VARSITY SGCCER The St Andrew s soccer team under coaches Weigand and Goodell and its co captains Brian Fisher and Art Haycock compiled a 2 5 2 record thrs year For their first game the Saints traveled to Haverford where they downed the Haver ford JV s 20 Scoring goals were Haycock and Fisher Haycocks being from the penalty line and Fishers from within the penalty area In the second game of the season the Saints were de feated by Westtown Friends 10 After scoring rn the first penalty shot by Haycock rn the fourth quarter Playing its first game at home the soccer team tied Wilmington Friends 44 Ahead 2 0 at the half the Saints became over confident In the second half the Quakers took a 3 2 lead With ten seconds remaining in the game Haycock botted rn the tying goal St Andrews scored in the first of two overtime periods but Friends again tied the game rn the second and final overtime perrod The Saints won their second game of the season by defeat ing Phelps 3 1 Scoring goals for SAS were Deschamps Adams and Bill Long Phelps lone goal came in the fourth quarter when a Phelps man headed the ball into the goal after goalie Harris knocked the ball down from the cross bar The Red s fifth game ended rn a 4 2 defeat at the hands of the University of Delaware Freshmen Trailing 4 O early in the second half coach Weigand began pouring substitutes into 42 the game From that point on SAS dominated the play by outhustlmg and outplaying the Frosh team jrm Wiley scored both goals rn the fourth period for the Saints Traveling to Newark for a return game wrth the Delaware Frosh the Saints again found themselves on the short end of a 2 0 game Allen the Delaware center forward who had been the chief factor in their previous victory over SAS once again lead the Delavt areans to victory On November 4 the team went to Wilmington where forced to play 1 defensive game the entire day because they were scored upon early in the game Playing their best game of the season the Saints held the undefeated and once scored upon Westtown team to a 2 2 tie Bchmd 1 0 at the half the Samts got back in the game after Fisher scored early in the thlrd period Behind 7 1 late in the last quarter the Big Red scorcd when Deschamps booted m a lon, QIOSS field pass from I-laycock 'lhe score w as deadlocked ifter two five minutc overtimes md the game was declared a tie On November 14 thc Saints lost their last game of the season to Phelps by a 3 I score The Saints lcad 10 at the half but Phelps came back wtth two goals in the third quarter and a third goal in the closing mmutes of the game to win the contest e l 1 S v - y -1 .
