The diction¬ ary gives the following definition: a fare¬ well address especially at the graduating exercises of a school or college. The word is derived from two Latin words: vale fare¬ well, and dicere: to say. So,a valedictorian is simply a student who is appointed to bid farewell, in the name of his fellow-graduates, to the school which he is about to leave or has just left. What are the criteria on which a vale¬ dictorian is chosen? The custom has been to appoint a student whose work showed a high level of achievement. But this was not the only deciding factor. His conduct had to be irreproachable, and hew expected to have collaborated with all the members of the teaching staff and with all his faELow- students.
