We as students participated in this Council by offering our prayers and sacrifices for its success. 7 Dear Graduates: As you leave St. Andrew's you carry with you many memories. The thoughts of your teachers, your classmates, your studies, and the many events, both religious and social will always be held sacred. Outstanding among your recollections will be the great Council which convened during your senior year. This spiritual conclave will be recalled, not merely as a singular event of the twentieth century, but also as something which placed you in an atmosphere of holy dedication as you faced the realities of a turbulent world. Pope john called this Council to show forth the hidden beauty of the Church and to revitalize the spirit of Christian living. He urged the faithful To open their hearts to the action of divine grace and to let the light of eternal truth shed its radiance over lives that are wholeheartedly and enthusiastically dedicated towards putting into effect the Commandments of jesus Christ. Your education in St. Andrew's was fashioned according to the same manner. As you depart from your Alma Mater under Mary's protection, endeavor to make manifest by your Christian living the inner strength which you possess. Devotedly yours in Christ, Monsignor James Hourihan Journey to Rome His Eminence james Francis Cardinal Mclntyre and Bishop Timothy Manning, Auxiliary of Los Angeles, prepare for their trip to Rome to attend the Ecumenical Council. As our representatives, they will aid the Pope in his endeavors for renewal of the internal life of the Church and Christian unity. 9 ,W ' f f ., -',- 'Y 1 , . Building on the basic truths learned in the previous year, sophomores study Christ as Redeemer through whom they share in the life of grace by means of prayer and the Sacraments. To inspire the junior students to a vol- untary participation in the liturgy of the Church, they are led to a recognition of the Holy Spirit as the dominant force in their lives. Seniors study vocation as the sphere in which the life of love reaches perfection, be- coming for them a blueprint for personal happiness. Considerations on the meaning of the Ecumenical Council, why it was called, what it will do, and how it will work, have been incorporated in the religion course. Students of Religion II explain symbols representing Christ as the Prince of Peace and the beginning and end of all things The Ecumenical Council is you! Religion III students set out to discover their part in the life of the church In the Marriage Guidance Course, Father Acton exchanges views with the seniors on the quali- ties of the ideal husband. Since knowledge of history is of great importance, the students at St. Andrew's are offered a four year course to enable them to understand the complicated problems affecting our nation and the world. Freshmen in Ancient History learn that western culture had its beginnings in Greece and Rome. Jousts, tournaments, castles and cathedrals fascinate sophomore students of history with the pomp and panoply which mark the Mid- dle Ages. From .the beginnings of the modern world, through the colonial expansions of European nations to the discovery of the New World, junior students find history vibrant with the impact of exploration and development. Looking forward to the day when they will be full-fledged citizens with voting rights, senior students of civics acquire an awareness of their privileges and responsibilities. juniors in United States History participate in a dis cussion on the problems of a divided Berlin. Makati. ak It is an easy choice when everyone in Language Arts Class knows the ZFISWEFS. From David Copperfield to Macbeth, the four years of English at St. Andrew's cover a wide range of literature and writing. Sophomores bringing with them a solid foundation in grammar, learn to recognize and avoid run-on and fragment sentences. Numerous essay assignments, though dread- ed, teach the juniors to organize their thoughts and to reason logically. Since ideas achieve their full value only when com- municated to others, the skill of writing clearly and interestingly is developed in Eng- lish IV. Reading is stressed throughout the four-year program as students span the centuries from the English epic of Beowulf to the modern American drama of Our Town. English Illustrations add interest to a report given in English II. 26 s ..- ' Senior students of English become acquainted with people, plots and places of Shakespeare's England. Mathematics Algebra Il students suspect that pencil and paper would have been quicker than the slide rule. To freshmen, general math and Al- gebra I present at first only a maze of riddles, but with persistent endeavor, the x's and y's and the bewildering percent- ages are soon mastered. Geometry also has its diliiculties, but sophomores find solutions through logical reasoning. Al- gebra II and senior math broaden upper- classmen's knowledge of the infinite number systems. Those students following the School Mathematics Study Group Program find it both challenging and re- warding, Senior math students graph the function f xxl2x2 using critical points and inflection points There is more than one angle to a problem. Salve! Buenos Dias! Bon Jour! However it is said, it means welcome whether in ancient Rome, sunny Spain or gay Paris. The spelling and sounds of the languages may differ, but students learning a foreign tongue are alike in their enthusiasm and interest as they pursue their assignments. Latin comes alive in the unadorned style of General Julius Caesar, in the fiery rhetoric of the politician, Cicero, and in the flowing verse of the poet, Virgil. Although students of French and Spanish must begin with the fundamentals of grammar and easy stories, they eventually pro- gress to the reading of novels in the original, such as Le Petit Prince, Le Bourgeois Gentilbom- me, Don Quixote, and El Cid. Through acquaint- ance with the language, history and culture of other countries, students gain an understanding and appreciation of foreign lands. Cuidado con la Cl Margaret Werner helps correct a slight error. Tempus fugit is a familiar phrase to students of Latin IV. an' ages Nous parlons bien Frangais, n'est-ce pas? Chemistry is offered to juniorsg seniors may choose either physics or biology, Two special courses were added this year. Principles of the Physical Sciences was made available to freshmen with high scholastic at- tainments, and Principles of the Biological Sciences gave enterprising sophomores a similar challenge. As a survey course, general science fulfills graduation requirements for someg to others it offers a background for further studies in this field. Stu- dents of typing learn the fundamentals of office work as well as first aid for bro- ken finger nails. Although Gregg short- hand seems confusing at first, future stenographers master the skill of turning words into legible signs. The most notice- able results of the bookkeeping class are uncluttered desks and organized files. An important part of their course is learning proper selection of clothes, becoming hair styles, and the general deportment a secretary needs. Business Even one mistake is forbidden in the Typing II class This is where the paper goes. But what do you do with this? asks Nora Gaylor. Drama student, Kathy Ross, portrays the character of an angry mother. Physical Education, dancing, clothing and drama are the special interest courses offered at St. Andrew's. Physical fitness, a knowledge of basic rules and good sportsmanship are the re- sults of gym classes at St. Andrew's. Dancing is a class taken by sophomores which teaches them basic dance steps and social etiquette. The terms bias, selvedge, and placket are familiar to cloth- ing students who learn the useful art of sewing. ROBERT HOPKINS for his gracious and never failing consideration. To MR. THOMAS C. BROOME of Kathryn Novak Studio for his artistic rendering of people, places and things which make up our photographic copy, but especially for his patient under- standing of our incompetencies which must have made his work just a little harder. To our loyal and generous PATRONS without whom our yearbook would lack its greatest assistance. To the STUDENTS who worked tirelessly and effectively in the TOWER drive. To the earnest and zealous STAFF who freely spent them- selves that the '65 TOWER might become the finest, the greatest, and the best.
