We sing to keep the rhythm of our rowing. 14 I 15 St. Andrews is a world of whirling dimensions captured in reflective flask. 16 S.A. had one thing no other college or university I looked at had — you. St. Andrews is a place where we can be ourselves. It ' s given me all the opportunities to do all of ttie thing ' s I haven ' t been able to do before. I ' m excited about my future. Ridiculous Registration our freshman year in the small gym, we sought each other out m selecting SAS groups, knowing nothing about C and C but rumors We wondered and wandered and watched the changes . Hart leaving, Arnold resigning. Doubles moving, Claytor coming in to take Santa-Manas place, McNair going back to school, Perkinson presiding over the bricks going down in front of the Student Union, the Kings Mountain renovation into Pate Hall, the concrete coming up on Chapel Island, the turnovers who took over and are taking us in different directions. The gifts of money and motion have seen us through these changing years and though we are often thankless, we have given and moved, also. From the McGaw chair to the arrival of the first coots, what it all comes down to is the following pages. We are graduates, prospective graduates, people who have that final course to take to get out and get on with the ridiculous and real world. 20 Ivy Susan Baker Piano Bennettsville, SC Quillarene Baker Psychology Washington, DC 21 Yana Serita Banks Chemistry Biology Reidsville, NC Rebecca Louise Copeland English Ful uol a, Japan Catiierine DeButts Bell Anthropology Sociology Versailles, KY 22 Arthur Bowman Physical Education Wadesboro, NC Dimitra Grant Politics Business Administration Atlanta, GA Marie Louise Buffaloe Religion Garner, NC 23 James Blair Bumgardner Jr. Theatre Modern Language (Spanish) Conway, SC .. - - i J ' i n J mm i ' w Kb ' ' r 1 ; ' J ' ■Si A E|Bf rfi r If . You just have to be able to take advantage of the right ones. The campus is beautiful. The professors are great, but it ' s one helluva unorganized situation. ' 37 Freshmen turn to seniors; the years unfold, memories add to experience and unions are made. Some say these are the best years. Some say the worst, but we will all remember. P. Parkinson, Jr. Learning is primary. As John Stuart IVIill said over a century ago, Men are men (and, he would say today, ' women are women ' ) before they are lawyers or physicians, or merchants, or manufacturers, and if you mal e them capable and sensible men they will make themselves capable and sensible lawyers and politicians . . . Career preparation is no longer determined by a fixed set of vocational skills to be made obsolete by technology and time. A trained and critical mind, a sensitive and free imagination, and confident and articulate self-expression are skills ever in demand. St. Andrews seeks tor its students this rust-proof preparation for careers. However, education must equip us to want more and to do more than merely earn a living. St. Andrews expects of its students liberal learning as well as skills development, and cultural awareness as well as career planning. St. Andrews seeks to develop valuing — a process of insight, judgement, commitment, and in its highest expressions, wisdom. St. Andrews invites you to join in a bold experiment in Christian higher education. 63 64 FACULTY ADMINISTRATION 65 James Bruce Frye Vice President for Developmeni Robert B. How do you begin to thank friends who have worked without praise for months on problems which they never knew existed? Many of this past year ' s events have been ommitted because of the time involved in trying to get this book out on time. We hope that your years here will flood your memory banks enough that you will be understanding of the shortcomings in coverage — thank-you. David Swanson, Mike Snider, Lisa Wollman, Knight Chamberlain, Bob Crownover are to be thanked for their help in getting pictures of all the moving targets on campus, i.e. students, seniors, and faculty. Thank-you also to Marsha Lamm and Rooney Coffman who could be depended on to pull their files and give us the sports and administration shots when we needed them, which was always in a hurry. Russell Strong, Advisor, and Dr. William Loftus, Chairman of the Student Life Committee who helped me through the hassels plus gave me support in all areas are to be added to the long list of people I couldn ' t have done without. Curtis Leonard, Robert Poston, Johnnie Heiser and Charlotte Graham were helpful in cropping, lay-outs, typing copy and staying out of trouble at the same time and to each i say a special thank-you. A special section should be done on Marion Bowden without whose patience and pencil this might still be buried under six feet of dust in the office. Also, to Craig Lemmons who along with Marion took lay-outs to the lab when he should have been breaking beakers. The girls in my suite, Mrs, Pete, Mickey Richey, and countless others gave me much moral support. Those of you whose names I haven ' t the space to include nor the heart to leave out . . . you know who you are — and to you I am especially indebted. Thank-you. It couldn ' t have been done without you. Judi 95 HUNTER PUBLISHING COMPANY MR JOE AlUGOOD, WILSON, NORTH CAROLINA ■• tf . ' it rflpMWHWjaaid ti.v
