The Equestrian team played host to the IHSA National Championship in May. Though, we don ' t know at this writing if they won or not, we do know that last year they finished 3rd in the nation in the event. Top riders for St. Andrews included: Katie Martin, Margaret Fuller. Beth White, Cyndi Adams and many more. To give you an idea of how tough these riders are, consider the fact that they ' ve been in the running for the national championship for four years now. The other colleges that consistently compete well in the nationals, include the Uni versity of Virginia and Sweet Briar College. That ' s not bad company for our people. Equestrian 31 St. Andrews Women ' s Volleyball team finished the season with a 1-10 record Their victory came against Greensboro College. Kristi Kluegel, the No. 1 seed, finished with a 3-2 record in the conference and 3-6 overall to lead the team. Women ' s Tennis 32 Women ' s Tennis Women ' s Tennis 33 An AU-American Year For Volleyball In 1985, people said St. Andrews ' volleyball team was one of the best the Dixie Conference ever produced. That team went 26-18; the 1987 season saw St. Andrews go 30-12, win the Dixie Conference with an 11-1 mark and produce the program ' s first Ail-American and two All-South players. Senior Lori Stroud was named to the 1987 NCAA Division 111 All-America (2nd) team. Stroud and teammate Kristi Kluegel, a junior from Cape Coral, Fla., were named to the All-South team. As a pair, the two dominated the net for St. Andrews. Joining Stroud and Kluegel on the All-Dixie Conference team for St. Andrews was senior Margaret Fuller. Head coach JoAnn Williams was also named Coach of the Year for the Dixie Conference. At the end of the season, Williams lifetime volleyball record at St. Andrews was 239-181. 34 Volleyball VoUeyball 35 36 Soccer Soccer wins More in ' 87 For the first time in five years, St. Andrews won a soccer match against a Dixie Conference opponent — Averett College in Danville, Va. Tacked on to a 2-0 d efeat of Hampden-Sydney College and a 6-0 blanking of Gardner Webb College and A 6-11 final record, it was the most successful season for the Knights in several years. This year St. Andrews increased its scoring ft-om 14 goals last season to 25 this year. Ten players scored goals, showing the improving depth of the Knights, according to coach Lorenzo Canalis. Glenn Garrison, a senior from Anderson, S.C., led the team with five goals. Chris Walker had four goals and freshmen Phil Nolette, ftrom Fort Washington, Md., had three goals and two assists. Soccer 37 II Simons Says: We ' re Better At press time, St. Andrews ' men ' s basketball team was in the midst of the conference race, with a 6-2 record. Before the season, head coach Mark Simons said to the press, we ' ll be better. That prophesy came true in a big way, as the Knights recovered from being doormats the year before and defeating everybody in the conference at least once. Balanced scoring was the name of the game for the Knights. Four players were scoring in double figures on the average: David Simons, 12 per game, Teddy Holloway, 11.5 per game, Wendell Staton, 10.5 per game and Eric Shelton, 10.5 per game. Like Simons says: we ' re better. 38 Men ' s Basketball Holloway, Simons, Staton Score, Score, Score! Men ' s Basketball 39 Lady Knights Scrappy In 1987-88 Paced by junior KeWanda Walters and sophomore forward Malinda Edmonds, 1987-88 was proving to be an exciting season for the Lady Knights at press time. The Lady Knights had already beaten conference opponents Methodist College, Averett College and won their own tournament. Malinda Edmonds, Mo as her teammates call her, was averaging 15.1 points per game and 9.6 rebounds. Kewanda Walters was the team ' s leading free throw shooter, with an 81 percent average Deborah Ayers was the team ' s leading assist person, with 6.7 per contest. 40 Women ' s Basketball am ■OHI HIHii m Women ' s Basketball 41 The Best S.A.
