Before the Kennedy Administration gave birth to the nevr famous Peace Corps, S.A. had an organization with the same name (they copied us I ) with some of the same concerns but with less exotic and closer-to-home concerns. It is an all volunteer group (no draft) seeking to meet some local needs through community involvement. As we swing into spring, we need you to help in one of the following: Breakfast Program ; Feeds 150 hungry children five mornings a week in a local school. This is the biggest program in operation now. We need another 10-12 helpers in this one. See George Conn or call Ext. 316. Tutoring ; Some tutoring programs are already in action. The need is greater than our personnel now. We can put evervbody any- body to work in this. See George Conn or call Ext. 316. Disgusting Wednesday night at 7; 30 FYesident Hart addressed the student body at an open Student Government meeting. The major concern of his ad- dress was the financial status of the college. The President along with the Faculty Executive Committee, the Student Cabinet, Dean Arnold, Julian Davis, Bruce Frye, Dean Decker and an Executive Committee from the Board of Trustees are at- tempting to do 3 things; 1) im- prove the quahty of St. An- drews, 2) make reductions in the program here possible, and 3) become more respon- sive to present and future students. The Christmas tree in the Student Center needs to be decorated, and an old fashioned tree trimmin ' and taffy pull will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday night specifically tor that purpose. Faculty, ad- ministration, students, and children are welcome to join the fun. Note To Cyclists Note : the attrition rate of St. Andrews is high enough without losing bicycle riders. We ' ve had comments that beer-loving and other miscellaneous errand-running bicycle riders are in imminent danger of being run down because their vehicles are not equipped with lights, so put lights on your tail and brighten up your front. It was first announced two weeks ago, that the cafeteria would not t e open for meals over fall break (reading days), because St. Andrews had not contracted with the food service to supply meals on these dates. This left those students staying here to pay for their own meals. Since the Saltire stated that the cafeteria would remain open, the Senate, led by member Julia McCalmn, moved to insure the operation of the food service at no expense to the students. We ha e found the dome to be a viable, adequate structure for differentiating order from chaos. In- deed, these words on the dome border on the irrational. Charlie Hart 111 Black Mountain College Festival . . ♦ A CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS on the 40th Anniversary of the first year of Black Mountain College, Black Mountain, N. C. 1 933 - 1 956 Spring, 1974 St. Andrews College Laurinburg, N. C. Black Mountain College Festival Spring 1974 Black Mountain College. Founded 1933. Closed 1956. In its short life in the mountains of North Carolina, Black Mountain College blazed a new trail in experimental education in America. A small, close community of people living and working together. Black Mountain College at its height had less than 100 students and faculty. In its last years fewer than 20 people could be found there at any one time. Yet it managed to attract a faculty of inter- national importance. And its alumni include more poets, novel- ists, painters, potters, musicians, and film makers of significance than any other small college in the country. Black Mountain College. A symbol of exploration and discov- ery. Explorations in education . . . self-directed studv; non-di- rected learning; student-led courses. Explorations in living . . . communal living; faculty-student work crews on the farm and constructing the buildings on the campus. And discoveries . . . the first happening, staged by John Cage. Buckminster Fuller ' s first geodesic dome. Robert Rauschenburg ' s all white paintings. New music. Op art. Pop art. Projccti e verse. Found poetry. Their origins were at Black Mountain College. In the spring of 1974, some of the explorers returned. Week by week, from early February through the end of April, thev came to St. Andrews to celebrate the strengths of Black Mountain. As each left we learned more about those strengths, but we also dis- covered our own strengths. Buckminster Fuller once said that man does not create. To create is to add something to the uni erse. Since nothi ng can be added, creation is impossible. VVliat man does is discover. And it was man ' s unique power to discover (rather than to create) that the Black Mountain College Festival celebrated. F. Whitney Jones 112 R. This annual is an attempt to shoir an ovenieic of St. Andrews. But more than that, it was possible not through the efforts of one per- son, but thnnigh the efforts of many members of the St. Andreus community and is therefore the creative product of that community. To these persons I would like to extend a Spe- cial thanks for their help: Chuck Mc leiU—for the tremendous opening section as well as general pictures. Tommy Sperling-for the cover design. Tony Ridings— for the geodesic dome pictures as well as general pictures of the Black Mt. College Festival, Kim McRae—for multitudinous pictures throughout the book. Glen Kennedy-for her valuable ' aid as sports editor, Wfxitney }ones-for the comments on Black Mt. College, Charlie Hart-for the comments on the geode- sic dome. Katrina Nesbit-for her invaluable aid, as my assistant editor, in putting the whole book together, and to Dottic Myers, Ellen Reed, Tim Bitter, Liz Leland, and Susan Motley for their help in all the little things that make a yearbook possible. Thanks bunches! Beth
