We realize that we are not the first nor will we be the last class to stop before Our Lady, for since the beginning of our Alma Mater on Sackett Street, Our Blessed Mother has held a prom- inent place on the grounds. Even after the new school moved to Union Street and later to its present site, Our Lady remained as the Protec- toress of our school because it was her strong and never wearied love that encouraged the Sisters to establish the firm foundations of our school. Looking back over the last four years we re- call the prayers offered each morning at the shrine. Sometimes they were brief but always they pleaded for Our Heavenly Mother's care. We, the Clan of 1954, coniecrate onr yearbook to oar Bleirecl Mother, the Cryital Fountain of Faith, Fragrant Lily of All Holineii, Conqnereri of Evil and i Qneen of the Uninerre, in tloir the One Hnnafretlrv Year l of tloe Proclamation of the Dogma of Her Immaculate Conception. In the afternoon, again we stopped to say good- bye and many times to seek her advice. We will always remember, too, that it was here at St. Agnes under the guidance of the Sisters of Saint joseph that we learned by Our Lady's example the principles that will govern our future life and help us attain eternal salvation. To passers-by Our Lady smiles lovingly, to the faculty she gives zeal and encouragement for each new day, to the Semites she is a model of humility, purity and perfection, to us, the Class of 1954, Our Mother gave her love, her example, her counsel and understanding and most of all, her only Son. As we bid our fond farewell we stand before Our Lady's statue to offer this our prayer: Our Blessed Mother, continue to be our guardian through life. May you always remain our con- solation in suffering, our refuge from worldly temptations, safeguard of our purity and most of all our model of Christian womanhood. S391 x T .4 JANUARY 19 The day was not all it could have been. The snow, and dark overcast skies held little promise of what the future would bring to the fifteen eager girls entering St. Agnes Seminary. As we pulled open the massive, heavy doors, a glance at the tall, prepossessing grandfather clock told us this was our first day. In the beginning, we were frightened, we were bewildered, we were freshmen! Amid chaos and confusion, we cautiously approached Room 101. After peek- ing inside, the multi-colored posters and varied unintelligible expressions left no doubt that it was the French room, and it was to be our home for six, exciting months. No sooner had we begun to feel slightly important Cafter all we were in high schoolb than twenty-two boisterous seniors barged into our classroom and menacingly warned us against treading upon their private staircase . Within a few days we had settled down and who will ever forget the amazing discovery that mittens worn on the feet could be put to good use in the Biology Lab. Then there were our goldfish, Paul and Charlie, who one day caught a chill and perished. And of course, often many difiicult lessons were learned-exactly how to place amo, amas, amat on vocabulary papers. All at once it was june and we departed for the summer vacation. September found sixteen civilized freshmeng we had lost one girl, but gained two, sporting new, shorter hair-do's. The fall months flew by, and suddenly the Christmas season loomed before us with its assurance of the pageant, school party and many more gay times. We returned from inter-term recess, fourteen proud sophomores, and moved across the hall doomed to become perfect mathematicians. Now we really be- longed to the Sem. Between our theorems and Compasses, we soon visioned the world about us in the weird shapes of circles, triangles, squares and rectangles, etc. The glory of France and the beauty of its pronunciation Cespecially the famed oui which we twisted to sound like ooieD brought with it a new chal- lenge, namely, the French language. Surprisingly enough, vacation again appeared to have crept up on us, and we waved our farewells to fellow Semites. All too soon we had returned after two months, only eleven of us, and at- tempted to concentrate on dividing Gaul into three parts. Praying, memorizing and cramming finally brought Geometry to an end, and somehow we passed our Math and Latin regents. 12 CLASS HI TORY Half our goal had been reached. We were no longer frightened or bewil- dered, we were juniors. It was during fifth term that we shook hands with Cicero and his contemporaries. Many lunches were minus desserts, for some of us had decided to diet. This lasted about three days because by the seventh period we started to suffer from hunger pains. Our small Intermediate class didn't seem to be making much headway, but at long last more regents were passed and we were on our way for a long, blithe summer. We returned to the '3B having forfeited one classmate, but profited by an- other. Despite our over abundance of studies, somebody always managed to for- get her translation. Poor Cicero! He tried!! We not only conquered him but also surmounted the French regents. Unexpectedly, we were SENIORS !! We proudly displayed our senior but- tons, and grandly accepted our long-awaited, cherished senior rings. Nothing could surpass our joy as we lunched at one of our homes. The memorable lunch- eon was followed by the show at Radio City Music Hall and the Persian Room of the Hotel Plaza. Studies resumed and before long we happily awaited a pleas- ant, fun-packed summer. September again!! Dimly, the realization came to us. We were 4B's . Plans for our final Tea Dance were begun, and friendly arguments concerning the Year Book could be heard echoing from Room 301. The days slipped by, and amidst the school and homework, we studiously memorized parts for our Christ- mas Pageant, baked cookies and made posters announcing the annual Holly Hop. Christmas came and was gone-with it the wonderful remembrances of that gay, magical, lofty night all our own-Our Prom. We began to cram for those dreaded Regentsl' but we pulled through successfully. Our Class Day is about to begin. We are certain that we