VOLUME1 1938 f. 28 C C 8210 ---W - The WEE BAGPIPE FOREWORD HOUGH our high ambitions for an an- nual this year were not realized, we have tried to give in printed form, a book which, even though it is not an annual, will replace the BAGPIPE in the hearts of the students. This book, arranged to carry the burden of an an- nual, has been made possible by the contribu- tions of the student body in expressing their desire for less expensive yearbook. If in the pages of this book, lasting mem- ories are recordedg if it has fulfilled the desire of the student body, and if it recalls to your minds in future days thoughts of your first Alma Mater, then our fondest hopes have been fulfilled, and our efforts been repaid many times. fv -f .-.fs -- A Presbyterian Junior College l DEDICATION N the realm of character that shining point called leadership stands out from all the rest, a guiding star to those who are follow- ing. In the life of our President we have found that wonderful trait, and in the light of that personality have we been guided thus far upon our college careers. In recognition of his service to Presbyterian Junior College, and as a mark of appreciation for his efforts toward the advance- ment of our lives, We, the Senior Class, dedicate this, the first volume of the Wee Bagpipe, to our Leader and President, REV. INTRODUCTION ECAUSE of the struggles of the Board of Trustees and Faculty, our school has lived and Hourished through ten years of work. Though the depression has been a great hold-back, and the financial end was in dire need of re- plenishing, our beloved Alma Mater has sent many stu' dents to higher schools of learningq and with the splendid enrollment expected for next year, we are certain that time will bring forth a bigger and better school for those boys who feel the need of a junior College. HISTORY On September 28, 1927, the Trustees of the Elsie High School presented an overture to the Presbytery of Fayetteville, asking for authority to set in motion an effort to establish a junior College in connection with that in- stitution. Subsequent events indicate that this was but the crystallization of a general feeling that there was a real need in this part of the Lord's vineyard for such an in- stitution. The Presbytery gave its hearty approval of the idea contained in the overture in the following resolution: That we recognize the need of a junior College ffor menj and recommend that such an institution be estab- lished as soon as possible. A committee of five was ap- pointed to investigate the whole question as to cost, loca- tion and the possibiltiy of securing the co-operation of other Presbyteries in the enterprise. A similar commit- tee was appointed by Mecklenburg Presbytery. These committees held a two-day joint conference studying the whole question and visiting the prospective locations for the proposed school. In their report they endorsed the plan to establish a junior College for men, recommended that an offer from the owners of the Caro- lina property at Maxton be accepted and the institution located there, and called for a joint meeting of their re- spective Presbyteries to hear and study the report. The WEE BAGPIPE The two Presbyteries met in joint session in the audi- torium of the Carolina College, Maxton, November 29, 1927. After a careful consideration of the report of the committee, the following resolution was adopted: Re- solved, That this joint conference of the Presbyteries of Fayetteville and Mecklenburg, recommend to the Synod of North Carolina the establishment of a junior College for Men, and that Synod accept the generous offer of the Methodist Conference of North Carolina of the Carolina College property at Maxton for that purpose. The Synod of North Carolina met in special session in the auditorium of the Carolina College on February 21, 1928, to consider these recommendations. After a full discussion of the whole question the following resolution was adopted: That it is the sense of this body that the Synod of North Carolina should establish within its bounds a Junior College for Men. The offer of the Methodist Conference of North Carolina was accepted and the following resolution creating the Presbyterian Junior College for Men was adopted: NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved: First: That the said Synod of North Carolina, now in special session in Carolina College auditorium, Maxton, N. C., on this 21st day of February, 1928, in response to said call, and said call having been found in due form, and notice of same having been mailed more than fifteen days prior to this date, does hereby accept the offer of the Trustees of Carolina College to transfer their plant in the town of Maxton to such corporate body as may be hereinafter named and provided for, upon the payment of the sum of approximately 531000, said property to be used and operated as a Junior College for men, under the beneficial ownership and control of the Synod of North Carolina, Presbyterian Church in the United States, it being understood that said plant consists of about 1815 acres of land upon which is located an administration build- ing, dormitory, president's home and other smaller build- ings, together with all equipment as scheduled in their in- ventoryg that a Board of Trustees consisting of 18 members, 11111111 ll Presbyterian Junior College one Trustee from each Presbytery and nine Trustees at large, shall be elected at this meeting, that said Trustees shall