EEN' Flu! nu Rmland Cru SA Sl md :au B yntm Shenlt Fitchett Appell Xlsalltc Harris Huhclt Th mas flfillrrl Mr Vkashhurn CIIIJ VARSITY CREW 1958 The first SAS varsity eight with four returning letter men rovs ed to an impressive 3 and 1 record this year The varsity crew opened the season by splitting a regatta with the Hun School of Princeton New jersey The second boat bow Wrgglesvorth txxo jones three Hammer four Atalay five Price six Appell seven Vlfilke stroke Kniffin and cox Brmton jumped to an early lead and increased it to yym by three lengths in 6 07 In the first cight race Hun capitalized on a good racing start to take an early lead of a deck length over our first eight which vsas composed of five Fitchett six Harris seven Hullck stroke Thomas and cox Rowland SAS pulled up steadily and by the half way mark mas M of a length ahead In the last quarter Hun lumped the stroke and pulled au ay by a foot in the last stroke of the race to min in 5 39 On April 25 the same SAS first boat raced the Lni versity of Pennsylvania Freshmen on Noxentoyyn The S A S eight sprang to a halt' boat length lead on the racing start and then pulled steadily ayyay to vxin by three lengths in 5 46 On the Saturday of dance vteekend under ideal yyeather conditions the SAS oarsmen now rowing in fours were defeated on the Noxentoyyn by Washington and Lee School of Alexandria Va Our second four bovs Hindle tvto Harris three Walke stroke Shenk and cox Brunton fell behind by IM, lengths during the racing start but pulled up vtrthm a length of W 84 L in the third quarter to lose in 6 O0 WHL s time yyas 5 56 Our first four bom Boyn ton tvro Mitchell three Huhck stroke Thomas and cox Rowland suffered the same fate as the second boat falling 52 behind by IW lengths at the start They made a bid at the half closing the gap to one length but yyent on to lose in 5 57 by one length XV 8cL s time xy as 5 54 All four boats broke the previous fours record for the Noxentovyn of 6 O0 The folloxxmg yyeek back in cights the SAS oarsmen iiced txyo freshmen crcxys from Princeton Our second eight mth Hindle ind Mitchell in positions boyx and six respec tively lost to Prmcetons third 150 pound Freshmen creyx by fllf, lengths The first S A S eight with Wfalke replacing Hindle and Appell replacing Mitchell came from a deck Freshmen heavyweight crevy by three hfths of a second at the hnish The time for the victorious SAS eight was 5 11 1 ncxx Noxentoxxn Pond record for eights On the following Monday at the invitation of the US Naval Academy the first SAS eight royyed the first 150 pound Plebe boat on the Severn River at Annapolrs The SAS oarsmen surprised everybody including themselves by taking an early lead and maintaining it throughout the race to yum by three quartets of a length in 5 22 On May 18th our hrst four boxx Boynton two Mitchell three Hulick stroke 'lhomas and cox Rovtland yourneycd to Philadelphia f r the Kings Cup race of the Stotcsbury Regatta on the Schuylkill S A S hnished fourth May '74 the same hrst four returned again to Phila delphia this time for the American Scholastic Championship Regatta on the Schuylkill SAS looking for a chance to redeem themselves got off to a good start to finish third in 5 57 beating Xx,1Sl'I1I'lLf0I1 and Lee the tc im that had beatcn them on a previous occasion -. 1 fa ll ii i 5 Ii 1 its 5 , T . , , . 4 3 ' ff I ra 5 l I A aio., rf-H ' ig!
