Your year-book reflects a happy blending of scholastic development. religious activity and wholesome recreation. lt speaks to you of that comprehensive Christian education which makes perfect the ideal young woman. The pages of the TOWER serve as a pattern on which you model yourselves in afterlife. In such knowledge, devotion. and balance will you be able to find happiness here and ioy hereafter. As you leave this school, we pray Saint Andrew will protect you: we ask Our Lady to inspire you: and we petition the Lord to give you an abundance of His heavenly grace during your earthy pilgrimage. Devotedly yours in Christ, James E. Hourihan, Pastor Assistants Being senior marriage guidance coun- sellor, Father Roughan has helped many Saint Andrew's graduates toward success- ful marriages. Father Acton, our new Sodality spirit- ual director and ChisRho chaplain, has become a familiar figure around Saint Andrew's during the past year. nm-5-n 'wg-4 wb X 5 ax. 1' ,QV .Q 4 f 'Q ' 4' Q ,4 Faculty SIsIer RosaIIa Mary, SUDSIIOI French II. The Mother's Blu The parents and guardians ofthe students of St. Andrew's High School have many objectives in mind when planning and attending the meetings of the high school Mothers Club. They promote.cooperation between the home and the school, encourage their daughters toward spiritual, cultural, and social knowledge, promote interest in literature, and empha- size the appreciation of the beauty and depth of our religion, The material assistance they provide the school comes from money raised by hot dog sales, membership drives, and theater parties. These proiects have been successful, and so new equipment, records, and books have been obtained for the high school this year. L. T0 R.: Mrs. Richard Hitchcock Mrs. Fredrick S. Kramer, and Mrs B. In the background the sewing ma- chines lie idle until the next period, when clothing will resume. Physical Education Physical education classes learn the rules of fair play and sportsmanship. Competition runs high among class squads for the period championship. Music Department Sister Maria Beata, who accompanies the student body at masses and benediction, helps R. Gallo, 1. Erschoen, and P. Cermak with a difficult point of phrasing. Fine Arts The art class develops in the student a sense of line and color. Using modern tech- niques, the students create interesting mosaics with colored pebbles. Although it was organized in October, the string class has mastered such orchesa tral greats as The Merry Widow Waltz and Shortin' Bread, The choral classes, under the direction of Sister Bridget of Mary and Miss Murphy, have displayed their talent on many occa- sions, including the evening of the Open House. At activity, a spelling bee was held in which the seniors were found to be tops. The day was presented by the C.S.F. Advent Program With the help of Sisters Bridget of Mary and Maria Beata, an Advent spectacular was presented on De- cember 18, 1957. As the house lights dimmed, music played and Diane Zennie gave an explanatory pro- logue. On the stage, we saw the empty creche awaiting the coming Saviour. In succession, the officers of each class carrying figures for the stable, proceeded up the aisles to the stage. Thus the four classes depicted the passing of the four weeks of Advent. Meanwhile, rep' resentatives of all classes led Advent prayers. So ended Act I. Act ll began with another explanatory prologue on the Great Antiphons. Next, came the hymn 'Veni, Veni, Emmanuel. The Antiphons themselves were presented in a unique way. On the stage, Angels, appearing over the world, held scrolls illuminated with symbolic illu- strations of each of the Antiphons. After chanters sang the prayer to a psalm tone, a meditation was read for each one. Thus we began our Christmas holidays, with the prayers of the joyfully expectant Church. Our vaca- tions were happier since they had had a holy begin- ning. Retreat Everyone agreed that this year's re- treat was one of the best ones St, Andrew's has ever had. lt was con- ducted by Father Deegan, who inspired us to examine our consciences and, by the end of the retreat, have some posi- tive resolutions made, On one day in October, sounds of laugh- ter echoed through the school as we ba- nanas sat listening with undivided atten- tion to the fascinating tales of Sister Con- stance Mary. She, very wittily, told us about missionary life in Basutoland, about its people, its customs, its sacrifice. As she talked, all of the girls began to realize what a wonderful person she is - not only to dedicate her life to God, but also to go to a foreign and uncivilized land to bring Christ's teachings to those so much less fortunate than ourselves. 1 i i 79 Candids San Francisco was sad to see our gay group of Seniors Ieave its once peaceful city. llilip- Y ' - V v . 4 l M iiiu . , M .Q-f' is Y --. ,WV , .a..,.. hmmm . , . place a burning match in the mouth of a large i, M-, i 'K' container of hydrogen, and . . .
