F1111 Atchley Thomrsvn lxne R Powell Xlxoodrufl Cufrlanl Sterner Barnard Brown Mr XX'ergand fairly rc nd u Vest 'llmlgu XXest XXrlex Donoxan Bear C' Coward Young K McCullough VABSITY BASEBALL 1958 The baseball season of 1958 although not successful from a won loss standpornt proved to be a one frlled wrth anxrety and excrtement 'lhe first game was a home contest wrth Xwrlmrngton Irrends It was played only a few d ys after the SAS hoys had returned from Sprrng Vac rtron and the lack of practrce at workrne, together as 1 team showed up The Wrlmrngton team had lrttle trouble as they won the lop srded contest by a score of 17 1 I'our days later the Sarnts entertarned Landon School of Washrngton D C 'Ihe Landon te am was not as strong as they had been rn preyrous years and the S A S boys won thc game 7 5 'Ihrs was the first IAC game of the season and upon wrnnrng rt readrly SAS had hrgh hopes of takrng the IA C Champronshrp for the second year runnrng The follow rng Tuesday the team traveled to Wfrlmrngton to play a second game wrth I'rrends School Thrs trme the game turned out to he a even match and rt wasnt untrl the tenth rnnrng that Frrends managed to come out on top The seore w as 4 3 Next Saturday the Red traveled to Baltrmore to take on the Grlman School 'Ihe SAS hrttrng was on the weak srde rn thrs game and Grlman w on 7 1 'Ihe next game was also away but not so drstant The SAS team drove down state and played a thrrller wrth Smyrna Hrgh School amrd the lrght poles rn the Smyrna dramond Thrs game proyed to be the second one run loss for SAS the score berng 6 5 Don Sterner had the Smyrna players baffled for a whrle w rth hrs knuckle hall but desprte thrs and a thrrllrng SAS rally rn the seyenth rnnrng that netted four runs Smyrna came out on top The followrng Saturday the Srdwell Frrends team came up from XX'ashrngton to play the Sarnts rn the hosts second IAC game of the season Thrngs looked fine for the home team up untrl the last rnnrng w hen an error wrth two men out enabled the vrsrtors to tre the game up at 5 5 The game lasted for two extra rnnrngs when Srdwcll pushed seven runs 56 across the plate rn a wrld rnnrng and walked away wrth the game 'lhe next game was played up at XX'esttown Frrends caool 1 x as the loser thrs tr by a 5 7 scare Ihc game was hrghlrehted by Captarn Don XX oodruff s pl ryrn., shortstop for Coley Brown w ho rnyurecl hrs lcnce rn a freak accrdent durrng warmup Carl Bear and Don Sterner shared the prtchrn honors and Ben Powell hrt the hrst SAS homerun of the season The next game was played on the home held before about seventy rrls who had come to the SAS campus for the Sprrng Dance Ihe vrsrtors were St Alban s School from XX ashrngton rnothcr IAC team Ihe Sarnts banged out fourteen hrts to wrpe up the vrsrtors 17 8 After thrs game the Sarnts found themselves up agunst stronger competrtron as they bowed to a strong Tow er Hrll team from XX rlmrngton 9 0 The next trrp was the longest one of the season for the SAS team They traveled to Hagerstown Md w here they met another IA C team St Iamcs Thrs w as the second ten rnnrng game of the season for the Sarnts and thrs trmc SAS came out on the long end of the 5 7 score Ihe followrng game turned out to be another of the m ny one run games that plagued the Sarnts throughout the year Smyrna came up to SAS and went home wrth a tense 3 7 vrctory Contrnurng rn therr three game home stretch S A S next played Caesar Rodney Hrgh School from down state Don XX'oodruff turned rn a fine day of prtchrng and the rnheld of XXrley Brown Young and Sterner p a ed a hnc game Bcn Powell hrt hrs second and t rr homeruns After Caesar Rodney the Srrnts played Dover Hrgh School and lost another close one 5 7 For the next game Brg Red traveled to Hockessrn to play Sanford Prep Overconficlence on the part of the St Andrew s players accounted for a 4 7 Sanford vretory The final game of the season was plryed at home over Alumnr NX'eekend Arch mere prtchrng foxed the SAS team as the lrtter could Collect only three hrts Archmere won the game 9 1 1, vu an .
