PRULUEUE This year the Catholic World celebrates the centenary of the apparition of Our Lady to Bernadette at Lourdes. As the Mother of God guided the little shepherd girl then, so we feel confident that she guides usg and particularly our very own bishop, His Excel- lency Walter P. Kellenberg, first bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. The place Our Lady holds in his life is seen in his chosen motto, Queen, guide me by thy light. By this choice he places himself completely under her care. We, too, wish to show the world the high esteem and devotion we hold for Mary and to manifest our great love for her by choosing for the theme of this annual the motto of our bishop. We recognize the constant demands upon us spiritually, physically, intellectually, cultur- ally, and morally, and realize that Mary's un- ceasing love and care for us is the only thing that keeps us on that narrow path leading to our eternal reward. This motto and all it stands for should stimulate us to acquire such traits as an even temper, cheerful disposition, charity towards our neighbor, and to strive for perfection according to the will of our Creator! We look to Mary for guidance and protection in all our joys and sorrows, accomplishments, and trials. triumphs and defeats. By the guiding light of Mary, our Queen and Mother, we hope that one day our lives will portray her virtue and inspire those around us to attain the love, zeal, generosity, purity, and holiness so prominent in her lifetime. Without her blessed beacon we would in- deed be lost in the darkness of this material- istic world. Yet, for no other reason than love, Mary reaches out her guiding hand and lifts us to new heights. With Mary as our object of faith, hope, love, and truth, we endeavor to be exemplary Catholics, wise citizens, and just leaders, and thus to reach our goal of everlasting life in heaven.