shall cherish these few, final, sad hours at the Sem as well as the precious memories of the preceding four years. Now we bid adieu to our dearly beloved Sisters, and thank them for all they have done for us. And farewell to you also, Semites, who have shared our laugh- ter and work. As we pass through the gates, we quickly search the Gazing Ball for a glance into the future, then look trustingly at the statue of our Mother and silently implore her to protect and guide us in the years to come. Silently the gates which once beckoned us to enter the Sem, are closing be- hind. Even the halls and stairways which in the past bustled with the clatter of the june '54 Class, remain with only a remembrance of our joys and sorrows. Nor will these warm memories ever escape from the depths of our hearts. NEW FACES While reminiscing, we see our- selves as forty-five nervous freshmen entering the portals of Saint Agnes Seminary. Ftightened by this new phase of life, we assembled in the auditorium to await our destiny. Finally, we were divided into two sections: one headed by Sister Anthilia, the other by Sister Agnes Dorothy. Gradually we became ac- quainted with the Sem. The blue and white uniforms were strange to most of us but with a few alter- ations, here and there, we felt right at home in our Sak's creations . Settling down to the high school routine we traveled from room to room with the faithful camp-chairs dragging noisily at our heels. Latin, biology and algebra presented quite a problem at first. With learning .... '!f.....1,?.,..-.'fr. 0 . 5 it 1 gf I t .-LQ, f a S A .'t - l , masculine, feminine and neuter end- ings, and pulling poor innocent grasshoppers apart, we never did find what x and y equalled! How- ever, soon we became accustomed to the complicated questions and answers-we did?? We freshmen were really a normal quiet class fonly for a short whileb. But oc- casionally our small voices would burst forth at the wrong time and we had to be silenced by the famous words, That will suHice! Then we were elevated to a more dignified position in the Sem, civi- lized freshmen Cbut only after the drudgery of finalsj. Retreat broke into our regular course of studies as we prayerfully turned our thoughts to God and His Resurrec- tion. May brought our first Field Day which we shall never forget since we still have the scars as con- stant reminders. The senior grad- uation in june marked the comple- tion of one year at the Sem. HAPPY TIMES At the end of a wonderful sum- mer the new sophomores Cnow di- minished in number? were greeted by their new official, and Geometry teacher, Sister Marie Concepcion. Oh, how well we remember those memorized theorem cards and the peculiar shaped figures fnever could remember the difference between a rectangle and parallelogramj. French was also introduced to us in our third term. Amazing how quickly we caught on to that new language! Why in two weeks we could say Bon jour, ma souer g but it took a long time to under- stand Fermez la bouche! N'est-ce pas? Our fourth term marked the birth of the never to be forgotten-Spirit of 76! It was in room 202 that strange things happened. Unusual noises could be heard daily behind its mysterious walls accompanied by the steady rumble of the floor, gloved hands appeared from no- where and waved to and fro, and obscure coded notes were found. Perhaps the most unusual happen- ings were the tiny pieces of plaster which continued to fall from the ceiling. Now what possibly could have caused that?? Then much to our displeasure we took our first Regents in june. They were soon followed by beach-parties and the beginning of the long line of sweet sixteen celebrations. Another vacation flew by. Geometry had ended but In- termediate Algebra quickly replaced it. This was better? Latin still con- tinued and we advanced from Cae- sar's commentaries to Cicero's. Yet our minds were not always occupied with twisted translations in that class. For, whenever sister asked, What'll you have , we immediately answered Pabst Blue Ribbon! RED AND GOLD We seemed to be writing more in our junior year, especially after we were introduced to Sister joan's Palmer Club. Unfortunately, this group admitted its members freely foh those miserable hours of trans- lating French to Englishj. To in- crease our knowledge of France, pen pals were secured for us. It was then that we realized how much we didn't know, discouraging wasn't it? The ten member Soft Ball Team also originated this year. Frequently the smash of glass could be heard, but we carried on in our game while munching on crackers which were sent from our sports-lovers in the convent. Even ping-pong was a fa- vorite pastime with us. The teams, the Irish versus the Italians! Then it happened! After three anxious years of expectation, Sister Mary Agnes presented each girl with the red and gold Senior ring. Trembling we stood before Sister Alonzo as she placed them on our fingersg later we set off to celebrate the greatest thrill experienced in the Sem. THRILLS AND FRILLS Seniors - that one fascinating word which held us all spellbound. But we soon came down from our clouds, only to be introduced to chemistry. Yet with the odors that filled the Lab room we soon wished we could go back to the heavenly mists, anywhere, as long as sulphur and its companions were far away. Our final year was a busy one. Prep- arations for scholarships took place, and December really occupied all our time. The Holly Hop had to be planned and parts had to be learned JUNE 1954 for the Christmas pageant. And at last, the long awaited ,night had ar- rived-the night of the Senior Prom, filled with happiness and unforget- table memories. The remaining six months pro- gressed rapidly. Before we dreamed it possible graduation day was upon us. Tensely but rhythmically, we marched to the stage in the Acad- emy of Music. After four years it had happened. We were wearing the customary white gowns and carrying American Beauty roses. Yes, these remembrances will for- ever remain cherished in our hearts even though the gates are closed. NAME. A. Dwyer C.
