w. St. Andrews 1975 BBH HHW Approaching the end, somehow still wondering why it all began. I ' ve learned but I ' ve learned better ways to learn. Unprepared to act, Yet knowing the world must change, I go forth at least with the inner strength gained from St. Andrews (in one sense) The opportunity to relate somewhat spontaneously and freely to the people around me and my attempts to save this place are exciting and yet, contradictory. Nevertheless, here I stand. Yes, here I stand. He had perfect control of those who came to hear him-carefully setting them up with his comical introduction and then leveling them with the message of his talk. Several times I felt as if we were in a revival of sorts, as he worked and worked toward his final call to commitment. Although some of what he said was very true, I feel that it is important that we not allow ourselves to be caught up in the tide. How can he rationalize, for example, the fear he was trying to instill in us, while at the same time d ' am- I nin g the government and the rich for doing the same thing I found him full of contradictions. It is a personal experience where the diver himself is face to face with himself and destiny. Through this, important personal values of life seem to flash out and then seem to hold a somewhat greater light. Overall, with my experience with this sport, I have developed a better understanding of myself as a person. Everyone should jump just once to feel and experience falling from 3,000 feet. -Tom Dux ■nm: i ni n iw iM ii Registration 98 100 The College Christian Council endeavors to provide opportunities for students both to express their own faiths and to come into contact with the expressions of the faiths of others. Self-expression is possible through weekly worship, and by in- volvement in such community activities as visiting the elderly, tutoring, and helping with scout troops. In addition, a large number of students expressed their concern as they participated in the 1974 fast for world hunger. The council brings to campus both Jewish and Christian folk-singers, Jewish rabbis, the moderator of the Presby- terian church, as well as others who have a special interest to share with the college. The Christian council is interested in making the church an active and relevant force on campus which can enrich the lives of all members of the St. Andrews community. —Debbie Drinkard 4«aKSiilifi! ' ' ; -! 1 ii!i. l-Ji 101 St. Andrews Studies is a three-year, general education program in the fine arts, the humanities, and the social and behavioral sciences required of freshmen, sophomores, and seniors. The program moves from the development of skills of critical inquiry and a progressive consideration of disciplinary methods con- verging in an interdisciplinary understanding of the contemporary world. All three levels engage the student in serious consideration of moral values. Each course offers a variety of options in format and content. These options will vary from year to year. Common learning experiences in small and large groups-festivals, con- certs, films, lectures, workshops, etc.-complement the course. -St. Andrews catalog, 1974-1975 r 102 ■. 103 Dr. Donald J. Hart, president of St. Andrews since 1969, announced his resignation at a special faculty meeting in Avinger Auditorium. Reading from the letter of resignation he submitted to the Board of Trustees, Dr. Hart said that because of his current energy level as well as personal and family preferences he would return to full-time teaching. He further noted that when he assumed the presidency five years ago, it was with the intent of being an internal presi- dent — working for improvements within the structure of St. Andrews. He has accomplished most of his goals, he said; further, St. Andrews has moved into a new era in its growth which calls for an external president, concentrating upon improving the college ' s financial status and increasing enrollment. —The Lance 106 A place for people who care and want to help others. This is one of the many ways of describing what Lighthouse means to its staff and the people associated with it. Lighthouse is a licensed, non-profes- sional drug treatment center, a crisis center, and a general problem center for Scotland County. It symbolizes what can be accom- plished when people care enough. —Vernon Alford The following are nine criteria that de- termine who becomes a volunteer at Lighthouse: 1. Maturity of attitudes. 2. Psycho-social adequacy. 3. Lack of neurotic needs or conflicts (no ax to grind, etc.). 4. Demonstration of adequate inter- personal skills and self-awareness to fur- ther develop skills. 5. Commitment to psycho-educa- tional goals of the center. 6. Well-reflective listening. 7. Understand and utilize feedback when demonstrated. 8. Non-authoritarian. 9. Personal needs-why are you vol- unteering now. 107 108 h •— ' , L • • ■• V 0F ITt • • 1 ■■■-■$ - ■4ft B ■|   y : • -J JH ■■4m •• • Dr. W.D. White Professor of English James D. It was moved to the campus of St. Andrews Presbyterian College in 1961, and was operated for some years under the name of the Presbyterian Guidance Center. The Center program is highly individ- ualized. Each counselee shares in deter- mining the activities most desired to meet his or her needs. These typically in- clude: interviews and discussions with the counselor, selective testing from an extensive battery of tests, use of audio- visual resources, information in areas of personal and social adjustment, and educational and occupational research. Principle among these was the Science Olympiad in which 200 stu- dents from the Southeast, representing 20 schools, participated in a day long series of events including a college bowl, titration race, and ecological scav- enger hunt. Throughout the year, local high schools and science clubs were given tours and demonstra- tions also, and the NCSTA held its regional meeting here. Again this summer, a number of select stu- dents will participate in a Science Scholars program. Two advances of special interest to our students were the formation of a Pre-medical— Pre-dental Club and the establishment of a student internship at Scotland Memorial Hospital for which Leon Ap- plegate was responsible. The science faculty itself has been especially ac- tive. Clarence Styron is continuing research for the AEC at Oak Ridge. C. Tyler Miller has just published another book. John Clausz has completed a course in electron microscopy and is sharing his profi- ciency with many students. Each of the faculty members has taken part in a speakers bureau in which they have traveled to surrounding high schools presenting lectures related to their specific fields. —Ken Whittenburg. However, with the help of several dedicated people, we have tried to communicate the aca- demic, social, as well as emotional currents on the St. Andrews campus these past few months. Needless to say, this has meant a lot of hard work, frustration, and anxiety, but it has also brought the thrill of seeing our first proofs, and even of seeing the yearbook, itself. In compiling this yearbook, we encountered several problems, one of which was not being named to the Lamp and Shield staff until a few weeks before graduation. Because of this, we have had to omit several of the spring activities from our annual, but we hope to alleviate this problem in the future by naming a new staff much earlier in the semester. Another major problem that we came up against was in having no office of our own; this did not affect the quality of the yearbook, itself, but it made it extremely difficult for the staff to work on the book for extensive time periods. Be this as it may, it was a good year, and this was due largely to the conceited efforts of a few students-a few like Tony Ridings, our photographer, who we could always depend on to come through. Tony pulled a good many all-nighters so that this yearbook could go to press on time. He was aided by Kim McRae, who also contributed largely in the production of this book, giving not only of her talents but of her energy as well. ]oe Harvin, David Sutton, Susan Bainbridge, and others that I cannot even name, were constant in their on the spot photography, especially in the area of faculty and staff. George Howard and Tom Christian also deserve a word of thanks for their contributions in the field of photography. As for our cover, Betty Jo Carroll is a splendid artist; not only did she capture the spirit and quality of life at St. Andrews, she also spent hours in revising her original drawing so that it could suit a yearbook cover. And last but not least, a very special word of thanks to Ken Whittenburg, our busi- ness manager, who hunted all over Laurinburg in search of sponsors for the Lamp and Shield, and who entertained us with autopsy stories as we all did that tedious work on triplicates. To all of these people, and any others that we ' ve failed to name— thanks. lulia Melvin, editor Ginny Jackson, assistant editor 176 1L.