be divided into three classes, whose terms shall ex- pire as follows: Six in the Fall of 19293 six in the Fall of 1930, and six in the Fall of 19313 and all vacancies in the Board of Trustees caused by expiration of terms, resigna- tion or otherwise, shall be Hlled by the Synod, that said Trustees, when elected, are hrreby authorized, empowered and directed to procure a charter under the laws of the State of North Carolina, for the Presbyterian Junior College for Men, which shall be the name of the institu' tion, and which shall be owned by the Synod of North Carolina, and controlled by it through the Board of Trustees: and said Trustees shall acquire a good and perfect title to the aforesaid property, without limitations or restrictions, taking title in the name of the Presbyterian junior College for Meng that said Trustees are further authorized to provide for the payment of the amount necessary to be paid for said property, such funds to be obtained by them in such manner as they may deem ex- pedient, whether by solicitation from individuals, or by negotiating loans upon the property itself as security, and to execute and deliver any and all notes, bonds, deeds of trust, or other legal instruments for such sums as may be necessary to complete the transfer of the property hereinbefore authorized, that it is contemplated by the Synod, and power and authority are hereby granted to said Trustees to initiate and carry forward plans to the end that a Junior College for Men shall eventually be opened, established and operated at Maxton, under the control of the Synod of North Carolina, which shall be for the glory of God and a blessing to mankind, that said Board of Trustees shall make a written report to the next stated meeting of the Synod. l 14 The WEE BAGPIPE' WHO'S WHO AT P. W'ith the co-operation of the faculty and the Student Body, we have given the Honor System a thorough try out, and it has proved most successful. The decision of the Student Council in all matters of discipline has met with the approval of all. and through the splendid co-operation of the Student Body. the task of discipline has, for the most part been relatively light. Basketball Team The WEE BAGPIPEH FOOTBALL TEAM ITH only six letter men back on the squad, Coach Hand began work immediately after school opened. Due to the lack of players he was handicapped in forming a line, but the back field work was excellent. The team encountered all teams in the con- ference and Davidson Freshmen. Even though the playing does not show so well in points, the score in sportsmanship is one seldom excelled. The freshmen contributed strongly to the team, proving that we should have an excellent team next season. Home-coming game was played late in October with Brevard as the opposing team: great work was shown in passes and runs by both teams, and Brevard carried the score with 18 to 6. 6 BASKETBALL TEAM HE Basketball Team this year had a very successful season. With six letter men returning, and with a promising group of Freshmen, Coach Hand trained these men into an excellent team, a team which showed the highest example of sportsmanship. The team, led by those letter men, encountered many strong opponents and played admirably. The boys always played head's-up ball. Entering the junior College tournament at Davidson, we lost to one of the strongest teams in the conference. Some of the best players being Freshmen. an indication is seen that a stronger team will be developed next year. Presbyterian Junior College BASEBALL TEAM EGINNING practice under terrible odds, the boys show splen- did spiritg few games have been played as yet, but the future is bright. With new suits, white and red, the boys present a colorful specimen of real sports. While under handicaps from all sides, the team plays with wonderful skill, and endurance. Many of the players are First Year men, and some have never played baseball before, but in spite of this, we are expecting great things from the Coach and his baseball men. 6 INTRAMURALS ECAUSE of the lack of equipment, many of the minor sports had to be cut from our program this year, however, with teams representing Commercial Class, Freshmen Class, and Sophomore Class, our interest was upheld throughout Basketball seasong and since warm weather, a Tennis tournament is being staged. Track news is scarce, except that many of the boys are planning to enter the Conference tournament at Davidson, representing P. C. Wfith this being the first year intramurals have been tried here, amazing interest is shown, and great advantages are shown for future work in this line of athletics. Boxing was removed entirely from our program, thus causing much more interest in other parts of the athletic program. Though we lose many of our best players in all the intramurals at the close of this session, we are hoping for the best in years to come, for through this program we have found much enjoyment, and new material for our teams. L 20 The WEE BAGPIPE n, ,if-, V... THE MONOGRAM CLUB HE members of this club have, either last year or this, made a well deserved letter in some form of athletics. This is an honorary society for our athletes, and under the supervision of Coach C. H. Hand, Jr. It is through this organization that many of our dances are sponsored. Though this club this year may be smaller than in years past, it has been most thorough in all its duties. Presbyterian Junior College 21 ROLL HAROLD LITTLE ANDERSON Horse Shoe, N. C.
