Shalott-and After HE long, crystal mirror reflected the enchanting picture of a girl, lovely in a bouffant pastel evening dress, with long white kid gloves, and dainty gold slippers. On her graceful white throat lay a single strand of pearls and in her shining hair gleamed a white orchid. Wide, honest eyes, glistening with anticipation gazed from the glass, then smiled a little doubtfully as the first strains of the graduation march were heard. The girl turned quickly from the mirror and found her place among her classmates. Long, long ago another girl sat before a mirror-the lovely Lady of Shalott, but the reflection in the mirror was quite different. In her glass she saw no smiling face, but the s-hadows of the world, the highway winding down to Camelot, the whirling river, tho bustling town, the laughing market girl, a curly shepherd-lad, all the phases of life. And moving thro' a mirror clear That hangs before her all the year, Shadows of the world appear. There she sees the highway near Winding down to Camelot. Living in a world of misty apparitions and visions, she was doomed to watch life pass by her in a mirror. Everything men cherish slipped from her view as sielntly and quickly as it came. In that one brief moment, she glimpsed only the surface of the treasured things of life, laughter, kindness, sorrow, happiness, even love, which flitted by like misty shadows never to be fully understood. Shall we say that she was doomed never to know the sweetness of love, because she dared not take upon herself its sacred obligations? Life was within her grasp, yet she dared not seize it to enjoy it. No wonder she complained, I am half sick of shadowsf, How unlike unfortunate Lady of Shalott is the modern Catholic graduate. It is the old, old difference between shadow and substance, the idealistic and the realistic. Our modern maid, whose eyes have been unsealed by the light of divine grace, has dared to break the mirror, dared to make the dreams of the enchanted world come true. Honest and undeceived, with a fresh courage, she has seized what was behind the mirror. Her eyes have not skimmed the surface of life, they have penetrated into it. Shadowy things are not for her. Joy and sorrow, friendship and love, she knows and understands, for they are her companions. Turning resolutely away from the mirror of life, the Catholic high school graduate faces reality, the world will not slip by her. Unlike the weave before the glass she has accepted the challenge of Sister Madeleva in MHl'gi77dli1lI71J Girl, let your mirror break, your web blow wide, Nail love's bright flag with life's upon your prow.
