Big Brothers and Sisters . . . our job was to orient freshmen to St. Andrews, as yet only a modernistic ghost town . . . How could we introduce them to a college life that was as alien to us as it was to them? In three days of meetings we planned what to tell them . . . still we had much that would be learned together . . . with our little brothers and sisters we explored the school and its possibilities . . . and we gained confidence because there was someone looking to us for guidance. The Student Council, made up of the executive officers from each branch of student government, functions as a coordinator of student activities. The Senate is the legislative branch and is made up of elected and appointed representatives. The Honor Council is our student-elected and student- supported judicial board; their job is not always rewarding, and never easy. Among the evening courses offered for college credit were Adult Reading Im- provement, Astronomy, Painting for Pleasure, and Science and the Modern World, in addition to the more common courses in English, Algebra, and Bi- ology. Community Service courses, providing non-credit classes, were offered in orchestra, chorus, and Great Books groups. A highlight of the year was the five week Leadership Training School conducted by Fay- etteville Presbytery. As time goes on. it is hoped that St. Andrews Adult Education may expand its operation to serve more people in the various fields of education. Dr. Louis C L. They were assisted by the swing men, Chris Voss, Jim Bunnell, and Tommy Jessup As they closed the season, the Knights added to their two victories over Charlotte College by defeating College of Charleston and in a final superb effort producing a 110 to 104 win over Georgia State. It was a long season, but it was a good one. In their first year of competition the Knights of St. Andrews exhibited ability and spirit, and their 4-10 record is not an accurate statement of the team that finished the season. The team was formed strictly of volunteers, there being no scholarships possible for athletics this year. Coach Hackney turned out a well- drilled outfit for the opening game, but was forced to experiment quite a bit to find a winning combination. Showing improvement with every game, as the season moved into its second half and the team gained experience in playing together. Coach Hackney found a solid combination in Cecil Chewning, Bill Clark, and Joe Speaks in the front Coach Hackney and co-captains Bill Clark and Chris Voss. 108 Coach Ollis knew what he had to do; take whatever volunteers that came to him and turn them into an efficient, winning base- ball team. Most of the volunteers brought some experience with them, from other schools and other teams. They were to be- come a unit, tight and well- drilled, stressing a team effort. The first St. Andrews baseball team. The Knights looked solid be- hind the plate with Morrison and Settlemyre, Settlemyre also a possibility in an outfield that fea- tured Barbour and Little with Hurt, Dawson, and Jackson fight- ing for the other position. In the infield Cosby was at first when he wasn ' t pitching, with Carter or Croom at second, and Benton and Morrison round- ing it out at short and third. GOLF C3i , vn 111 An able hand tor the details of preparation is always important. WE PREPARE The first year of intramural competi- tion at St. Andrews was met with con- siderable enthusiasm and pronounced a general success. The student body was divided into teams for the compe- tition in every sport. These teams were expected to field one or more sub-teams for each activity, depending on the interest and ability available. Compe- tition was strongly felt, built on a rivalry with one ' s friends. . . . The season opened with football, this with a non-agression set of rules. There was no contact allowed, usually, and the game was fast and interesting. . . The cheerleaders were organized in time to lend their efforts to livening up the football season, and this they most certainly did. ... It was always wise to check the weather before plan- ning on an afternoon of basketball, but the outdoor courts were good enough, and the game was played with enthusiasm. ... TO PLAY OUR LITTLE GAMES The games were many, and the competition keen. We gave it all we had. 112 The first was football, our own special type, a wild sort of thing, always interesting to watch. TEMl CO! IPETITION CALLING FOR SKILL, AGILITY AND HIGH EMOTION Soccer was a popular g mc. and it took some courage to gel oul there with the flying feet and the arms you weren ' t supposed to use- Basketball was played by some hardy souls on our out- door courts. The wind velocity was always a big factor. 113 Soltball involved a little less ertort and a different kind of ability. It was high concentration on that little ball. From soccer and the other more energetic games, we moved to some calmer activities, such as soft- ball. There were the usual outstanding plays and the usual heated disputes in the game of inches, and sometimes it seemed like miles . . . Volleyball aroused a noticeable feeling of compe- tition; the game was sincerely played, and fun too, as was tennis, available to those interested in expending the energy. It ' s a good way to keep fit. . . . Archery offered a way to relax and to develop a skill. There ' s a particular satisfaction to a bull ' s-eye . . . That was the game as we played it. It is good to be a winner and to know the feeling of victory, and in our situation it was not really bad to lose. There was always next time and another sport. Our intramural pro- gram offered something to everybody, even the non-athletic. . . . The game offers us something we could find nowhere else. We didn ' t play too well some- times, but it was fun, and it offered a relief from the rigors of academic life. . . . TO MORE DELIBERATE ACTIVITIES OF CO-ORDINATION AND REACTION Volleyball in our )i ninasium wiis a] va s fun There ' s nothing like good-natured competition. 114 Tennis called for a little ability and a lot of acti it If you had some excess energy. . . . TO INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION IF SIMPLY TO RELAX The bow and arrow becomes an art if you take it that way. or just an activity to pass an afternoon outside. i  i| The thrill of blasting out of a sandtr Lp. or of a shot well made.
