S. A, S. PUBLICATIONS DUE To Tinancial diTTiculTies, The Three school publicaTions, The Andrean, The Cardinal, and The Criss Cross, were This year combined To Torm S. A. S. PublicaTions. This arrangemenT was eTTecTed in order To simpliTy The c1uesTion oT adverTisemenTs, To pro- vide Tor a smaller and more eTTicienT sTaTT, and To reduce The sTudenT cosT Tor all Three uniTs. AT TirsT iT was ThoughT ThaT There would have To be a serious curTailmenT in The size oT all Three oT The publicaTions, buT noTeworThy managemenT in The business deparT- menT by John Wason and RiclcerT Lewis has provided much unexpecTed revenue. STanley WoodworTh, managing ediTor, is mainly responsible Tor The success OT The new sysTem. His leadership has been pracTical and inTelligenT, qualiTies which have oTTen been lacking in The pasT. Ted AusTin as News EdiTor and George Jones as SporTs EdiTor oT The Cardinal also Turned in brillianT iobs. As Tor The Andrean, mosT oT The crediT There goes To l-lenry Gibson, PeTer Brown and Powell PierpoinT. Their FaculTy advisor has done a Tine job oT making The An- drean whaT iT is Today. THE CRES-CRGSS CLUB PresenTecl during The SixTh Eorm Dance Week-end, The Two one-acT plays Two Crooks and a Ladyl' and The LosT Silk l-laT were a greaT success. Under The able di- recTing oT Mr. Large and lvlr. Vor- hees, and The leadership oT Bob Browne, The enTire perTormance was excellenTly done. Plans Tor nexT year are noT con1pleTe as yeT, buT They will probably include one Three-acT play. THE YACHT CLUB The l938 season, hanmpered by bad weaTher condiTions and a lack oT wind, was raTher unsuccessiful. The races were reduced To one. The I939 sailors, under Commo- dore Bill Clarke, are ThereTore look- ing Torward To a rnore Tayorable season. SPORTS REVIEW l-lE l938 Crew season may be deemed a success even Though The gig did noT bring back The King's Cup. The Tinal reckoning showed Tour vicTories and Two deTeaTs, boTh oT These in regaTTas. The varsiTy Tour beaT Penn CharTer, GermanTown, McDonough, and The Penn Erosh. They losT The King's Cup by Two-TiTThs oT a second in a race ThaT had The enTire gallery roaring. ln The lnTer-ScholasTics aT PrinceTon, a second and a Third were garnered againsT sTiTT compeTiTion. Sailor Bill Clarke was'elecTed capTain oT The '39 Crew, and wiTh eighT leTTermen back, The season looks very promising. The '39 WresTling Team, under undeTeaTed capTain Jack Menzies, wiTh Tour wins and Three deTeaTs, proved one oT The besT yeT. The WilmingTon Y.M.C.A. eTTecTed our TirsT deTeaT oT The season. The second maTch, againsT an experienced George School Team, also wenT on The wrong side oT The ledger. Then The Tide Turned and ST. Albans was Taken, 26-8. A week 'aTer, anoTher vicTory was scored Tor Coach Cam- eron's grapplers againsT Episcopal. Travelling away To Overbrook Blind School, The maTmen meT Their Third and lasT deTeaT oT The season. The Tollowing maTch was perhaps The besT ST. Andrew's has ever seen. WiTh every man giving his uTmosT, The S. A. men emerged vicTorious over a sTrong buT over-conTider-T Lawrenceville Team. An easy vicTory over Tome clirnaxed The greaT season. The baskeTbaII season did noT show any specTacular resulTs as regards scores. Though The Team did noT win any oT iTs games, sTill a greaT many oT Them were losT only by close margins. The spiriT oT The boys under capTain Ervin was aT all Times excel- lenT. NexT year's Team, led by capTain-elecT Ridge Clark, should be a much sTronger and more poised ouTTiT. I938's baseball opened on a hopeTul noTe wiTh a vicTory over Eerris. From Then on The Team had iTs ups and downs, and The Tinal counT was seven wins eighT losses. The inTield was air-TighT, and wiTh Bud Harris, Charly Murphy, George Buckner, and Ken Ervin as hurlers, The season may be counTed a success. The loss oT eighT leTTermen will be a serious handicap To The coming Team, buT The greaTesT hole To be Tilled is ThaT leTT by Big Ed Eddy on The receiving end oT The baTTery. The varsiTy Tennis season in '38 proved To be a very successTuI one, wiTh six wins and only one deTeaT. The combine oT AusTin, Brooks, Turner, Reade, l-lousTon, Bare, and Turnbull was a powerTul one, and wiTh only Three oT This group gone, The coming season should come ouT equally as well as The lasT. 29
