough to get a concert ready. One day when I was flying near town I glanced down and saw a poster telling about the Fall Concert. You can bet your life I didn't miss that. It was a different kind of concert though. The Speech department, choir, and band were combined in a radio show. When the band started off with 'The Thunder, I knew I was in for a real treat. Also the choir did justice to their record. They sang 'Down in the Valley, All Through the Night, and Let Us Break Bread Together. The band also played Blue Tail Fly, and The Magnus Overture. I bet the people of St. Anne are really proud of their band at the basketball games. With the Record St. Anne has for its basketball squad, I think the band should also feel proud because I think along with the cheering section, they help win many games. 'When it cane around the last days before Christmas vacation, the band and choir ap- peared before an assembly and rendered many fine tunes. The band played Bells of St. Mary, 'Winter Wander Land, Jingle Bells. The choir sang along with the entire student body many Christmas carols including Silent Night, and H1dolph'llieRed Nose Reindeer. For the next few months the band and choir started rehearsal for the festival and a concert which was given March l5, 1951 in the gym. The band members wore their uniforms and the members of the choir wore their robes. Some numbersplayed by the band were 'Ode to Music, by Chopin, a novelty, The Three Bears, and Meoallion Overture. 'lhe program also included a group of popular numbers. The choir sang as an opener, It Might As Well Be Spring, followed by 'With aHey And A Hi And a Ho Ho Ho, Harbor Lights, and 'In a Monastery Garden. Also in this concert Marilyn Meier sang a solo and a quartet appeared. When the Spring rolled around the choir ventured north to Bradley and took part in a festival of beautiful music. There were boys' choirs and girls' choirs made up of all the school choirs in this district. There was also a mixed choir made up of selected voices. Everyone who went really enjoyed the festival. Well it's been a good year for both parts of music classes. Now it's time to close. So until you turn the page, goodby. I hope you have enjoyed this trip much as I have enjoyed being your gui for the school year I950-5I 3 Quin 5 h ..- 1 Q ..
