Kahlil Gibran So hesitant to approach this venture, so awed at first by the challenge. Then so quickly do we become confident, and forgetful of the challenge. Is it because we were not challenged, or is it that we turned our backs on it? n The romantic view of college is shadowed by the realism of our presence. and that our first task is to make ourselves a part of this enterprise. r iu We find we are alone in a crowd, f ' I t|!;4v m j ani. We are veterans after so little experience. We know what it is all about. Can we stand a close examination? Or will it show that we are not as sure of ourselves and as knowledgeable as we would have it seem? Experience does not provide irrefutable knowledge each time, but accumulated, it provides a deeper insight. 11 ££. ;:, .■ -;. ; is • -ri ( «rss «« ' :• ■ ■! Ecdesiastes 9:10a Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might. 15 «2- Wo matter how we view our years here it is undeniable that here we have been offered the chance. These offerings from the outside lifted us from our humdrum existence of daily pursuit . . . artists and lecturers furnished an assortment of enter- tainment ranging from opera to atoms. Gerard Souzay opened the season with his con- cert. Drew Pearson captivated an audience o£ students and faculty with his analysis of current affairs and timely predictions. 36 LECTURE 1962-63 Many walked away stimulated, some remained untouched, a few were relieved when it was over. Yet none could deny the beauty of the dance, the wisdom of the words, and the strangers we make of ourselves to these joys. The opera Elixir of Love was performed to a capacity crowd in Marcli. Dr. Ralph Lapp enlightened us with his per- ception into tlie New Age of Science. Dennis Baly, Danforth Lecturer. 37 .Jti. Our strivings culminate in reward. The club ' s purpose is to foster general good will and sportsmanship; sportsmanship being that desirable quality which is exemplified by the conduct of players, coaches, spectators, and school authorities in courtesy, fair- ness, and respectfulness; and in so doing, set an example for others by following the code set forth in the constitution of the Letterman ' s Club. When the Knights Go Marching In. ' 87 BASKETBALL The Sophomore year of intercollegiate athletic competition found the basketball Knights with a new coach, new team members, and new, tougher competition. Coach Spencer Boyd faced new per- sonalities and the challenge to produce a team that could withstand the more experienced teams he was to face in the 1962-1963 season. Along with the team members. Coach Boyd accepted this challenge, which resulted in a season that was tough, long, up and down at times, but most important of all, a season that was promising to future Knight teams. Returning lettermen carried the load in the first half of the season, but soon found able support in the talented freshmen and transfer students. The Knights will lose only Jim Bunnell through gradua- tion this year and should easily improve on this year ' s won 8- lost 12 record. SCORE ST. However this did not give a true picture of the 1962 season. Coach Jim Ollis did a superb job of round- ing his men of different baseball backgrounds into a polished unit that hit, fielded, and pitched its way up to at least one run behind the opponent in five of the games. The 1963 season has brought hopes of a baseball field on campus and the appearance of some bright prospects to booster the bench strength and fill the infield and outfield positions. Knight baseball teams will be characterized by hustle and the desire to give their best in every inning, a combination neces- sary for victory and hard, clean play. Safe at first. SCORE 1962 ST. Posting one of the better won-lost records in the first year of competition, the Knight netters were a versatile team with strong men at each position. Coach Rufus Hackney fought the elements as well as a lack of team depth to post a won 4 - lost 6 for the 1962 season. Weather hindered the start of the 1963 season, but with some sixteen men competing for positions, the outlook quickly turned to one of expectation. Three returning lettermen along with some strong freshman talent will strive to improve in this second year of competition. ■ rf ' rjA First row: Larry Varner. Bill Campbell, Fred Thomas. Coach Bill Morgan took the nucleus of co- captains Dickie Knowles and Charles Yeargan, and built a freshman loaded team into one that dis- played desire and determination in all the matches. The desire and ability shown by the inexperi- enced freshmen, plus the return of Dickie Knowles, Charles Yeargan, and transfers Skip Lahser and Larry Varner, will greet Coach Morgan next year and may well produce a winning season for wrest- ling. GOLF Coaches Bill Morgan and Lewis Hoy rounded a group of experienced golfers into a strong, closely paired team which lacked only the constant low scoring of one man. IVIatches in the 1962 season were played with a desire to win, but the competi- tion proved experienced and a little more settled than the Knights. Prospects for the 1963 season include one or two men capable of the qualities of a No. 1 man, who could give the incentive neces- sary to push other team members to better games.
